When CIO Eric Hanson joined HUSCO International’s leadership team, he quickly set about identifying opportunities for his organization to reduce storage costs and improve performance. Using his previous experience at a multi-location manufacturing firm, he determined that HUSCO International’s challenges with file latency, increasing storage costs, and inability to collaborate cross-site could be solved by transitioning from traditional storage using NetApp filers to a consolidated cloud infrastructure powered by Panzura and Amazon S3.
Register for our upcoming webinar to learn how HUSCO International is using Panzura and Amazon S3 to take advantage of cloud storage economics that has the potential to save the company hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.

Results Summary
Amazon Web Services give you reliable, durable backup storage without the up-front capital expenditures and complex capacity-planning burden of on-premises storage. Amazon storage services remove the need for complex and time-consuming capacity planning, ongoing negotiations with multiple hardware and software vendors, specialized training, and maintenance of offsite facilities or transportation of storage media to third party offsite locations.
Storage is more than just the protocol or interface. It’s the lifeblood of application design and renewed architectures. Our customers have taught us that they need two things: scale and trust. 1. Make sure I can grow. 2. Make sure I can access what I need when I need it, (and of course help me keep costs down).
The suite of transfer services that support customers in their migrations means more choice. Large batches, incremental changes, constant streams or seamless integration are all part of the storage offering. Today we’re going to talk about two of the newest ways to do cloud data migration, Snowball and S3 Transfer Acceleration.
Note to presenters: Disk Transfer service is not EOL but has been deprecated out of the transfer services story in favor of Snowball. Snowball has already surpassed the amount of data imported over the lifetime of the disk transfer service.
EFS is in preview and due before the end of the year
The primary storage use case is one that provides primary storage to allow for storage of data long term.
Storage can be used for three different types of storage:
Block: raw storage that can be used for file systems or database applications. Block storage is typically accessed either directly through device files operating system interfaces, or indirectly via file systems created locally on the operating system.
File: File storage typically presented through the use of either the NFS or SMB protocols. Most times, SMB is used via the Common Internet File System, or CIFS and is used by Windows systems. These file protocols rely on TCP/IP connections to the provider of the storage
Object: Object storage provides an abstracted interface that takes individual “blobs” of data and returns an “address” or locator back to the data. It is typically API driven and presents no human readable format. Connections are made by TCP/IP.
The primary storage use case can be completely within AWS, where the storage is provided to EC2 instances, or in hybrid models where the storage can be connected to either on-premises or AWS operating system instances.
There are a number of workloads that are part of the Primary Storage use case:
Storage for workload – this can be for databases, home directories, just about anything that uses files or file systems on block storage
File distribution services – This workload takes files from one geographic or logical location and ensures that the files are distributed into other locations. Files distributed using this workload may have distributed locks applied to prevent simultaneous access, or may have caching services depending on the architecture provided.
Gateway for IP storage protocols – Gateways convert IP file protocols such as NFS or SMB to object storage using either virtual machines, physical appliances, specialized instances derived from AMIs, or combination of the three. Gateways can be implemented within AWS to allow for common access of objects created by other gateways of the same type.
Replications of storage via native replication – On-premises storage arrays have methods of replicating storage blocks that are both efficient for the particular array and proprietary to the brand. This use case provides the ability to extend these replication mechanisms into virtual instances within AWS
The Backup and Recovery use case is centered around the protection of data from various failure scenarios. These scenarios can come from on-premises failures, application errors, inadvertent deletion, or any other error that would result in data loss. Backups are snapshots of entire environments that allow for the point in time recovery from the loss scenarios.
Backups may be sourced from various clients:
Desktops/Laptop
Mobile devices
Physical servers
Virtual machines
AWS instances
Backups can be written to either local appliances (such as the ones listed in the Primary Storage use case) which then stream data to AWS, directly to AWS object storage, or some combination, depending on the needs of the customer.
Partners that participate in this area come in two flavors: Partners that provide a complete backup solution (software that actually performs the backup), and ones who provide back=up targets (areas where the backup is written to – these require some external piece of software to actually generate the backup). Be sure to understand which is which.
Some things to note about backups, which are commonly misunderstood, but can be clarified with a single statement:
Backups are not archives
Backups represent a single copy of the data at a point in time. What this means is that there will exist many copies of exactly the same data, or many copies of slight variations of the same data files, all contained within the total set of backups. Why care – this impacts the overall size required to maintain the set of backups, and also where they should be stored.
For this reason, the overall size of the backup grows at a non-linear, ever increasing size, with an unpredictable rate of growth. The overall size required for a backup is typically an order of magnitude or greater more than the amount of data actually being backed up.
Contrast the above statement with what an Archive consists of:
An archive is the only copy of any individual piece of data being protected. This is defined as the “authoritative” copy of the data. If changes are made to the file, that file then becomes the authoritative copy and the previous copy is either referenced as a complete separate piece of data, or replaced/deleted by the change in the file.
The size of the archive is directly proportional to the size of the original data, plus the change rate. It grows directly proportional to the change rate of the data set, so is somewhat predicable

I’ve overseen successful Panzura/AWS implementations for two distinct Enterprises.
In both instances, we selected the Panzura and AWS solution because it closely aligned with and even progress the IT strategic principles.
Leveraging cloud and strategic outsourcing to take the focus off supporting commodity IT
Investing in business and behavioral competencies, within IT, and reinvesting our refocused energies on delivering the most critical business priorities
Developing a culture of innovation that meaningfully changes business outcomes
The Panzura and AWS solution means that my team no longer needs to focus on managing data propagation within the enterprise, allows us to think about information management within context of our critical business processes
(not just a data dumping ground), and significantly improves the productivity of our business through near real-time access to information regardless of your seat on the globe.
HUSCO, was like many previous companies that I’ve worked with – and most likely it resembles many of the companies represented on this call today.
We were a global Company Encumbered by Unimaginative File System Solutions
Inefficient – Access times between sites unacceptable – pull up a file and go to lunch – this is a physics problem
Error Prone – Multiple versions of truth (files copied locally because of access times) which specifically impacted New Product Development
Lack of IT Operational Excellence – Backups, Escalating MPLS Costs, Cost of Data Proliferation
Alignment with IT Strategy – Leverage outsourcing and cloud technologies to eliminate the distraction of commodity IT, minimize investment in legacy technologies, and increase enterprise agility.
Strategy has consistently enabled increased and improved delivery of strategic outcomes and key business priorities. At HUSCO, project delivery increased 400% in one year.
Transitioning from traditional storage using traditional NAS to a consolidated, scalable cloud storage infrastructure powered by Panzura and Amazon S3
We started internationally. Our first deployment went to our manufacturing facility in the United Kingdom, closely followed by deployments to manufacturing sites in China and India.
Even without realizing the value of global file synchronization, our end users immediately began to comment on the improved response time to access files simply due to the solid state storage design of our new Panzura appliances.
Next we deployed to our two major data centers in the United States. This is when the magic happened.
Our solution allowed us to answer problems that impact many of us – How can you provide your enterprise with rapid access to critical information regardless of where they work? And how can you ensure that you have a single source of truth?
What can your business do when they don’t have to think about the technology and managing around its limitations?
