THEORY & UNDERSTANDING
THE CONCEPTS OF WORK
RELATIONSHIPS/TEAMS
LET US TAKE A
LISTEN!
How does He or
She reacts under
pressure?
So, what’s
work
relationships?
Workplace relationships are unique
interpersonal relationships with
important implications for the
individuals in those relationships, and
the organizations in which the
relationships exist and develop.
Workplace relationships directly affect a worker's ability
and drive to succeed. These connections are
multifaceted, can exist in and out of the organization,
and be both positive and negative. One such detriment
lies in the nonexistence of workplace relationships,
which can lead to feelings of loneliness. Workplace
relationships are not limited to friendships, but also
include superior-subordinate, acquaintances, and
sometimes Foes.
Work relationships can make
or mar both individual &
company
Work Relationship at different times in history
Work relationships at
this time was very
limited. Majorly just one
type of Work
relationship existed
• Master / Slave
relationships
Communication within
this relationship was
limited to only work,
and workers were
forced to work within
very close proximity
The Age of globalization
and personal computing. It
was during this era that the
cubicle system in the office
space was eradicated to
favor open office systems.
In the era where work
becomes digital,
communication lines and
teamwork now
distinguishes between
success and failure.
Mentoring becomes key
The internet in this era,
gave rise to a lot of new
concepts in the way work
relationships are set up.
• Remote Work
• Globalization
• Global Networks
• Less Hierarchy in the
workplace
2000 - Now1960 - 20001870 - 19601784 - 1869
This era gave rise to the
realignment of
relationships within the
workspace. A number of
wars and global
movement demolished
the notion of the master/
slave relationships.
The Middle Class was
born during this era.
• Peer to Peer
Relationships
• Employer/ Employee
Relationships
The communicator is always reading the latest news
and makes sure to keep you up to date as well. With
all the latest information at your fingertips, you’re sure
to do your best work for your company
Communicators
Be wary of foes in your company. Negative relationships
between co-workers can be damaging for the company, so
it’s best to address the problem before it gets worse
Foes
Many work relationships don’t advance past acquaintances. This can
result in poor communication, no cooperation and low productivity
levels. Once you’ve been acquaintances with someone, it’s a good
idea to work on good communication to build up the work relationship.
This will help you later on when you need to network with others.
Acquaintances
While mentors coach you and teach you about your career,
advocates work to inspire and motivate you. Advocates help
others because they care about them as people, as opposed
to helping for personal gain.
Advocates
Trailblazers are those colleagues at your company that
set a great example for you to follow. They can motivate
you to be a trailblazer for others, which will help your
company overall.
Trailblazers
A mentor relationship is when one colleague is more knowledgeable
or experienced than the other and uses this knowledge to educate
others. Mentor relationships can be beneficial to both your career and
the company you work at, because they encourage you to work
toward your goals, and they have the tools to tell you how to do it.
Mentors
We relate with colleagues at different
levels…

Why are work relationships important?
Self Purpose
When there is a good working relationship with
peers, there is that tendency to believe that
personal ambitions can be actualized.
Job Satisfaction
This works hand in hand with every other
callout. The more motivation or morale a
person has to work, the higher the satisfaction
from the Job
Job Productivity
The productivity level of the worker would
increases with better Work Relationships
Workers Motivations
Peer to Peer and hierarchical relationships
plays an important role in motivating a worker
Job Involvement
The workers in an establishment feel more
involved when they have good work
relationships with superiors
Work
Relationships are
the foundation on
which great
successes are
built
Example of Good Work Relationships
Consequences of Bad Work Relationships
If the Relationship
within a team is
horrible, there is no
limit to how bad things
can get.
A Team
without trust
often makes
disappointing
progress!!
Future of Work and
Work Relationships
What does
the future of
work look like
to you?
...and
WHY?
Tech. is
redefining and
reshaping
EVERYTHING!
The Future is
Young
The continent has a mean age of 20.6
Africa Today
According to UN the average age in the country is
19, to increase to 24 in the next 40 years.
Nigeria
The average age in the country and the continent is
low. This implies that the average age in the work
force is also low, of about 21 years in 2017.
Due to the reduced mean age of the country and
continent, the mean age in the work force would
equally be young
Summary
Implications of these Trends
Greater emphasis will be placed on
retraining and lifelong learning as the
workforce tries to stay competitive in the
global marketplace and respond to
technological changes.
Lifelong Learnings
Future productivity growth will support
rising wages and may affect the wage
distribution; the tie between employment
and access to fringe benefits will be
weakened.
Increasing overall wages
Employees will work in more
decentralized, specialized firms, and
employer-employee relationships will
become less standardized and more
individualized.
Remote Work
Slower labor force growth will encourage
employers to adopt approaches to
facilitate greater labor force participation
among women, the elderly, and people
with disabilities.
Diversification of the workforce
The work environment is going
virtual…
With the less standardized
employer – employee
relationship, the future of
work is Remote.
Not tied to any physical
location.
So, what then
should be the
new debate?
Doweneedtosee
theshrink?
WHY is because…
The company has identified six "core behaviors" that it
hopes will make a success of the approach:
Focus on outputs – it is shifting its focus to the work staff do
rather than the time they sit at their desk.
Communicate effectively – employees will need to keep in touch
with colleagues throughout the working day, co-ordinate with
teammates to ensure they are not all out of the office at the same time
and be in the office more than they are elsewhere.
Use technology – staff will be empowered to work in the
environment best suited to the task at hand and use technology where
it is more efficient than meeting in person
Set your boundaries – employees will be encouraged to take
breaks and switch off but will be expected to "work as hard and as
well" as they always have.
Recognize we are all different – Publicis Groupe has reminded
its employees to be sensitive to their colleagues' needs and permit all
"reasonable requests" unless they are incompatible with the task
being performed.
Trust one another – this asks managers to trust their staff not to
take advantage of the new approach and for staff to trust that the
people managing them will not hold it against them if they work
flexibly.
However, our worst
fear will be…”THE RISE
OF MACHINES”
AI is going to displace workers or come as a
benefit to them?
... Many fear that the rise of AI will lead to
machines and robots replacing human
workers and view this progression in
technology as threat rather than a tool to
better ourselves.
