UDL: Implications for
Teaching ESL Students
By: Lisa Sieg, M.A. TESOL
Teaching Challenges & Solutions
• Different Language Proficiencies
• Challenges with Online Translation Programs
• Different Background Knowledge
Different Language Proficiencies
• Four Language Skills – Reading, Writing, Speaking,
and Listening (Sometimes grammar)
Different Language Proficiencies
• Students have different abilities with the different
skills
• Strong skill abilities usually transfer from the L1
Teaching Tips with UDL
• Provide information in multiple formats.
• Ask the student “Do you understand?” after giving
directions.
• Use simple language to explain your message. Then
follow up with an example.
Teaching Tips
• Provide information in multiple formats.

directions.
• Use simple language to explain your message. Then
follow up with an example.
Challenges with Online
Translation Programs
• Only the highest frequency word is used for the
translation.
• I miss you.
• Context is excluded. (Important for academic words.)
• Translates word by word, not at the sentence level.
• Different English dialects will confuse your students.
Teaching Tips
• Encourage your students to think in English. This isn’t a
translation class!
• Your student will learn academic words in English first.
They won’t know the translation for their first language.
• Encourage online translation dictionaries for individual
words only.
• Review important vocabulary and provide a list in
advance.
• Use visuals for descriptions.
Different Background Knowledge
• This is what students know about a subject before
you teach it.
• Different cultural experiences and perhaps traumatic
ones.
• Learning and psychological abilities have different
constructs across the world. Some learning or DSM
illnesses don’t exist in other parts of the world.
Treatment may also be different.
Teaching Tips
• Don’t be afraid to share American culture, especially
if you have international students. American culture
is an exceptionally curious and motivating topic.
• Openly address cultural differences and address
them in a neutral way. They are not good or bad,
they just ARE. Different people have different ways
of living. (Use this as an opportunity to grow all
students’ critical thinking skills.)
Teaching Tips
• Encourage all of your students to use Student
Accessibility Services and the Counseling Center.
These are campus resources available to all students.
They’re free so why not try them?
• Don’t stereotype your students. Consider them all as
individuals and get to know them in such a way.
