Introduction
• Almost all modern car crushers use a hydraulic press to crush the
cars.
• A large motor powers a pump that pushes hydraulic fluid to drive
large cylinders.
• Using principles of force-multiplication, a hydraulic system can
generate over 2,000 psi and impart more than 150 tons of crushing
force onto a pile of scrap cars.
• Power section; this is the main source
of hydraulic system.
• Control section; it controls both the
ratio and direction of the oil.
• Reservoir; stores hydraulic oil
• Actuator; coverts hydraulic power into
useful mechanical work
Components of a Hydraulic Control Section
• Throttle valve.
• Filter.
• Releif valve.
• Pump (fixed displacement).
• Double acting cylinder.
• Tank.
• Motor.
• Directional control valve(2position/4way).
Operation principle
• First, the process begins from the power section. Here, the pump driven by a prime mover.
• the prime mover will help to convert mechanical energy into fluid energy.it and the hydraulic pump are
coupled together via a shaft.
• The main relief valve protects the hydraulic pump in case of any back pressure. In case of a back pressure, the
hydraulic fluid will flow back to the reservoir (tank).When the system is activated (from the hand operated
valve), the hydraulic fluid will flow through the pipes to the cylinder. This will create a pressure that will force
the piston to move in the opposite direction.
• That is, it will move the piston downwards. Assuming the hydraulic fluid enters the cylinder through the upper
section.
• As a result, hydraulic fluid in the lower part of the piston will be forced out of the hydraulic cylinder. It will
flow through the pipes back to the reservoir.
• This is due to the pressure build up.
• In the next cycle, the hydraulic fluid from the pump will flow to the opposite side of the cylinder (where the
piston had moved in the first cycle). This pushes the piston up, and the fluid in the other portion of the
cylinder will be pushed out of the cylinder back to the tank.
• This will result in an up and down movement of the piston, creating a hydraulic power based on the Pascal’s
laws.
• In the cylinder, hydraulic actuators convert the hydraulic energy into mechanical energy, i.e. a linear motion.
EXAMPLE:
• How much pressure does a car crusher use? with F =20000lb and
10in^2.
• P=F/A=20000lb/10in2= 2000psi
• Pressure of releif valve ?
• 2000psi+10%=22000psi
Discussion
• What is the purpose of crushing cars?
• The reason that cars are crushed is simple; they take up less space
and are easier to transport to a recycling facility.
