Introduction
• Continuing nursing education is the process directed towards the
personal and professional growth of nurses and other personnel
while they are employed by a health care agency.
• It is essential for the up-lifttment of professional as well as
administrative field.
• Continuing education helps in updating the knowledge and practice
of professionals.
• It is applicable not only to the nursing field but also to all the
professional fields.

beyond a basic nursing educational program. These are
designed to promote the development of knowledge skills and

improving health care to the public.

Concept of nursing education
• The nursing personnel serve as a key element of health care
delivery system.
• In order to full-fill the challenging role in the delivery of quality care,
acquiring basic theoretical and practical knowledge is not just
enough.
• To keep pace with the rapid changes taking place in the science
and technology, there should be constant efforts to explore new
knowledge, Continuing nursing education is one of the ways to do
so.

earn more KNOWLEDGE.
• It's valuable to attain advanced education when looking for
new nursing job opportunities.
• There's a possibility that future licensing laws may require
bachelor's degrees.

"Distance education is a systematically organized form of self-
study in which student counselling the presentation of learning
material and the seeing and supervising of the student success is
carried out by a team of teachers each of whom has responsibility.
It is made possible at a distance by means of media, which can
cover long distance.”

Introduction • Continuing nursing education is the process directed towards the personal and professional growth of nurses and other personnel while they are employed by a health care agency. • It is essential for the up-lifttment of professional as well as administrative field. • Continuing education helps in updating the knowledge and practice of professionals. • It is applicable not only to the nursing field but also to all the professional fields.

  • 6. Conti.. “Education is the development of all those capabilities in the individual which will enable him to control his environment and full-fill his responsibilities.” -John Dewey
  • 7. Conti.. “Continuing education: Includes all of those educational activities or learning activities that occurs after an individual has completed his basic education.” -Cooper
  • 8. Conti.. Continuing education consists of planned learning experience beyond a basic nursing educational program. These are designed to promote the development of knowledge skills and attitude for the enhancement. of nursing practice, thus improving health care to the public. -American Nurses Association (ANA)
  • 9. Conti.. Continuing education is any extension of opportunities for reading, study and training to any person and adult following their completion of or withdrawal from full time school and/or college programmes. -Dictionary of education

Concept of nursing education • The nursing personnel serve as a key element of health care delivery system. • In order to full-fill the challenging role in the delivery of quality care, acquiring basic theoretical and practical knowledge is not just enough. • To keep pace with the rapid changes taking place in the science and technology, there should be constant efforts to explore new knowledge, Continuing nursing education is one of the ways to do so.

Conti.. • Continuing education for nurses helps them to be professionally competent, develop leadership qualities and to adapt to the changes taking place in their immediate environment. • Continuing nursing education consists of systematic learning experiences designed to improve the knowledge and skills of nurses.

Importance of continuing education • One of the most vital reasons for gaining a higher degree is to earn more KNOWLEDGE. • It's valuable to attain advanced education when looking for new nursing job opportunities. • There's a possibility that future licensing laws may require bachelor's degrees.
  • 13. Conti.. • Transitioning from an RN license to a BSN or MSN degree is becoming easier. • Employers and hospitals are increasingly looking to hire a nurse who has a BSN.

To ensure safe and effective nursing care. To develop the practicing abilities of the nurse. To meet educational requirements.. To meet health needs of the population. Teacher/ nurse educator The role and function of educator includes: • To follow the concept of life long learning and encourage nurses to pursue the same • Being aware of the sources of information • Educator should act as a role model. • Creative teaching is essential. • He/she must show interest and concern every member of the class.

Relation of research and continuing education • There is a strong relationship between the research and continuing education. • As through the continuing education we teach the evidence based practice and scientific principles, which are the basic part of research. • Many of researches are because of the continuing education, which encourages the learner to do research projects or to be a part of them. • Research and continuing education both are to keep up-to-date knowledge with the changing needs.

Aims of research in continuing education • To assess the need for organizing continuing education program. • To objectively assess the needs of the learner. • To identify the areas of learning required. • To evaluate the effectiveness of the program. • To assess the impact of conducting such continuing education nursing program. • To corelate the effectiveness of continuing nursing education program with the output expected.

Distance educations in nursing Definition of Distance Education "Distance education is a systematically organized form of self- study in which student counselling the presentation of learning material and the seeing and supervising of the student success is carried out by a team of teachers each of whom has responsibility. It is made possible at a distance by means of media, which can cover long distance.” -Dohman
  • 31. Conti.. “Distance education is an alternative mode for receiving highest education, professional education and technical education, which distinguishes it from conventional campus, based mode of learning.”
  • 32. Aims and objectives 1.It aims not only in providing certificates and degrees but also helps in personal growth and training for better job prospects, job enhancement and in-service education. 1.Brings changes in attitude and knowledge. 1.Provides flexibility of time to enable students to pace their studies 1.Makes education socially more relevant. 1.Promotes habit of lifelong learning among teachers and thus establish a learning society of teachers. 1.To impart latest information and skills in the field of education. 1.Provides opportunities for self- enrichment and professional upgrading.
  • 33. Characteristics of distance education 1. There is little face to face relationship between the teacher and the learner. 2. There is little oral instruction. 3. There is no fixed classroom or lecture room. 4. Learning is on individual basis. 7. it's now applied for teacher education Programme. i.e., for in-service education of teachers. 6. Learning is on part time basis. 5. It involves use of multi- media approach, postal coaching, and education through radio and television.

Role of distance education in development of nursing 1.Those nurses who are working in remote areas and have no facilities of higher education. 1.Those that is unable to join regular courses due to various reasons. 1.Those that are already working and cannot be relieved from their duties by their institutions because of shortage of nurses and other reasons. 1.Those who feel that they cannot cope up with regular courses within specific time.
