Andrii Sofiienko
Dear Selection Committee,
I am writing to you in support of Dr. Andrii Sofiienko and his desire to attend for your
project. Though many students and young scientists ask me to make this request on their
behalf, but I recommend only those who have good experience of independent research and
who have significant results in their work. Dr. Sofiienko is one of those young scientist.
As Head of Department of Optics and Spectroscopy of Crystals at Institute of Physics of
National Academy of Science of Ukraine, I work with many post-graduate students who have
substantial knowledge in solid-state physics. Each year I notice that only a few outstanding
post-graduate students have the good motivation and great abilities for scientific work.
Dr. Sofiienko has shown such strong motivation and very good results of his researches that I
simply could not turn down his request for recommendation.
Though Dr. Sofiienko has consistently exceeded in all areas of his work, the best
example of his intelligence shone through a thesis on kinetics of X-ray induced conductivity of
ZnSe. His dissertation is devoted to theoretical and experimental studies of photo- and X-ray
induced conductivity and luminescence of wide-gap semiconductor ZnSe. Work was carried
out at a high level and is of great practical importance for semiconductor physics.
Dr. Sofiienko continues to impress me with his knowledge, skill and dedication to his
