4. Defining "Organic"
1. If a food is labeled "organic," what does that mean? To meet
the organic standards set by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA), an organic food is one that is grown
without:
2. pesticides
3. fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge
4. herbicides
5. antibiotics
6. bioengineering
7. hormones
8. ionizing radiation

8. Organic Products
Organic. Products must be at least 95 percent organic
to use this term.
Products that contain at least 70 percent organic
ingredients may say "made with organic ingredients" on
the label, but may not use the seal. Foods containing
less than 70 percent organic ingredients can't use the
seal or the word "organic" on their product labels. They
can include the organic items in their ingredient list,
however

11. 1.No Chemical Toxins
Pesticides are chemicals such
as fungicides, herbicides, and
insecticides. These chemicals
are widely used in
conventional agriculture and
residues remain on (and in)
the food we eat.
Since organic food is not
prepared using chemical
fertilizers, it does not
contain any traces of these
strong chemicals and might
not affect the human body in
negative ways. Natural
fertilizers, like manure, work
perfectly fine, and organic
farmers are happy to use this
smellier, yet safer, form of
fertilizer.
12. 2. More Nutrients
Results of a 2016 European study show
that levels of certain nutrients,
including omega-3 fatty acids, were up
to 50 percent higher in organic meat
and milk than in conventionally raised
versions. This may be because organic
milk and beef come from cattle that
graze on a natural diet of grass, while
conventional meat and milk usually
comes from animals fed with grain.
Some people strongly believe that
organic food tastes better than non-
organic food. The prominent reason for
this belief is that it is produced using
organic means of production.
Furthermore, organic food is often sold
locally, resulting in availability of fresh
produce in the market, which usually
does taste better than produce that has
been frozen, shipped, and transported
across long distances.
13. 3.It is Good for Planet
Organic farming practices
reduce pollution (air, water,
soil), conserve water, reduce
soil erosion, increase soil
fertility, and use less energy.
Farming without pesticides is
also better for nearby birds
and small animals as well as
people who live close to or
work on farms.
As harmful chemicals are not
used in organic farming,
there is minimal soil, air and
water pollution; thus
ensuring a safer and healthier
world for future generations
to live in.
14. 4.It is not genetically
modified
Genetically Modified
Organisms (GMOs) or
genetically engineered
(GE) foods are plants or
animals whose DNA has
been altered in ways that
cannot occur in nature or
in traditional
crossbreeding, most
commonly in order to
be resistant to pesticides
or produce an insecticide.
In most countries, organic
crops contain no GMOs
and organic meat comes
from animals raised on
organic, GMO-free feed.
15. 5.Healthier Livestock
The use of antibiotics in
conventional meat
production helps create
antibiotic-resistant strains of
bacteria. This means that
when someone gets sick from
these strains they will be less
responsive to antibiotic
treatment. Not feeding
animal byproducts to other
animals reduces the risk of
mad cow disease (BSE). In
addition, the animals are
given more space to move
around and access to the
outdoors, both of which help
to keep the animals healthy
17. 7.It is certified
This is a voluntary
certification regulated by the
Humane Farm Animal Care, a
non-profit organization aimed
at ensuring the humane
treatment of farm animals.
The label means that animals
have ample space, shelter,
and gentle handling to limit
stress, ample fresh water,
and a diet without added
antibiotics or hormones.
Animals must be able to roam
around and root without ever
being confined to cages,
crates, or tie stalls
18. 8.The Payoff
Fresh food tastes better.
Organic food is usually
fresher because it
doesn’t contain
preservatives that make
it last longer. Organic
produce is often (but
not always, so watch
where it is from)
produced on smaller
farms near where it is
sold.
