5. CONTD.
The subproject road section (SH-78) is located in the state of Bihar.
It has been distinctively divided into 2 segments separated by NH 30A.
The first segment, Bihta- Daniyawan is in Patna District
other section, Chandi- Sarmera is in Nalanda District.
The first segment starts at Junction of NH-30 near Bihta and ends at junction
of NH-30A near Daniyawan totalling 52.3 km
The other section starts at Junction of NH-30A near Chandi and ends at
Junction of NH-82 near Sarmera totalling 48.014 Km.
There is a gap of 20km between end point of first segment and start point of
second segment.
This 20 km section is part of National Highway 30A.
The total length of this subproject is 100.314 km.
7. TASK PERFORMED
I. Supervising the flexible pavement construction
II. Supervising the ROB construction
III. Tests performed
• Field density test by sand replacement method at different
chainages.
• Gradation check of subgrade, G.S.B. and W.M.M. at different
chainages.
• CBR test of different subgrades and base courses.
9. FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT LAYERS
1. Subgrade
Subgrade is the native material underneath a construction road, pavement, or railway
track, it is also called formation level, the subgrade may also refer to imported material
that has been used to build an embankment.

10. CONTD.

Fig: Bed of G.S.B
2. Granular Sub base (G.S.B.)
The granular base course is considered as the
most imp component of flexible pavement layer
which sustain the wheel load stress and disperse
through larger area on the GSB layer below
good quality coarse aggregates are used in the
GSB layer of flexible pavement
3. Wet Mix Macadam (W.M.M.)
Wet Mix Macadam laying method contains of
laying spreading and compacting of clean,
crushed, well-graded granular materials on a
prepared and Granular sub-Base.
11. 4. Prime coat (P.C.) and Tack coat (T.C.)
Prime coat- A prime coat is mainly responsible
for protecting the substrate of a construction
project before adding additional layers.
Tack coat- A tack coat is applied after the
prime coat, to form an adhesive bond between
the tack coat and the next layer of coating
Fig: Layers of Prime coat and Tack coat
5. Densified Bituminous Macadam (D.B.M.)
Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) is a binder
course used for roads with a greater number of
heavy commercial vehicles and a close-graded
premix material having a voids content of 5-10
per cent

12. CONTD.
6. Bituminous Surface Treatment (B.S.T.)
A bituminous surface treatment (BST), also known as a seal coat or chip
seal, is a thin protective wearing surface that is applied to a pavement or
base course.

13. ROAD OVER BRIDGE (R.O.B.)
Fig: Plan, Elevation and cross section of ROB components
14. For this project three ROBs are proposed at Sadisopur, Jat Dumri in Bihta-
Daniyawan section and at Kadibigha in Chandi- Sarmera section
Elements of ROB
1. Retaining wall
2. Abutment
3. Pile
4. Pile cap
5. Pier
6. Pier cap
7. Beam/ girder
8. Bearing
CONTD.
18. TESTS PERFORMED
1. California bearing ratio (C.B.R.): -
CBR is a penetration test for evaluation of the mechanical strength of road sub grades and
base courses.
2. Field dry density using sand replacement method
Fig: On site FDD test using sand replacement method
The Field density test is quality
control test carried out at site
for knowing the increased
density or compaction achieved
at site on the soil layer.
20. 3. Sieve analysis
Sieve analysis is an analytical technique used to determine this particle size distribution
of granular material with macroscopic granular sizes. This sieve analysis technique
involves the layering of sieves with different grades of sieve opening sizes

REFLECTION OF WORK
23. CONCLUSION
The main objective of training is to provide an opportunity to Under
Graduates to identify, observe and practice how Engineering is
applicable in real industry. It is not only to get experience on technical
practices but also to observe management practices and to interact with
field worker.
Also I learnt the way of work in organization, the importance of
being punctual, the importance of maximum commitment in the
importance of team spirit.
In my opinion, I have gained lots of knowledge and experience needed to
be successful in a great a Engineering challenge, as in my opinion,
Engineering is after all a challenge not a job.
