SELECTED PROJECTS
European Commission (EC)
Co-leading the production of the European Report on Development 2013 on the Post-2015
Agenda. This involves planning and coordinating the work of a large team of researchers drawn
from the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), the European Centre for Development Policy
Management (ECDPM), and the German Development Institute (DIE-GDI).
World Bank
Prepared a background paper for the World Development Report 2013 on Jobs. The paper
investigated the growth-employment-poverty nexus in four fast-growing African countries:
2. Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, and Tanzania. The paper highlighted some factors and policies that
may explain the different trends observed in employment and poverty outcomes.
Department for International Development (DFID)
Produced a paper that indentifies key international policy reforms – in the context of a Post-2015
development framework – with a view to promote inclusive growth patterns in developing
countries. The paper focuses on three key policy areas: macroeconomic coordination,
development finance, and international trade.
Asian Development Bank (ADB)
Produced an overview paper on the social inclusiveness of economic growth in Asian middleincome countries. The paper investigated trends in economic growth, employment, poverty and
inequality in a sample of Asian MICs. The policy focus was on labour market policies, social
protection, and social and municipal services.
European Commission (EC)
Conducted research on the macroeconomic impact of demographic change and international
migration in developed and developing countries. Evaluated the challenges of modelling
employment in the context of the CAM model of the world economy.
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
Investigated the prospects of non-traditional sources of development finance in Ethiopia.
Assessed the feasibility and resource generating potential of Diaspora bonds, South-South
cooperation, public-private partnerships, carbon finance, and tourism taxes. Examined recent
country experiences and provided concrete policy recommendations.
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
Evaluated the macroeconomic management of foreign resource inflows in low-income countries
and its implications for the achievement of the MDGs. Provided a number of key policy
recommendations to improve the ‘absorption’ and ‘spending’ of these inflows.
UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
Outlined the broad conceptual and analytical basis for MDG-based national development
strategies beyond 2015. Proposed an alternative strategy of economic development for the least
developed countries in order to support their human development ambitions.
UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA)
Produced a background study for the Economic Report on Africa (ERA 2010). The report assessed
the implications of the global economic crisis, and explored a range of fiscal and macroeconomic
policy options to steer African countries towards faster economic growth.
World Bank
Reviewed recent empirical evidence on the predictability and volatility of foreign aid inflows for a
World Bank-ODI project. The report provided guidance on the methodologies and research
questions to be used in the case studies.
