4. At their Frechen site, Quarzwerke launched in 2014 a
successful environmental education project for pupils,
including refugee and mentally handicapped children.
As “Nature and Sand explorers” (NaSa), the children enjoy
exploring local nature, and learning about biodiversity
conservation along silica sand extraction. Equipped with an
exploration bag and tools, the children go out into the
woods & fields, to pools and ponds, and into the laboratory
and the quarry. They are guided by Quarzwerke’s biologist
and its spokesperson and a specially appointed teacher
specialised in providing environmental education for

6. In 2014, IMERYS (then S&B Industrial Minerals S.A.) kicked off
an initiative bridging innovation with public awareness and
biodiversity through a new economic activity for the local
community of Milos island, Greece.
The target is to rehabilitate the worked out areas of the
Trachilas perlite mine and convert them into a vineyard as a
separate economic activity to sustain local community welfare
when mining ceases. Viticulture is one of the traditional, yet
today almost entirely abandoned, economic activities at Milos
island, due to a phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th c. The
company selected to revive it building on a tradition already
ingrained in the island’s history and testimonials.

Since 2010, Sibelco’s limestone quarry in Winterswijk (NL), is
transformed yearly during 3 weeks in summer, in an open-air
theater staging 4 evenings of performances. The high-level
cultural events - ranging from the musical Jesus Christ
Superstar in 2010, to Pink Floyd’s The Wall in 2014 and to
Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer night’s Dream in 2016 -
attract visitors from all over the country and beyond. The
national newspapers titled “Steengroeve Theater Winterswijk”
as the most impressive open-air theater of the Netherlands.
This project is the result of extensive dialogue with local
stakeholders and can count on 400 volunteers.

12. A consolidated partnership of Sibelco Spain with the Dinopolis
Foundation led in 2015 to the discovery of 8 paleontological
sites in a new operation area of the Galve clay mine (Cerro
San Cristobal).
Over 1000 fossils were recovered: dinosaurs (Sauropods and
Ornithopods), footprints, lizards. The discovery in 2015 was of
extraordinary scientific importance because a new species of
dinosaur, Iguanodon galvensis, was found and the first nursery
of dinosaurs for the genus Iguanodon was published.

14. In 1991 Sibelco took over the quarry and mining activities
from a refractory company in the Eisenberg region
(Palatinate), and initiated a constructive and trustful
cooperation with the city of Eisenberg, contributing to the
urban development, while securing access to resources:
• Facilitating the development of a commercial park, by
opening up access that crossed the resource;
• Creating a river diversion to get access to the clay beyond
the river, in its safety pillar
• Upgrading of the access roads
• Developing areas for species & biotopes and local
recreation

Geosfera, adjacent to Sibelco’s Bukowno site, was created 2013
in the former Sadowa Gora dolomite quarry, comprising 8 ha.
Geosfera - a centre of excellence for education in Geology,
Paleontology, Botanical science and Meteorology – and Sibelco
Poland, initiated a cooperation around the European Minerals
Day 2015 by co-hosting a Conference on “nature and landscape
aspects in the process of restoring post-mining areas”.
Professors from the University of Silesia and Polish Academy of
Science addressed: the transformation of industrial zones into
public areas; the natural value of degraded land; added
functionality of post-mining areas; paleontological potential of
post-mining areas a.o.. The conference provided an insightful
scientific background and was much appreciated by Sibelco
employees and stakeholders alike.

18. The plant of Carmeuse Aisemont organizes school visits in
restored parts of the quarry, rich in biodiversity: orchids,
butterflies, reptiles, falcons, owls, … The visits are made for
local school groups with the support of local nature
associations who provide help in communicating science to
the children.
This is a pragmatic example of the close relationship
between the industrial operator and its social environment.
The education of young students on how industry can
integrate nature in its day-to-day life is an important part of
the Carmeuse sustainability program. It also helps the
teacher to give concrete examples to students on how they
can act for biodiversity in their own environment.

Omya Increase quarry acceptance in a sensible region
Omya’s quarry in Orgon is nearby an old typical Provencal village
in Natura 2000 area, and part of Alpilles regional natural park.
Failing to extend its historical quarry in 2000, Omya sought to
enhance dialogue and set up a local quarry council. The
meetings resulted in enhanced mutual understanding and
collaboration on projects such as:
• Creation of a public view point of the quarry
• Involvement of the local school in the recultivation activities
• Installation of specific habitats (stone boulders) in the
recultivated area for timon lipidus.
• Partnership with the Orgon museum, take part in local
events, such as open days for paleontology or European
heritage days
