2. My Teaching Philosophy
Positive Learning Environment
Underpinning my philosophy is a personal belief that that all children are unique and diverse; that they each bring strengths and potential to
the learning context. As a teacher I am passionate about being part of their learning journey, so they are more likely to leave school feeling
motivated and empowered.
Culturally Responsive Practices
He oranga ngākau, he pikinga waiora. (Positive feelings in your heart will enhance your sense of self-worth)
The above whakataukī encapsulates how I want to influence those with whom I interact. I believe it is important to engender positive
feelings in peoples’ hearts, and enrich their self-worth; whether it be children, whānau, colleagues, or members of the community.
Effective Pedagogy
I endeavour to promote and engender skills of self-management and self-direction in my children, as well as a willingness to work
collaboratively with others and encourage the taking of risks. It is therefore important to identify particular learning needs so that the
curriculum is accessible to all learners; they all need opportunities to taste success.
Professional Relationships / Whanaungatanga
I strive to achieve positive interactions with my students to enhance their learning progression as well as engaging in collegial relationships
for professional support and mentoring. Communication with parents / whānau to further support students' learning outcomes is paramount
to my teaching philosophy. Being active and visible in one’s community is important to me, through attending and contributing to
community activities and events.
Effective Classroom Management
Being fair and consistent is vital to ensure effective management of behaviours in my classroom at all times. I also set high expectations
teemed with positive feedback to reinforce good behaviours among my students.
Digital Technologies
Students will learn in, through and about digital technologies as I strive to invoke Innovation, Inquiry and Curiosity in my students.
3. As a member of your staff...
Culturally competent
Being multi-lingual, I am attuned to cultural diversity. I have a good understanding and first hand experience of different cultures, languages and
values. I am confident in teaching te reo and other languages and the cultures to my students.
Excellent communication skills
I am able to relate well with children of all ages, culture and background. I create positive rapport with all my children. I also ensure I
demonstrate professional relationships with Principal, staff, parents and whānau at all times.
Professional manner and presentation
I am extremely professional and conduct myself appropriately, yet I have a great sense of humour and enjoy the fun side of life.
Active and contributing team member
I am a team player and work collaboratively with all the teachers. When the opportunity arises I can lead and work
independently. I am highly committed to being involved in all aspects of school life.
High organisational skills
I am very professional, dedicated and enthusiastic towards teaching and learning. I take pride in my organisation and is always
prepared to teach.
Pleasant and approachable personality
I am calm with my students and enjoy listening to them as I know the significance of creating a safe space for the children to express themselves.
I also enjoy the humour and fun that children bring into the learning environment.
Highly reflective practitioner
I am self-reflective and believe in engaging the support of other colleagues to further improve the quality of my teaching. Being a creative
thinker, I enjoy thinking outside the box to achieve the best learning outcomes among my children.
A passion for technology being integrated into the classroom learning
I am confident incorporating digital technologies efficiently in my daily programmes. I have used various web-based media to teach and get the
children to publish their work. I have used Google Doc and Google Sites as part of my planning successfully and realise the importance of
transparency that it offers.
4. Literacy
An area of strength I possess is in the Literacy curriculum – carrying through from my Bachelor’s Degree in English combined with my experience
as English teacher in Malaysia and QPS Librarian have shaped my strength in teaching Writing and Reading in the English Language.
Numeracy
I believe that sound numeracy base skills are the foundation for all other learning in mathematics. I am enthusiastic about teaching children
numeracy strategies that will enable children to transfer their learning to a variety of everyday situations. I also believe that it is imperative to
provide authentic contexts for numeracy learning. I have had direct teaching experience of numeracy whilst on placement, during school visits
and my volunteering and relief work in local schools.
Science
I am very keen about incorporating Science in my daily programme as a platform to stimulate children to pursue inquiry, and to develop a sense
of curiosity, wonder, interest and a love of science. Children need access to authentic and meaningful contexts, in order to become the
empowered and motivated scientists of the future.
Digital Technologies
I believe in the purposeful integration of Information and Communication Technology into the daily programme. I am interested in growing the
skills and confidence of children to enable them to use a range of ICT independently as a learning tool.
Teaching As Inquiry
I believe in taking active ownership of improving my teaching pedagogy by constantly refining my teaching practice to cause leaning among my
children. Reflective practice will enhance my teaching practice, learners’ outcomes, and whānau engagement.
Te Reo Māori and Learning Languages
I have basic written and oral proficiency in te reo Māori and am continuously striving to improve myself. I am confident in weaving te reo Māori
as part of my classroom programme. Being multi-lingual, I am able to incorporate second language learning (Malay and French) as part of my
classroom programmes.
