RN Variables
ANSWER QUESTIONS AFTER THE TREE CHARTS AND LABEL THE CHARTS AS ASKED. USE ONLY AS MANY COLLUMNS AS NEEDED.
EXAMPLE: Ricky Bobby thinks that adding pancake syrup to his pigs’ food will make them sleep less. He feeds the
pigs in pen A pig food mixed with pancake syrup. He feeds the pigs in pen B regular food without pancake syrup. For
the next week he times how long the pigs in each pen sleep and compares his results. Pen B pigs sleep 5 hours,
whereas, Pen A pigs sleep 10 hours.
Hypothesis: Ricky Bobby thinks that syrup will make them sleep less.
Problem: Will syrup make pigs sleep less?
Hypothesis: If I give pigs syrup, then __________________________
Ex. 1: Pen A Exp. 2 : Pen B
IND V. Add syrup No Syrup
CONSTANT Pig food Pig food
CONSTANT 1 week 1 week
DEP. V Sleep 10 hrs Sleep 5 hrs
LABEL THE:
Independent Variable—The one variable the scientist chose to change.
Constant—The other variables that stayed the same
Dependent Variable—The variable the scientist wants to measure/ observe
Circle the Control Group—the “normal” group that we compare things back to.
What is the conclusion? Ricky Bobby’s hypothesis is wrong, adding syrup to pig food actually made
his pigs sleep more! Other farmers can use this information to make sure they don’t feed
their pigs syrup unless they want them to sleep a lot!
1. Mrs. Henley’s friend told her that adding toothpaste to her face wash will make her have less
pimples. She believes her friend’s story so Mrs. Henley adds toothpaste to the face wash she puts on
the left side of her face. She puts her regular face wash on the right side of her face. She counts the
number of pimples on each side of her face and compares. Mrs. Henley had 2 pimples on each side to
begin with. After the experiment she counts 4 pimples on the left side of her face, and 15 on the right
side.

2. 2. Farmer Brown thinks that hanging a poster of a rooster (Foghorn Legern) in his chicken coops will make the chickens lay more
eggs. He hangs the poster in coop A and leaves coop B the same. He counts the number of eggs from each coop for a week and
compares his results. There were no eggs to start with. Coop B has 191 eggs and Coop A has 188 eggs.

2. Principal Dugger has to keep taping his fenders back on his truck. He usually uses masking tape. His brother Lugger
Dugger tells him that duct tape will work better. He thinks his brother may be right. Principal Dugger tapes the fender on
with his usual masking tape and one fender on with the duct tape and compares how long each fender stays on. The
masking tape fender stays on for 12 hours and the duct tape fender stays on for 48 hours.
Vocabulary: masking tape—usually a yellow/ white color about 1 inch think.
Duct tape—usually silver in color about 2-3 inches thick. It is also made in several colors and
patterns now.
Fender—front part of a car—the “bumper”

3. 3. Principal Moore thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of her teachers. She creates two groups of 20
teachers each and assigns each group the same task (in this case, they're supposed to staple a set of papers). Group A
teachers are given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B teachers are not given the special juice. After an
hour, Principal Moore counts how many stacks of papers each group has made. Group A made 587 stacks, Group B made
313 stacks.

4. Mrs. Eutsler thinks that students will perform better on math tests if they eat breakfast. To test her theory, she compares
test scores of her 42 students that eat breakfast and 42 students that don’t eat breakfast. She tests all her students at the
same time of day. Her students that ate breakfast scored an average of 91% /A and her students that didn’t eat breakfast
scored an average of 70%/ C.

4. 5. Ms. Fitzsimmons thinks that students that eat sugar are louder than students who don’t eat sugar. She has 60 of her
students eat a lot of sugar for a week, and 60 of her students are instructed to not eat any sugar for a week. She buys a
sound monitor that measures the loudness of her students on a scale of 1(quiet)-10 (loud). The sound monitor puts the
students with no sugar at a 2.0 loudness, and her students that do eat sugar at a level of 8.5 loudness.

6. Mrs. Bankston thinks that basketball players who exercise by doing jumping jacks before a practice make more free
throws than players who do not do jumping jacks. She made 3 of the basketball players do jumping jacks before their free
throws, and made sure that 3 other basketball players did not do jumping jacks before their free throws. The players who
did jumping jacks scored 20 points and the players who did not do jumping jacks scored 20 points.
