In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
How my opening incorporates generic
conventions
There are a few generic conventions in my media product, for example
my video has all the conventions of a ‘Thriller’ film. I used music for
tension and suspense throughout my sequence. Also it has the generic
iconography of a thriller, e.g. Shadows, Dark figures, Rooms, Hidden
messages (Being the leather gloves in bedroom).
In my film I have used classic quick cuts to create suspense in the
characters and make the audience keep watching, I have used a
bedroom to show where Lucy should be safest most, but this is her main
area where she gets nightmares. I have made the kidnapper wear dark
clothing which is a convention of a thriller. Because my thriller has
scenes of things happening in my protagonist’s head, it is a psychological
thriller, but it also shows danger within the protagonist which indicates it
is a crime-thriller too.
9 Key Frames
Frame 1
This is the first shot you see, it sums up the whole thriller why
Lucy is going outside to the woods. She is going to find her
dogs, This shows the class of the girl, she can afford an
expensive phone. This is also a extreme close up.
Frame 2
This is the first scene is which you can see the girls bedroom, it
is a typical girl room with pink walls, huge cuddly bear. I also
added the Antagonist into the picture to introduce what his
main feature is, the leather gloves, this is also something the
audience should see a lot. Especially the shot of the bedroom,
when the gloves appear and disappear every so often.
Frame 3
This is wear you see the antagonist, the way the antagonist is behind
the protagonist indicates that something may happen between the two
of them or something has happened. The antagonist is covered up so
you don’t see who it is, which gives the audience questions an
suspense. The color of the scene is in ‘Memory’ tone, to show the
difference between the the ‘Real life action’ and ‘The memory action’
Frame 4
This is a shot of the protagonist leaving her house, In this shot you see
the full clothing style of Lucy, you see that the clothing she is wearing
isn't cheap. Nike and Puma brands. This is a wide shot to show her
walking down the street and seeing how she walks very shyly.
Frame 5
This is just when the protagonist has just walked round the corner, the
antagonist clearly knows where and when she is going to walk, so he
has made himself very hidden and away from public, also you see his
full outfit, Dark upper clothing and quite bright jeans. Which may catch
the audience’s eye, and question who is this character.
Frame 6
This scene keeps the audience on edge, it almost shows who the
protagonist is, this is an ant view shot. This is also shows that it is in
the day time, which usually isn't a thriller convention but its when
something is least expected to happen.
Frame 7
This is the last time you see the protagonist ‘Safe’ After this she is
kidnapped and hears something. This is also shot in a medium angle so
you can see Lucy turning around to find her dogs, but you can see the
expression on her face.
Frame 8
This is the scene that the whole thriller was leading up to, the moment
the antagonist kidnaps the protagonist, where the villain wins. This is a
wide shot angle but it also happens in a quick shot, which is a
convention of a thriller. You can also see the leather gloves, that you
saw throughout. This is a anti climax moment, where you don’t see
what happens after the scene, but it makes the audience want to see
what happens next.
Frame 9
This is the final shot of the film, its where the music dulls down a bit,
yet it’s a simple but effect text. This is where the movie will start, then
it will go onto the protagonist’s life.
