Printed Batteries / Battery Legislation
PRINTED BATTERIES empowering GREEN ELECTRONICS7
‘battery’ or ‘accumulator’ means any source of electrical energy generated by direct
conversion of chemical energy and consisting of one or more primary battery cells
(nonrechargeable) or consisting of one or more secondary battery cells (rechargeable);
Appliances into which batteries and accumulators are incorporated shall be accompanied
by instructions showing how they can be removed safely and, where appropriate, informing
the end-user of the type of the incorporated batteries and accumulators.
These provisions shall not apply where, for safety, performance, medical or data integrity
reasons, continuity of power supply is necessary and requires a permanent connection
between the appliance and the battery or accumulator.
Member States shall, having regard to the environmental impact of transport, take
necessary measures to maximize the separate collection of waste batteries and
accumulators and to minimize the disposal of batteries and accumulators as mixed
municipal waste in order to achieve a high level of recycling for all waste batteries and
accumulators.

Member States which have manufacturers established on their territory shall promote
research and encourage improvements in the overall environmental performance of
batteries and accumulators throughout their entire life cycle as well as the
development and marketing of batteries and accumulators which contain smaller
quantities of dangerous substances or which contain less polluting substances, in
particular as substitutes for mercury, cadmium and lead.

All of these Statements are open for discussion :
Printed battery
• is based on the “same” kind of main materials as traditional batteries
• materials provide at least the same amount of energy as a traditional processed
• can be easier integrated into intelligent objects for the Internet of Things
• can be produced with less than 50% CO2 impact
• is leading in Material Safety , Material Efficiency and no scarce Materials Usage
• has to be compliant with the current battery legislation
In printed flexible, autonomous systems the CO2% battery impact(10%) is similar to the %
of systems with traditional batteries .
As traditional batteries could not enable these types of new systems :

Printed Batteries / Battery Legislation PRINTED BATTERIES empowering GREEN ELECTRONICS7 ‘battery’ or ‘accumulator’ means any source of electrical energy generated by direct conversion of chemical energy and consisting of one or more primary battery cells (nonrechargeable) or consisting of one or more secondary battery cells (rechargeable); Appliances into which batteries and accumulators are incorporated shall be accompanied by instructions showing how they can be removed safely and, where appropriate, informing the end-user of the type of the incorporated batteries and accumulators. These provisions shall not apply where, for safety, performance, medical or data integrity reasons, continuity of power supply is necessary and requires a permanent connection between the appliance and the battery or accumulator. Member States shall, having regard to the environmental impact of transport, take necessary measures to maximize the separate collection of waste batteries and accumulators and to minimize the disposal of batteries and accumulators as mixed municipal waste in order to achieve a high level of recycling for all waste batteries and accumulators.

Printed Batteries Increased environmental performance PRINTED BATTERIES empowering GREEN ELECTRONICS8 Member States which have manufacturers established on their territory shall promote research and encourage improvements in the overall environmental performance of batteries and accumulators throughout their entire life cycle as well as the development and marketing of batteries and accumulators which contain smaller quantities of dangerous substances or which contain less polluting substances, in particular as substitutes for mercury, cadmium and lead.

PRINTED BATTERIES empowering GREEN ELECTRONICS15 All of these Statements are open for discussion : Printed battery • is based on the “same” kind of main materials as traditional batteries • materials provide at least the same amount of energy as a traditional processed • can be easier integrated into intelligent objects for the Internet of Things • can be produced with less than 50% CO2 impact • is leading in Material Safety , Material Efficiency and no scarce Materials Usage • has to be compliant with the current battery legislation In printed flexible, autonomous systems the CO2% battery impact(10%) is similar to the % of systems with traditional batteries .
