Applied Educational Systems HealthCenter21, The Online Advantage

Notas do Editor

  1. Question… Before we start, I’d like to ask you to think for a moment about the last time that you really connected with students in your classroom… (pause) (click) – Perhaps you asked a difficult question and EVERY hand went up! (click) – Or maybe you watched one of your students perform a difficult skill – flawlessly… (click) – Or maybe you worked really hard with a student who was struggling, and she finally passed the test! (click) – Remember the last time you saw the light-bulbs go on, and they really got it ! Now here’s THE QUESTION: What’s keeping you from having those moments more often in your classroom? What challenges get in the way of you having those moments EVERY DAY ??? We’ve been in the career and technical education business for 25 years… And since we’ve been asking that question, the number one answer we get it… (click to next slide… TIME!)
  2. Not Enough Time When we talk with health science teachers, their number one issue is consistently TIME. There is SO much to cover in such a SHORT amount of time… You cover what you can during class, and assign the rest as “homework” or “outside reading.” But then you spend MORE class time “reviewing” assignments (that is, READING for students!). When do you find time to… - Grade tests and assignments (usually late afternoons and evenings!) - Work 1-on-1 with students, - Practice skills and procedures… (Click to next slide)
  3. Students Not Engaged Students seem to have MUCH shorter attention spans today! - Students have so many MORE DISTRACTIONS – cell phones, texting, iPads and iPods… - “Digital Natives” want to have INTERACTIVE learning, not “passive” - Students are BORED by traditional textbooks and lectures… they want to be ENTERTAINED! (I used to call them the “MTV Generation” but now I say they are the YOUTUBE GENERATION – They still want to be entertained, but they get bored after just 3 to 5 minutes!) (click to next slide)
  4. Many Learning Styles & Abilities How many of you have a perfectly HOMOGENEOUS groups of students in your class? None of you! Students learn differently – Some respond well to reading and lecture, others not so much! - Some WON’T read… Others CAN’T!!! - L.D. (Learning Disabled) Students, Students with I.E.P.’s (Individualized Education Plans), as well as E.S.L. /E.L.L. (English Language Learners), are often MAIN-STREAMED into your classes - And “Teaching to the middle” means you’re often boring the advanced students, and leaving the slower ones in the dust! (click to next slide)
  5. Changing Standards Teachers are ACCOUNTABLE for covering and assessing a long list of knowledge and skills standards, and the list is always growing and changing - It is difficult to… …work both education and industry certification standards into your lesson plans …teach some “soft skills” in a classroom setting… ex. “ethics” …assess actual understanding of knowledge and skills - Differences in teaching styles, preferences and experience can cause lack of continuity from classroom to classroom, and school to school (click to next slide)
  6. Reduced Funding for Education Smaller tax-base = Lower state and local education funding - Lower funding = Smaller school and department budgets - Less money for equipment, supplies and curriculum resources (click to next slide)
  7. Which Challenges Do You Face? … and more importantly, what can you do to OVERCOME these challenges??? (click to next slide)
  8. Today I’d like to introduce you to HealthCenter21… and the Online Advantage! (click to next slide)
  9. HealthCenter21 is… (click) PAPERLESS CONTENT and ASSESSMENT written by Instructional Designers with Health Care Professionals and Health Science Teachers (click) ENGAGING Multimedia Content with Narrated Text, ideal for ELL students, as well as auditory learners (click) INTERACTIVE Student Activities, which are STUDENT-DIRECTED – so students actually PARTICIPATE in their learning (click) TIME-SAVING Teacher Tools and Resources, like lesson plans, skills checklist, PowerPoint presentations, and a classroom management system that automatically grades, tracks, and reports student progress (click) ALL of this delivered from our CLOUD-BASED Web-Server, making it ACCESSIBLE to Students and Teachers in the Classroom or the Family Room… Anytime, Anywhere!!! (click to next slide)
  10. Student-Directed Learning “ When using the HealthCenter21 content as part of an Online or Blended course, students can direct their own learning using the visual or auditory tools that work for them. In addition, students control their own pacing through the content – moving forward when they are ready, and revisiting material when they need more time. Students can review single presentations, or they can reset and review entire lessons until they feel comfortable that they have mastered the material.” Screen Shot – This screen shot from the Safety Precautions module in the Health Care Foundations course template shows a typical “student content page.” Students control their own pacing with the “Previous”, “Next”, and “Return” navigation controls in the upper right part of their screen, and change the audio options with the “Narration Controls” on the bottom of the screen. Video Link – The video link plays a Student Help video explaining how to access modules, units and lessons; how to navigate through lessons; how to answer questions and review content; and how to take a quiz.
  11. Multimedia Content “ Many students don’t like to read – or have difficulty reading – traditional textbooks. Others who have grown up as ‘digital natives’ are easily bored by long reading assignments, or are quickly distracted by other things going on around them. HealthCenter21’s interactive, multimedia content is much more engaging than traditional text-based content. Photos, illustrations, animations and live action videos capture students’ attention, and interactive exercises and questions keep students engaged. Narrated content with key words displayed on screen ease the reading burden for students, while helping them with pronunciation.” Screen Shot – This screen shot from the Bloodborne Pathogens module shows one of the newer “multimedia content” pages, including the “important words or terms” displayed on the screen. The full multimedia content – including animation and narration – is available by clicking on the video link. Video Link – The video link plays the full “multimedia content” from the first page of lesson one of the Bloodborne Pathogens module – including the animation and narration.
  12. Questions and Interactive Exercises “ In addition to making the content more engaging, interactive questions and exercises provide continual assessment of student understanding throughout the learning process – not just at the end of it. Questions include multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and open-ended critical thinking questions. And ‘drag-and-drop’ exercises allow students to review and practice what they learn prior to end-of-unit testing.” Screen Shot – This screen shot from the Anatomy and Physiology module in the Health Care Foundations course template shows an interactive “Drag-and-Drop” activity that allows students to practice identifying parts of the Central Nervous System. Students “click and drag” each label to the associated box on the illustration. If the student correctly matches a label to a box, the label “sticks.” Otherwise, it “snaps back” to the list, and the student must try again. Video Link – The video link demonstrates a sample question being answered, then demonstrates how the Central Nervous System “Drag-and-Drop” exercise looks when a students uses it. (Both correct and incorrect choices are demonstrated in the video.)
  13. Skills and Procedures “ In addition to knowledge-based content, HealthCenter21 also presents skills and procedures using photographed instructions combined with narrated text. The instructions contain ‘replay’ controls (yellow arrow icons) that allow students to repeat individual steps, as well as ‘interactive glossary terms’ (blue hyperlinks) that define the glossary words with a small photo or illustration and narrated pronunciation and definition.” Screen Shot – This screen shot from the CPR Methods module in the Health Care Foundations course template shows a typical “procedure instruction page.” Note the yellow “replay” controls, as well as the blue “interactive glossary terms” hyperlinks. Video Link – The video link plays the first three steps of the Procedure for Adult CPR: One-Person Rescue .
  14. Workplace Scenarios “ Some of the most challenging skills to learn in a classroom setting are the ‘soft skills’ required in health care careers. By presenting live-action Workplace Scenario videos on topics such as communication, empathy and leadership, HealthCenter21 brings the student out of the classroom and into the real world. After watching these video presentations, students are given the opportunity to answer critical thinking questions designed to put them in the scenarios themselves.” Screen Shot – This screen shot from the Communications module in the Health Care Foundations course template shows the first page of a sequence of multimedia content pages that include student instructions, questions, and live-action videos of health care workers interacting in the workplace. Video Link – The video link plays the entire “Communication Exercise,” including the Workplace Scenario videos, and a student answering questions related to the videos.
  15. Rita Griffith teaches a Medical Assisting program at Chesterfield Technical Center in Chesterfield, VA. For several years she has been teaching her MA courses entirely with the HealthCenter21 system – instead of a traditional textbook… And last year she was voted “Health Science Teacher of the Year” at the ACTE Conference in Las Vegas. Here is what she told us last year: (click to play video) (click to next slide)
  16. Ready-to-use Lesson Plans and Teacher Resources (ex. PowerPoint Presentations with Speaker Notes) - Automated student assessments and grading - Grade reports can be printed or exported - Student-directed learning means more 1-on-1 time and time for skill development
  17. Grades and Reports “ Once a course is created and students are enrolled, HealthCenter21 instructors can easily track student activity, progress and performance. From the Grades tab, instructors can view student logons, average quiz and test grades, and even ‘drill-down’ to view individual assessment questions, correct answers, and student responses. This data is automatically stored and backed-up for the Instructor, and may be printed or exported from the Reports tab.” Screen Shot – This screen shot from the Grades tab in the online Learning Management System shows the instructor’s view of a sample class, including Student Name, Last Logon, Average Quiz Grades and Average Module Test Grades. Clicking on the student name allows the instructor to “drill down” to see the individual Unit Quiz Grades, as well as to View the individual Questions (with answers given and correct answers), and to Reset the Unit Quiz. Video Link – The video link plays an Instructor Help video that explains how to view students’ individual and average quiz and test grades, how to view individual questions with correct answers and student responses, how to reset a quiz, and how to print or export the grades from the Reports tab.
  18. Resources for Blended Instruction “ When working in a Blended or Hybrid learning environment, HealthCenter21 instructors have access to ready-made Lesson Plans, Student Forms and Unit Presentations. The Lesson Plans guide instructors in integrating the Online content with optional classroom and laboratory activities. Printable Student Forms include data and activity sheets as well as procedure “check lists” to record the optional hands-on activities. And the ready-to-use Unit Presentations in PowerPoint format contain lesson overview content, demonstrations, and speaker notes with sample discussion questions.” Documents and Screen Shot – This page shows sample documents and a screen shot from the “Lesson Plans and Resources” library that is included with the student content. The “Lesson Plan” and “Student Form” are printable files, and the screen shot is from a “Unit Presentation” in PowerPoint format. Video Link – The video link plays an overview video describing how instructors can access and use: Lesson Plans, Classroom Projects and Checklist “forms,” as well as Unit Presentations in PowerPoint.
  19. HealthCenter21 Online content available “anytime, anywhere” - True “Blended Learning” with included teacher presentations and demonstrations, classroom projects and skill development, and online learning activities and assessments - Students can work from home on multiple platforms and operating systems - No complicated Web-tools to learn - Simple user interface and learning management tools - Online “training” and “help” tools - Experienced support team available
  20. - Content developed around National education & industry standards … NCHSE … OBRA … ABHES … CAAHEP … NREMT - Learning activities and assessments support certification preparation - Content frequently updated and immediately available
