Optoelectronic Devices
What are Optoelectronic devices?
Opto-electronics is the study and application of electronic
devices and systems that source, detect and control light,
usually considered a sub-field of photonics. In this
context, light often includes invisible forms of radiation
such as gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet and infrared, in
addition to visible light.

A Light Emitting Diode is a two-lead semiconductor
light source. It is a p-n junction diode that emits light
when activated. When a suitable voltage is applied to
the leads, electrons are able to recombine with
electrons holes within the device, releasing energy in
the form of photons.

The basic Principle is identical. OLED emits light by
conducting electricity to the organic materials that
are sandwiched between the electrodes. On the
other hand, LED emits light by conducting electricity
to inorganic materials that are sandwiched between
electrodes.
When sunlight strikes a solar cell, electrons in the
silicone are ejected, which results in the formation of
“holes”-the vacancies left behind the escaping
electrons. If this happens in the electric field, the
field will move electrons to the n-type layer and
holes to the p-type layer.
A photodiode is a semiconductor p-n junction device
that converts light into an electrical current. The
current is generated when photons are absorbed in
the photodiode. Photodiodes may contain optical
filters, built-in lenses, and may have large or small
surface areas.
A PIN Diode operated under what is known as high
level injection. In other words, the intrinsic “I” region
is flooded with charge carriers from the “p” and “n”
regions.
Its function can be likened to filling up a water
bucket with a hole on the side. Once the water
reaches the hole’s level it will begin to pour out.
