The document discusses the author's search for film and media career opportunities in Durham and surrounding areas using Google Maps and job search websites. They found limited local options, with most roles located in London. One potential opportunity found on Indeed was for a content creator at SuperReach LTD, paying £20,000-30,000 to work on video projects. Another site, My First Job in Film, listed unpaid work experience opportunities across the UK, including working from home. Upwork was also mentioned as a site to find freelance writing and editing jobs in the film industry.

1. Jobs
Finding that my interests lie mostly with the role of a screenwriter and director, living in Durham I
am having to look into what potential career options are currently available around me.
Having multiple options for where I could look for a media and/or film related career, the first
platform I will be using is Google Maps as that will show me all of the known vacancies around my
area.
Google Maps
Starting off closer to home, only one vacancy had appeared available after searching ‘film’ as the
keyword.
‘Unveil Films’, located in Hetton, unfortunately this one comes of no relevance to me as it is a studio
for wedding photography.
Trying another keyword, this time using ‘filmmaker’, this time nothing had popped up.
Before moving on, ‘Video Production’ was another one I had used to find a nearby studio, but again
nothing had appeared.
Trying in and around Durham itself now, the same keywords have been reused.
2. In Durham, the only options that had showed up are existing cinemas in the area. As for the other
three, ‘Durham Window Films’, and ‘JWR Films’ are left irrelevant being a window tinting service and
a local wedding service.
‘Carl Joyce – Films & Photography’ works though. A film production service located near Ushaw
Moor. Looking at his website, he is a freelance worker who does both commercial and personal work
focusing on local history and intangible heritage and culture.
Trying ‘filmmaker’ as the keyword again, nothing new had popped up leaving me with one last word
to reuse. And once I did, ‘Absolute Media Northeast’ was the only option.
Finding their website, it turns out the company again is for wedding related projects.
With nothing much around Durham, Sunderland is the next location of interest.
After researching ‘Film’, only two of the three pop ups have caught my attention as the ‘Distribution
Database’ is a database management company.
Based in the city centre, ‘RGR Film Productions’ claims to have been around for the past ten years
creating media content for global, national and local businesses. Reading their webpage, as it says
3. with the media content, if I am correct, I believe that is the company’s focus. Creating media
products rather than film related projects.
Now with ‘New Enterprise Studios’ across the water, their page offering a studio hire, videography
and photography options as well as help with audio production, filmmaking and creative design.
Changing the keyword back to ‘Video Production’, a few more options had shown up.
Looking at ‘Second Draft Ltd – Video Production’, ‘RAWR Productions’ and ‘Roar Motion Ltd’, they
are all video production services with the first one aiming to create products that are memorable
and make an impact with their commercial pieces and promotional campaigns as such.
As for ‘RAWR Productions’, they help in promoting their clients’ brands and events with both
videography and photography.
Finally with the last company mentioned, ‘Roar Motion Ltd’ offers a range of services including video
production, animation video, commercial photography and aerial drone photography.
Done looking at Google now, existing career sites will be used now.
Indeed
Being the number one job search engine, ‘Indeed’ has over three hundred million individual visitors
monthly. All people actively job hunting, the site itself offers for you to upload your own CV whilst
also allowing you to create a second CV with a layout so you know what employers are looking for.
And the more you use the website, the more the algorithm fits finding roles most suitable for each
jobseeker.
4. Seeing what Screenwriter jobs would show up as available, unfortunately there was none. Trying
‘Film Director’ now, a number of 65 results had been gathered. Not all relevant to what I am looking
for, but some interesting opportunities have been found.
Adding in my location to limit the search results, it turns out unfortunately there aren’t any
opportunities surrounding me. Trying the cities Durham, Sunderland and Newcastle, the results had
dropped to zero. Although before giving up, I did try Leeds out of curiosity due to that being where I
hope to go for university, and a few job roles came to a match. None being a film director exactly but
better than the previous answers.
Going back to the previous 65 results, browsing through most of them do seem to be centred in
London. And although I am looking more for an actual filmmaker type role, the results seem to be
circling around creative directors as such. Reading a few of the applications to help me get a better
idea of what the employees are after, I have found one looking for a ‘videographer, editor, director,
content creator’.
For this one, ‘SuperReach LTD’ are on the hunt for content creator to help work on projects including
podcast content, “explainer videos” and influencer interviews.
The responsibilities of this role include:
Working with the team to lead on Video Content Creation.
Good Project Manager - owning ideation to execution, managing all stakeholders along the
way.
Film and edit high quality video content to meet the clients' requirements and their brief.
Manage and direct shoots.
Ensure all projects are delivered against the brand values whilst also pushing creativity.
With a salary of £20,000 to £30,000 per year, the qualifications and experience this role is looking for
involve at least two years of video editing experience, colour correction and grading skills, camera
skills, knowledge with the adobe editing suite, flexibility, motion graphics and after effect skills.
Trying to find another similar role on indeed that didn’t really work out.
Searching ‘Filmmaker’ this time round, 127 results had showed up being more relevant with what I
am looking for. Before looking through, again I tried to see if there were any job listings close to be.
Like the director hunt though, no achievement had been made with the attempt.
With most of the vacancies coming from London once again, the applications do seem to be more of
a freelance job as most of them have ‘freelance filmmaker’ in the title.
Reading one that was published by ‘Social Awaken’, the pay is as high as £200 a day but the
requirements are looking for someone who as an A-Level or equivalent degree, three years of video
editing experience and three years of videography experience.
Listing the responsibilities, they are after from their employee, it is made clear that the company are
after someone to take up the role as the film director. Adding onto that, these are the additional
skills and requirements the application is looking for someone with:
Experience directing short films, industry knowledge and technical expertise.
Experience managing budgets.
Creative mindset.
Confidence and motivational skill.
5. Exceptional interpersonal skills.
Attention to detail.
Excellent verbal communication.
Good organizational skills.
Trying to find a second application to compare the two, the only other application that appears to
offer the same is one from Shipley published by ‘Surface Clinic’. Annoyingly with this one though,
there is barely any intel into what the application is for and what they are looking for.
Moving on
With not many opportunities on indeed, and me not knowing where else to look I am just going to
search for nearby filmmaker job as see what the web informs me of.
Well, that’s handy.
Switching the search engine to Google, this time I have been given what I was looking for. With
numbers of results, all being ads for job sites, one in particular had caught my eye.
“The UK’s Largest Job Site”. Let us see if it has what I am looking for.
CV-Library
Not working, the closest to a film related career on that site is a film studies teacher. Even after
trying a range of different key words, there was no winning.
My First Job In Film
Sounding more promising, never hearing of this one before where is the harm in having a look.
With a listed 63 opportunities, again with the location there isn’t anything close to home. But there
are plenty of interesting roles-based in areas such as London, Wales and Manchester. Rather than an
actual job though I believe everything listed is just work experience, still a perfect opportunity
though.
6. There are even opportunities to work from home and to freelance.
Clicking on one to see what they are after, turns out they aren’t looking for much. Only people who
have the interest to participate.
Reading the ‘Writers Room Work Experience’, they explain that the role is a part-time placement to
help provide a learning opportunity for anyone who wants to be a part of it. Running for a total of
twelve weeks this one, those who join would meet up every Sunday going through different
exercises that can then be applied to their future projects. And no experience is necessary to apply.
Quite a nice site to be fair, and not just that but they also provide careers guides and CV tips for
those looking to be a part of the industry.
Upwork
With loads of mention of freelancing for the industry, one I have been using myself is a site that
comes to mind to mention.
Providing a whole library of work experience opportunities, the site works the same as if you were
applying for a full-time job. In a way I mean.
As there are two versions of the site, one for clients and one for the freelancers, everyone is given a
fair opportunity to apply sending off personal statements of their own with information on relevant
experience as such, the client is then set with the decision of who to hire.
7. As for when you do apply to the one that interests you, depending on the client and how they have
put the descriptions together, information on the project and what they are looking for should be
provided.
Looking at the ‘Script writers and video editors’ for example, they are offering a payment of $50 to
those willing to help create video product focusing on either “a digital story or history growth.”
Not the clearest with what they are after, the only skills and expertise they state they are looking for
are:
Scriptwriting
Script Writers and Video Editors
Documentary
Journalism writing
A better example of a job posting on there is one for a YouTube channel who are after scriptwriters
focussing on and around the topic of golf.
8. With evidence as to the client being trustworthy, they are also a lot more informative with what
they want from their employer and even providing questions to help them find the right writer to
hire.
Being a great way to earn work experience, the website is also great for those interested in the film
industry. Although the two examples I did talk about were about writing, the job postings do update
nearly every hour giving so many options to choose from.
