Relevance of Othello in Contemporary Society
Contacts for help:dorineadalyn@gmail.com
The onset of the play reveals that the play is coupled with love and jealousy. However,
there is more in the play, especially on racism, pride, and deception. These are contemporary
issues that the world is dealing with, and it proves that the play is a transcendent play that will
survive the peril of time due to its relevance in contemporary society. Therefore essay aims at
exploring how the play “Othello” is still relevant in contemporary society.
During Shakespearian times, black people were suffering from racial prejudice, and the
larger societal contexts influenced the play's plot. For instance, Desdemona’s father looks at the
marriage between his daughter to Othello as so unethical and with the suspicion that he thinks
that Desdemona “feared to look at Othello’s dark face. Moreover, there is a pre-informed mind
that her daughter was kidnaped, and he needs reassurance that Othello did not kidnap her
daughter and there was a benevolent love between them. This makes Othello insecure about his
race. However, he maintains a rational approach to the issue he faces. According to Othello,
Desdemona had the eyes and chose him; therefore, his race did not matter to him. However, the
tricks of the Logo convey to him that Desdemona was playing him, thus igniting his irrational

loathing. Logo manages to convince Othello that Desdemona has found him unworthy (Dugger
7). The issue of race has been one of the challenges of the contemporary world. Society is
struggling with the question of how far the various racial groups, which are chiefly marked by
the color of the skin, will hereafter be denying the right to share the opportunities and privileges
of modern civilization.
Calls to get beyond racial differences in modern societies are expressed, and any hint on
the issues of race consciousness is seen s racism. As the world is struggling with race, traditional
civil rights movements and organizations have seen crisis objectives that they have stood firm to
fight through political spaces and strategic orientation. As a result, persistent racial disparities
have been revised in the light of changing the norms. The oppressed race has been subjected to
unemployment, drug abuse due to psychological torture, and crime; despite puzzling dilemma
being achieved through a legal presentation, a substantive racial inequality on housing,
healthcare employment, and other basics remains the same. Therefore, the play Othello is
relevant to the contemporary world as it explores race, which has been persistent in the world.
Same as the contemporary racially depressed communities, Othello is insecure about his race.
However, he maintains a rational approach. Issue of racism as presented in the play still
pervading contemporary societies. Issue of race is conspicuous atrocity relevant in contemporary
society. Since the beginning of the world’s civilization, the issue of racism has plagued many
people. As shown in the play, the unjust treatment against the blacks has shown how they are
seen as the “other” and inferior during the Elizabethan time and is still relevant in the modern
time. Despite achieving great thing, some of which had not been achieved by most characters in
the play, he is still viewed as inferior and unworthy of certain status. ‘Even now, now, very now,
an old black ram is topping your white ewe” this is Logo’s description of Othello using a slag

that is seen as a racist hatred. Surprisingly, the slag is accepted by Brabantio. The pervasive
racial slag still is present in the council in regard to how they address Othello. “Whether a maid
so tender, fair and happy, so opposite to marriage that she shunned." This statement illustrates
Brabantio's disenchantment in Othello’s inability to marry his daughter because Othello is Black.
He also alludes that being that Othello is Black, he must have used “chains of magic." Racism and
prejudice against Africans in the issue of marriage and presentation is an unceasing occurrence.
Despite some people still allowing marriage between blacks, there are still some people or
communities who still disagree or do not accept the interracial marriage. Some nations like China,
Japan, Korea can only approve of their race marriage, and anything less than that will lead to
expulsion or unwanted by the family.
Gender relationships, especially on equality issues between men and women, are still
persistent in societies today. The dogma of gender relationship is equaled virtually in every sphere
of work public affairs. The role of men and women, however, cold facts still indicated that gender
representation between men and women is still biased. There have been startling and concerted
movements charged for changing the narrative of representation between men and women.
Despite their efforts to combat gender inequality between men and women, their efforts have not
achieved a total conversion. In the play Othello, there is an exhibition of how men and women are
treated during the Elizabethan time, practically between the relationship between Othello and his
wife. Sometimes Othello treats his wife with lots of decent, but sometimes, and he treats her as
less belonging (Su 1). Sometimes, Othello does not trust his wife the same way Desdemona trusts
him. Othello’s alleged arrogance and lies pervade their love, and lack of trust in his wife would
definitely lead to the truth, but because he trusts his officers, he would still be subject to rebuke
due to his color.

Lagos is ready to take revenge on anyone, Rodrigo, Desdemona, Cassio, Othello, and
even Emilia, at the slightest provocation and marvel at the pain and the damage he is causing
them. His interaction with Roderigo reveals his cowardice, which is manifested when he killed
his wife. By killing Emilia, Lagos demonstrates his hatred of women. His persecution of Othello
reveals his homosexual love because he takes pleasure in guarding Othello against having
pleasure in marital satisfaction. This is shown by his frequent expression of his love for Othello
outwardly. There is a romantic shadow over males’ relationships in the play. The homosexual
male relationship in contemporary societies has found its way into the male homo-social desires
construct. Lagos reaction could be interpreted as the homosexual desire-a continued set of
emotions. As presented by Shakespeare's play, the world that Othello creates is a portrayal of the
contemporary view of homosexual desires. The infiltration by women as created by Lago could
be seen as a call toward homosexism because, in Lagos world, men and women should be
separate. Othello and Lago could rape the two women, and the young men watch as they rape the
women appeals to the homosexual desire. This could allude to the fact that the military
characters of males shape logo's world. The promotion of Cassio and his hatred of Desdemona
can seemingly be seen as he is one who is being treated as a second lover, a desire turned into
love, coupled with his military lifestyle, he adheres to the forces of conversion. In contemporary
society issue of homosexuality has been treated with contempt and sometimes punished because
it is unwanted. The fact that Shakespeare, during the Elizabethan time, explores the issues of
homosexuality is manifest that the play Othello is still relevant regarding the issue of
homosexuality in contemporary societies.
5. Surname 5
Othello in the play is presented as a black person; however, his identity is used as a black
person to revels the societal issue that was happening during the Elizabethan times. This is a
reminiscence of racism, gender inequality, and sexism, still relevant in contemporary society.
