To Whom It May Concern:
It is my pleasure to recommend Amanda Furtaw, 20 Liters Communications and Marketing Intern, for the
position in which she is applying. Amanda contacted me late July of 2012 expressing great interest, passion and
excitement in working with 20 Liters. (I am the Founder and was the Executive Director for 20 Liters until
January of 2013 when I accepted a position as a Program Officer for a local family foundation).
20 Liters is a non-profit organization based out of Grand Rapids, MI. We began by speaking to local church
leaders in Masaka, Rwanda after an outbreak of Cholera where over 500 people died due to contaminated water.
From that moment on we made it our mission to make dirty water clean for these vulnerable members of the
Masaka community and by 2012, provided clean water for over 14,080 people within their community.
Unfortunately we did not have the ability to offer internships due to staff constraints, but after corresponding with
Amanda, I realized that her passion, dedication, and excitement for this cause would really benefit our
organization and I decided to come up with a way in which she could work with us as an intern of
Communications and Marketing. Her job was to independently organize, design, fundraise, and market for, the
very first Walk for Water in East Lansing, MI
Because Amanda was attending school full time at Michigan State University, and our offices are located in Grand
Rapids, MI, her internship experience was something that she navigated entirely on her own. We corresponded
occasionally but Amanda really delved in and took the initiative to make this event successful. She began planning
for the event immediately. She designed flyers, web pages, and utilized social media to bring attention towards the
event and 20 Liters mission, as well as begin fundraising.
She decided on a goal of raising $1000 with this walk to bring clean water to those in need and ended up blowing
me away with having reached her goal before the event even took place. She continued to raise close to $200
more to end the event with well over her original fundraising goal.
Amanda is a very hard working, professional, and passionate individual, who I have no doubt will greatly benefit
your organization. Her compassion for important causes is evident in the way she eagerly accepts whatever task is
given to her and goes above and beyond to accomplish that task. I sincerely recommend you choose to make her
talent and enthusiasm a part of your organization. You will not be disappointed.
Sincerely,
Steven Mayer
Founder and Previous Executive Director of 20 Liters
