The Sun Belt Con-
ference has partnered
with Southern University
Law Center in providing
a unique opportunity for
one law student to gain
experience in an NCAA
Division I conference
office setting.
Third-year student
Alonzo Jackson began working as a summer
intern in the Sun Belt Conference headquarters
in June and has been an integral part of the com-
pliance efforts of the conference. Jackson has
helped manage the National Letter of Intent (NLI)
programandinterpretNCAABylawstoassistSun
Belt member institutions.
“BeingamemberoftheSunBeltConference
staff has shown me a side of collegiate athletics
that many people have never even thought about
or do not strive to be a part of,” Jackson said.
“I have been fortunate to be the first student
from Southern University Law Center to be se-
lected to work at the Sun Belt Conference, which
is an honor and privilege within itself,” he said.
“This experience has increased my passion
forsportsandhasgivenmeagreaterappreciation
forwhatgoesonbehindthescenes.Thishastruly
been a summer to remember.”
Earlyin2013,SunBeltConferenceCommis-
sioner Karl Benson and Assistant Commissioner
Summer Intern an Asset in Sun Belt Conference Headquarters
Scott Connors, ’08, developed the concept of
creating a yearly summer internship and chose
to use SULC’s pool of future professionals for
the program.
“We think this is an excellent opportunity to
provide a strong internship program and partner
with a local institution of higher learning,” Benson
said.
AccordingtotheCommissioner,Jacksonhas
been “a great addition to our staff this summer
and brings a ‘can do’ attitude to work every day.”
“It is exciting to have a young and driven in-
tern on staff who is proving that he will be a leader
in this field very soon,” Benson said.
“LookingbackatmywonderfultimeatSULC,
I always asked myself if I could change anything,
what would it be? The answer was simple; I
thought the school needed more internship op-
portunities for those of us who wanted to work in
athletics,” said Connors.
“There are a lot of students at SULC with a
passion to work in athletics and up until now, they
haven’t had a program in place to help facilitate
that passion. I know our decision to partner with
SULC will not only pay off for them and the Sun
Belt Conference, but for NCAA compliance as a
whole,” he said.
Connors believe interns like Jackson will
come in with real talent and as a result “they’re
going to open some eyes and shine some light on
the great things happening at SULC.”
