Presented at QCon NYC 2016. The Netflix API is the front-door for almost all device/UI requests from 1000+ device types to the Netflix backends. It serves everything from movie and show recommendations, profile, sign-up, and A/B test related functionality, to bookmarks and licenses for playback. Because all devices use this API, and because Netflix runs on devices of widely varying sizes and interaction models, it has served us well to enable a platform against which device teams write server-side scripts. Using Netflix as an example, the goal of this talk is to explore situations in which server-side scripting is a good solution for applications. I will describe our first approach, which uses Groovy scripts. I will detail how the scripts are uploaded and can make use of shared modules. This approach allows for high flexibility and performance as well as high developer velocity, at the expense of added risk of injecting scripts into running servers. I will then dive into a new approach that will isolate the scripts into their own containers without compromising the original goals and will allow teams to write scripts in node.js, a language that is more natural for them.

Translating Developer Productivity to Netflix Customer Delight

Traditionally, a tug of war has existed between service reliability and engineering velocity. Increasing speed to fuel product innovation has meant making tradeoffs in reliability. Netflix standardizes common functionality, like service discovery, configuration, metrics, logging, and RPC across services. This frees teams to focus on the unique business value of their service. It also enables us to evolve and maintain platform components independently from individual services. Even with a standard set of components, service owners still need to combine these disparate elements into a coherent platform. We reduce this friction by providing a preassembled platform where teams only need to provide their business logic, and not worry about assembling the service from scratch. We can further streamline the service lifecycle by providing automation and tooling for development, testing, deployment and operations. We provide "one click" solutions to automatically generate the associated pipelines, machinery, and infrastructure that's required to run their service reliably in production. These patterns, while described in a Netflix context, can be broadly applicable to increase both reliability and velocity of your microservices architecture.

The IBM MQ sink and source connectors allow you to flow messages between your Apache Kafka cluster and your IBM MQ queues. In this session I will share our lessons learned and top tips for building a Kafka Connect connector. Contrary to RPC-like applications, where communication and dependencies are explicitly defined between Services; data flowing between Event-Driven Applications is defined by how do they react to and emit events. A trade-off between Data-flow explicitness and Service autonomy becomes apparent between this two architectural-styles. The goal in this presentation is to demonstrate how Distributed-Tracing can help to cope with this trade-off, turning messaging exchange between decoupled, autonomous, Event-Driven Services, into explicit Data-flows. Zipkin project brings a Distributed-Tracing infrastructure that enables the collection, processing, and visualization of traces produced by RPC-based, as well as messaging-based applications. This presentation includes demonstrations on how to enable Tracing for Kafka Streams applications, Kafka Connectors, and KSQL; evidencing how implicit Services behavior and communication through the event-log become can become explicit via Distributed-Tracing. But collecting and visualizing traces is just the first step. In order to create insights from tracing-data, models has to be built to enable an better understanding from the system, and improve our operational capabilities. Including research-based experiences from Netflix[1] and Facebook[2] on how tracing-data has been processed and polished with multiple purposes, this presentation will cover how service-dependency analysis and anomaly-detection models can be built on top of it.
