Report for Results from Music Magazine Survey
In the followingSurvey,Ihave asked10 questionsrelatedtoMusicwhichwill helpme understand
whatis the bestgenre and type of audience Ishouldaimmymagazine to.I askedeightpeople to
complete mysurveyasitis an evennumberandenoughtohave reliable results.
I askedtheirage as the firstquestionsoI knowwhat
type of audience Iwouldmainlyhave towardsmy
magazine;thishelpsme targetmyfrontcoverto the
mostpopularage.However,myresultshave appeared
as equal withthree peopleas12 to 18 and 19 to 25
withalsotwopeople atthe age of 45 to 54. This
suggeststhatmy mainaudience formymagazine
shouldbe aimedat12 to25 yearoldsprobably
mentioningsome bandsforthe olderagestomake sure
my audience iswidelyspreadsothatthe magazine can
be boughtfrom a couple of differentagesratherthan
stickingtoa strictage.
Theirgenderwasaskedbecause itcouldgive aninsightas
to the theme of the front cover.Thisisbecause girlsand
boyshave differenttastesastowhattheywouldgofor
by lookingatthe coverof a magazine.Forexample ,to
stereotype,girlswouldbe more interestedinbright
coloursthat will attracttheirattentionwhereasboys
wouldprobablypreferthe usual darkcolourssuchas
blues,greysandreds.My resultswere thatthere are
62.50% of girlsandonly37.50% of boys.Thisgivesmore
ideastowardshavinga brightandbusysort of frontcover
to attract the bestaudience andmake more people buy
the magazine.

I askedwhattheiroccupationwasto the previous
questionsothatI knowwhat social statusthey’re in
whichwill give me amore precise guessatchoosinga
price for mymusicmagazine.Forexample,twopeople
frommy resultsare a waiter/waitresswhichwill
determine themasasocial grade D whichisworking
class.Salesassistantwouldalsocome underthiscategory
as well.However,aHotpointdeliverymanandteacher
wouldbe C2 as skilledworkingclassastheyhave been
trainedfullyforthe job.These resultsshowanaverage
income betweenthemwhichwouldhighlightthe ideaof
pricingmymagazine at a price of £1-£2.
I askedif theywere employedtogetan average of what
price theywouldpayfor the magazine asit wouldvary
betweenhavingajoband a good income andbeing
unemployedaspeople wouldn’twanttowaste a lotof
moneyinbuyinga magazine.Frommyresults,62.5% do
have a job and37.5% don’t.Therefore Ican interpretthat
I can have a price above the lowestamountasmore
people have jobsandwouldspendalittle more.

To followthe previousquestion,Iaskedwhyif they
saidtheydidn’treadand musicmagazinesandlet
themfill intheirownpersonal answer.Theseresults
will tell me if there isaproblemwiththe type of
magazine andhelpme try andchange mymagazine so
that more people willbe able tobuyit. However,my
resultsshowedthat twoaren’tveryinterestedin
readingmusicmagazinesandthe othertworesponses
preferreadingthe newspaperandbookswhich
informsme thattheyaren’treallybotheredaboutthe
musicside tothe magazine andlike more information
aboutthe worldandnovels. Therefore I can’tdo much
on the fact that theydon’tlike readingaboutmusic
and prefermore interestingandrelevantinformation
fromnewspapersasit won’tfitin withmymusic
magazine.
The resultsforthisquestion will helpme establish
whethermanypeople wouldreadthe magazine and
therefore buyit.Myresultsshow a 50/50 situation
whichshowsme a ratio of how many people wouldbuy
the magazine, rulingoutwhethertheywouldbuyit
because theyfemale, male orpartof that age group.

The reasonI askedthisquestionisbecause Iwantto find
out if people have readmusicmagazinesbefore and
whattype of genre they wouldgofortherefore helping
me choose the bestgenre to pickfrom mymagazine so
that I can get as manyreadersas possible.Myresults
fromthisquestionare that Q,NME and Vibe are the
mostpopularby 87.5%. This can establishthatthe genre
people mostlike ismore indieandpopratherthan rock
fromKerrang.It alsogivesan insightasto if theypick
these brandsof magazinesbecause of the boldfront
coveror the contentsbylookingatthe differencesin
each of them.
As interpretedfromthe lastquestion,myresultsfrom
the question‘whatgenresof musicdoyouprefer?’
wouldbe that popand indie are the mostpopular.
Therefore tellingme thattheyshouldbe the main
genresinmymusic magazine asitwouldinterestmany
people,makingitmore populartobuy.Pophas 87.5%
whereasIndie is75% alsoRock and R+B are both on 50%
whichwouldhelpthe ideaof includingalittle bitof that
type of genre as well allowingmore people tobe
interestedinitandactuallybuythe magazine.

In conclusion, thissurveyhashelpedme make abetterdecisiononwhattype of genre, price and
artistsI shouldpick formy musicmagazine.Fromthese resultsIhave chosentomake my magazine
£1.50 as itis inbetweenthe mostpopularprice range of £1-£2 and isaffordable forunemployed
people andisan easyprice forpeople withoccupations.Aswell asthat, mygenre wouldbe based
on Indie andPopas theywere the mostmentionedinthe type of artistsandgenrespeople prefer,
therefore makingmymagazine more interestingandeye-catchingforothers.People wouldalsobe
interestedinthe frontcoverswhichiswhatpeople firstlookatand judge. Therefore,Iwill base my
frontcoverson artistsin the Popand Indie genre whist includingothertypesof bandsandartistsof
differentgenrestoattracta lotof otherpeople tothe magazine increasingthe amountof how many
issold.
By askinghow much they were willingtopay, thisgave
me a more accurate assumptionastohow much
everyone wantedtopay eventhoughthey all have
differentorno occupations.Bya highpercentage
people wouldpay upto£1-£2 fora musicmagazine. £1-
£2 was picked50% more than £2-£3 and 0-99p which
makesmy decisionmore easierasI wouldgo forthe
mostpopularresultas itis whateveryone wantsand
will eventually sellmore asitis a reasonable price for
people whohave jobsandaffordable forthosewhoare
unemployedmakesmy decision.
Finally,Ichose toask theirfavourite artistorband
as an openquestiontoportraytheirdifferent
answerswhichwill helpme decide ongoodartists
to put onthe frontcoveror in the magazine to
attract more people tobuyitas theywouldfirstly
judge the magazine bythe coverlabel.Mostpeople
chose artistssuch as Beyoncé, TaylorSwiftand
Aurora whichsuggestmore Popgenre type of
artistswhichhighlightsthatIshould use Popinthe
frontcover as manyotherpeople wouldalsolike
these artists.Aswell asthatWombats,The Smiths
and Florence andthe Machine are more indie
persuadingmyideaof alsoputtingsome artistsin
thisgenre onthe frontcoveras well tomake my
magazine populartoall typesof genre,increasing
the numberof magazinessoldandread.
