3. M Y I D E A
A docu-drama, sharing the story of Britain's very first female
serial killer.
Genre: Biography, drama, thriller, crime, educational.
Characters: Mary Ann Cotton, portrayals of people who had
attended the trial, others depend on the events shared within
the film. (husbands, children, parents, lovers etc.)
Opening sequence: Mary Ann Cotton walking into court as the
judges prepare the first day of trial.
Middle: The film then rewinds back to reveal her story showing
the audience how she has gotten where she is.
End sequence: The murderer being announced guilty, being led
out of court, the morning of her death sentence and ending at
the events of her hanging.
Duration: 40-50 minutes long.
4. I believe, the story of Mary Ann Cotton is a one
that everybody should hear about. We all know
of Ed Gein, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy and
Jeffery Dahmer as such who all have their
unique backstories. So why isn't there more talk
about our countries very first female serial
killer? And that is where my short film comes in,
entertaining viewers whilst also educating them
on our cultures history.

For the channel I believe this would be best, Channel 3.
With their focus on taking risks with their entertainment and
documentary content, a docu-drama of a not-so-heard-of serial
killer would fit perfectly.
As for the time slot I think my docu-drama should air, having from
seven pm to four am daily, between seven and ten would work best
with the production going to be aimed towards younger audiences
as well as older. And with that, around eleven-twelve is where
program's with the age rating of eighteen plus tend to play with
those younger supposedly being in bed, leaving seven to ten to be
the ideal time.
Trying to think of a preferred day, I couldn't find whether or not the
BBC have a selected day for particular genres as such. But if it were
to air late, I'd say a Friday or Saturday would work best preventing
from keeping students up too late on a weedkday.

A U D I E N C E With the BBC Three targeting 16-34 year old's, that will make
them my target audience also with this project. Leading to the
highest possible age rating to be an R if it were to come to
that, no higher.
With research completed on this audience, I have found that
serial killer related media has become a big trend in the
industry making it a great selling point for the BBC. And what
better for a British TV organization than to share the story of
our nations very first female serial killer.

Another point, feminism. That has
become huge in the recent years, and
thanks to Mary Ann Cotton in a way,
as messed up as it is what she did,
she did help make a statement in
woman empowerment. Even being in
the 1800's.
Because of this woman, men now
knew not to underestimate what were
once seen as weak, innocent and
pure.
Feminism
Market
Although there has already been a
two-episodic series on the story of
Mary Ann Cotton, but still her name
remains somewhat unheard of. As
you know obviously with the series
being a BBC original.
But people like adaptions and to
compare the differences whether
good or bad. So why not give them,
an updated version of the story but
tell it in a new way.
