An annotated bibliography is an alphabetical list of potential sources for research, including full citations and brief summaries. Each entry contains a citation in correct MLA format and an annotation that evaluates the authority of the author, main ideas, intended audience, biases, strengths and weaknesses, and relevance to the research topic. Examples of annotated bibliographies can be found on the course site, in style manuals, or by asking teachers for help.
2. What is an Annotated Bibliography?
An annotated bibliography is a way for you to organize
your research.
An annotated bibliography is an alphabetical list of your
potential sources, complete with citations and a brief
description of each source.
A good annotated bibliography should help you
determine which sources are appropriate for your paper
and how you will incorporate them in a way that
strengthens your argument.
There are two vital elements to every entry in your
bibliography: the citation and the annotation.
3. What information should be included in
my citation?
A citation in your annotated bibliography should include
the same information as a citation for your “Works
Cited” page.
You must use the correct MLA format for each type of source.
The entries must be alphabetized.
You should have a variety of sources – consider having at least 1
book, 1 credible website, and 1 full-text periodical article from
an online library database.
4. What is an Annotation?
An annotation both summarizes and evaluates the material
found in a particular source. When writing an annotation you should
answer these questions:
1) Who is the author, and what is his/her authority or background?
2) What is the author's thesis? What are the author’s main claims?
3) Who is the author’s intended audience?
4) Is there any bias or slant in the article?
5) What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article?
6) Does the information in this article support or counter the thesis of your
research paper/project?
7) How relevant is this material in terms of your paper/project?
5. Where can I find examples of the
correct annotated bibliography format?
