During his lifetime, Shakespeare
was very successful as a writer. This
was mainly because of his genius. He
knew how to write about life, and he
had a wonderful way with words. But
Shakespeare’s success was also due to
the special time in which he lived. In
those days, the English were very
interested in new ideas. They loved
music, art, plays and poetry.

Shakespeare wrote plays, but
they were not all alike. One kind
was the history play. One example
of this is his play called Henry V,
about a king of England.

Henry V performed in London in June 2012.
Another kind was the tragedy, such as
Macbeth.
