In this session Robbie Mihalyi, VP of Engineering for ClustrixDB, provides an introduction to ClustrixDB, followed by an in-depth technical overview of its architecture, with a focus on distributed storage, transactions and query processing – and its unique approach to index partitioning.

ClustrixDB: how distributed databases scale out

MariaDB has multiple workload-optimized storage engines, including InnoDB for mixed workloads, MyRocks for write-intensive workloads, Spider for scalable workloads and ColumnStore for analytical workloads. In this session, Kenny Geiselhart discusses how to choose the right storage engine for individual tables, and how replication and asymmetric topologies can be used to further optimize MariaDB and the hardware it runs on for specific workloads.

iFood is the largest Brazilian-based food delivery app company. It connects users, restaurants, and deliverymen using an event-driven architecture using AWS SQS and SNS, with programming in Java and Node.js. Thales' team is responsible for delivering orders' events to restaurant devices at least once, which is currently done using a REST API polling and acknowledgment system. Learn how their database infrastructure evolved from a PostgreSQL database, but began to show limitations and was a single point of failure. Growing through a few intermediary steps, including Amazon DynamoDB, eventually, turning to Scylla for its data model and collections to condense multiple tables. Using Scylla, iFood reduced the time to process events and acknowledgments (from ~80ms to ~3ms) and reduced costs using Scylla vs DynamoDB by over 9x.

Scylla began with a Cassandra compatibility story, implementing Cassandra’s query language (CQL) and replicating its user-visible architecture. Recently we introduced “Alternator” - an experimental feature adding compatibility with a second NoSQL database: Amazon’s DynamoDB. In this talk we look at why DynamoDB’s API was chosen as a good target for our API extension, how DynamoDB is similar to Scylla - and how it differs, and how we can implement DynamoDB’s API in Scylla. We will describe our progress so far in making Alternator compatible with DynamoDB - and what still remains to be done so that any DynamoDB application can run unmodified on Scylla.

(DAT312) Using Amazon Aurora for Enterprise Workloads

Easy scalability is a powerful feature of Amazon Aurora. Scalability in its actual definition refers to being able to get larger or smaller depending on the need. Amazon Aurora allows you to easily achieve this by scaling the database instance up or down and adding or removing read replicas. Scaling across regions brings additional resilience to your architectures and could boost your application performance due to geographic proximity. You can perform all of these scaling operations through the Aurora console. You can also automate instance and read scaling using lambda function or scripts based on the usage pattern you define. You can extend the automation by feeding your database usage data from Aurora enhanced monitoring into Machine Learning to provide more sophisticated predictive patterns to drive your automation. In this session we will do a deep dive into how scalability works in Aurora and how to make the best use of it to reduce your cost, increase application performance and architect resilient applications. You should have good database knowledge and at least some experience with Amazon RDS or Amazon Aurora and should bring your own laptop.
