3. Department Overview
The Department of Engineering Design was established in IIT Madras as
its 16th Department, with a focus on interdisciplinary teaching and
research. The Department launched the novel Dual Degree programme
in Engineering Design with a view of providing the much needed
leadership in this area. The first of its kind in the country, the
programme constitutes a B.Tech specialization in Engineering Design
and an M.Tech specialization in either Automotive Engineering or in
Biomedical Design with a strong thrust on the modern practices of
design.
Engineering design involves the development of a concept and a form to
meet a function. It comprises an essential understanding of what it
takes to start with an idea, and manifest it into a working system or
product. A designer must understand the aspects of their target market,
concept iterations, prototyping and manufacturability, the expenditure
involved at each stage, how design compromises can affect the system,
etc. The courses are designed to expose the students to these ideas,
molding them into more wholesome engineers, and enabling them to
have an essential perspective of the bigger picture in design of a system.
The main objective of the department is to develop design professionals
with a strong multidisciplinary background and a deep sense of
aesthetics with a focus on automotive engineering, design for life, and
robotics. This broad-based programme is aimed to impart important
class-room and practical learning aspects in development of a concept
and a form to meet functional, aesthetic, environmental need in
designing a product or a system. To prepare students and research
scholars to provide much needed leadership to the Indian industry in
the area of design and manufacture of new products.
The mission of the department is to make IIT Madras a Global Centre of
Excellence in Engineering Design.

6. Academics
Dual Degree Program
Two dual degree programs with a specialization in Automotive
Engineering (2005 onwards) and Biomedical Design (2008 onwards)
were initiated.
The curriculum was designed such that a combination of arts, science,
engineering and practice was obtained. The first batch of dual-degree
students with a specialization in Automotive Engineering was graduated
in 2010 and that of with a specialization in Biomedical Design was
graduated in 2013.
What’s unique?
Different teaching laboratories have been setup and importance is
also given to laboratories connected with theory subjects.
Industry-defined problem statements as coursework (Product
Design Lab).
One semester long industrial project training.
