QUESTION 3

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
Grime music is mostly targeted towards the youth, therefore the audience we were tying to target went between the
ages of 15-25 give or take a few years. This means that our target audience feedback will be quite honest as there are
so many other signed grime artist out there that are really popular and plus as our video is posted publicly on youtube
our viewers wont hold back hopefully on what they have to say as criticism is good to evolve on for our artist as he
needs to please his viewers in order to gain success however he can’t please everybody. As our video is public there is
no restriction for someone of a senior age to come and say for example that they believe he is a bad influence. K-os
talks about his life in the society he lives in and how living in East London has made him what he is today and how
music is possibly the only hope he has left if he wants to provide for his family in the future.
SPREADING THE WORD

                                                                       TWO STEP FLOW
                                                                         THEORY

                                                                     WORD OF MOUTH

Initially when we uploaded at college when we got home we all posted it on our
facebook pages and other social networking sites that we were on, we also told as
many people as we could beside being proud of our work we knew we would need to
evaluate the feedback. I also got in contact again with K-OS for my group and asked
him to post it on all is social networking pages which included facebook, twitter and
myspace. After telling him to do that we immediately noticed a significant different in
our view count on youtube and started acquiring more feedback on our production.
PRIMARY FEEDBACK FROM FELLOW A2 MEDIA STUDENTS
This was our first initial attempt to spread the word of our music video we therefore asked anyone and everyone who
was a media student to look at our music video and give truthful comments we chose to go to the library and find
people that we didn’t know so well so that they would be able to give honest opinions. However it was also important
for us to know how much they enjoy grime music and how much they like it or don’t like it, so that we could ask
appropriately. Those who had no interest in grime we told them to try and respond to us solely about the editing
aspect of the music video whereas those who did like grime an overall look at the product.

COMMENTS RECEIVED FROM THOSE WHO DO ENJOY GRIME MUSIC:
•“GOOD VIDEO REMINDS ME OF KOKE”
•“WOW I DIDN’T EXPECT THAT LEVEL THAT’S DECENT, LIP SYNC WAS ON POINT”
•“TO BE HONEST THE QUALITY OF THE VIDEO WASN’T THAT GREAT AND IT SEEMED A BIT TOO DARK HOWEVER I
GET THAT ITS SUPPOSE TO BE AGGRESSIVE BUT I THINK YOU COULD HAVE STILL SHOWED THAT IN DAY.

COMMENTS RECEIVED FROM THOSE WHO DON’T ENJOY GRIME MUSIC:
•“I DIDN’T UNDERSTAND SOME OF THE TERMS THEREFORE THE PERFORMANCE AT SOME POINTS DIDN’T MAKE
SENSE TO ME BUT I LIKE THE WAY YOU USED TEXT IN TIME WITH THE MUSIC THAT MUST HAVE TAKEN YOU SOME
TIME”. (THE EDITING THEREFORE PAID OFF GETTING EACH IMAGE DOWN TO 0.05 SECONDS)
•“I LOVE THE BIT WHERE THE ARTIST MOVES HIS HAND UP AND THE SCREEN FOLLOWS”. (THIS WAS AN EDITING
TECHNIQUE I LEARNT IN MY OWN TIME AS I REALLY WANTED TO DO IT I THEN SHOWED MY GROUP WHO WERE
HAPPY WITH THE OUTCOME)
•“CONSIDERING THE SONG WAS SO FAST PASED THERE WAS A LOT OF CUTS YOU DID THAT REALLY WELL”.
FEEDBACK FROM MY FOCUS GROUP
For my focus group I chose to use three people from my target audience who had knowledge of grime culture I also
decided to debrief them on the questions before hand so they would not struggle with certain terminology used.
THE QUESTIONS I CHOSED TO ASK WHERE…
•COULD YOU ESTABLISH THIS MUSIC VIDEO STRAIGHT AWAY WITH THE GRIME GENRE? IF SO HOW?
PARTICIPANT 1: YES, BECAUSE OF HIS STYLE OF RECITING HIS LYRICS AND THE BEAT
PARTICIPANT 2: YES, BECAUSE OF THE CLOTHES HE'S WEARING
PARTICIPANT 3: YES, BECAUSE THE WAY THE MUSIC VIDEO IS CUT DIRECTLY TO THE BEAT OF THE MUSIC
•DO YOU BELIEVE THAT TOO MUCH EFFECTS WERE USED IF SO WHY?
PARTICIPANT 1: NO, BECAUSE THERE WERE EFFECTS WERE THERE NEEDED TO BE
PARTICIPANT 2: NO, BECAUSE THERE ONLY SEEMED TO BE EFFECTS WHEN MY ATTENSION WAS ALMOST LOST
PARTICIPANT 3: NO, BECAUSE I DIDN’T NOTICE A LOT OF EFFECTS IF ANYTHING THERE SHOULD BE MORE
•LOOKING AT THE OTHER PIECES OF THIS MEDIA PROMOTIONAL PACKAGE FOR THE ARTIST CAN YOU UNDERSTAND
WHAT HE REPRESENTS AND THE STRUGGLE HE CLAIMS TO HAVE GONE THROUGH?
PARTICIPANT 1: YEAH THE ARTIST HAS A CLEAR IMAGE WHICH SEEMS TO BE UPHOLDED IN ALL THE MEDIUMS.
PARTICIPANT 2: THE MEDIA PACKAGE SEEMS TO REPRESENT THE ARTIST WELL
PARTICIPANT 3: YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT THE ARTIST IS ABOUT BY SOLELY LOOKING AT THE CDDIGIPAK
•IS THE MAIN PRODUCT REALISTIC ENOUGH DO YOU FEEL IT COULD BE SEEN ON A REALISTIC SCALE?
PARTICIPANT 1: YES, AT SOME LEVEL CONSIDERING IF YOU HAD A BETTER RECORDING CAMERA
PARTICIPANT 2: NO, BECAUSE THE EXPERIENCE IS SOMETHING YOU CANT OBTAIN WITH ONE VIDEO
PARTICIPANT 3: YES, IF THE SONG HAD ABIT MORE MEANING AND IF IT HAD BETTER LOCATION SCOUTERS ETC.
•COULD YOU EXPECT THE DESIGNS FOR THE CDDIGIPAK ON THE SHELVES ON FOR EXAMPLE HMV?
PARTICIPANT 1: YES, ACTUALLY IT IS QUITE LIKE THE STANDARD OF DESIGN I AM USED TO SEEING.
PARTICIPANT 2: YES, BECAUSE GRIME ARTIST TEND TO USE THIS STYLE OF DESIGNING
PARTICIPANT 3: NO, AS IT ISN’T BOLD EOUGH AND DOESN’T HAVE OVEREXAGGERATED EFFECTS HOWEVER I CAN
SEE HOW THAT WOULDN’T GO IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ARTIST IMAGE AND MUSIC VIDEO.
FEEDBACK FROM MESSAGES SENT VIA FACEBOOK
I decided to create another short questionnaire as I wasn’t completely satisfied with the amount of
feedback I had, I felt that the more people I asked the better it was for me. I chose to send a
message to about 15 people on my friends list so that I could hopefully get at least 10 responses. I
ended up getting 9 so I asked one person who I had already started a conversation with to do it
therefore I now had an even 10.

The message read…
Hey guys,
I was wondering if you guys could complete a quick 5 question questionnaire for me for my A2 media coursework it
would be very much appreciated and it will only take three minutes or so.
If you decide to the link and questions are followed at the bottom there YES/NO questions so you don’t need to
stress 
FEEDBACK FROM MESSAGES SENT VIA FACEBOOK…
WHERE YOU INTRIGUED BY THE PACED EDITING OF THE MUSIC
                           VIDEO?

This pie chart evidently shows that people enjoyed
our music video editing and felt that it was good
enough to keep them intrigued. However one person
                                                            YES
NO believed it wasn’t good enough to take there
attention this may mean that we could add in some
more effects or possibly sound effects to bring back
                                                                                 the audiences attention.

DID YOU FIND YOURSELF FEELING LIKE THE VIDEO HAD LOST
                                                                                  YOUR ATTENSION AT ANY POINT?

This conformed that although our audience was
intrigued by the fast pace editing most lost focus at
some point in the video and those who didn’t felt it
was good enough knowing that it was created by
media students and not professional media YES

All of the 10 people we asked were hoping us the
best for the future and would be more than happy to
see another production created by us this is a really
positive thing to know and motivates me to believing

I could possibly pursue this idea of becoming a media NO

DO YOU THINK THE VIDEO CAPTURES THE GRIME GENRE
                                 WELL?

A majority of the people believed it captured the
grime genre well this is good too know that the
research does pay off and if we didn’t plan this our
audience wouldn’t be able to identify the genre.
                                                             YES
However it should be that all say that we have
NO captured it well meaning that there is no boundary
for the amount of research done therefore in the
future we should focus more on the pre production
                                                                                         stage.

DATA SHOWING HOW PEOPLE DISCOVERED OUR VIDEO

It was evident that our viewers discovered our main product and watch it on their phones. We also learnt that
embedding it on our facebook pages as well as telling the artist to do so was the right choice in terms of getting people
                                                      to watch it.
It is a huge achievement to know that our video was watched in the united states as this is where major record
labels are based and they have people continuously watching over youtube to try and scout artist that they have
                                              an interest in signing.

This proves that we targeted the age
group we wanted to target as well as
targeting a more elder age group in males
but a slightly younger age range within
                                                                                         females.
This explains that all media consumers can become media producers however the amount of success that they
will achieve is only dependent on how popular they are. As we have made a music video people will watch it
but the amount of people will decrease daily as we are not official media producers because we do not have
that recognition but just the facilities.

After acknowledging that we had some elderly men and women viewing our main product we knew that now
our feedback would be more broad even though we are targeting the youth there is no harm in elder people
liking this type of genre maybe they went through the same struggles and can relate its possible.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNT FROM MY AUDIENCE FEEDBACK
The audience feedback was very critical for us as it gave us the chance to realise if our music video and other
ancillary text were a success. I chose to ask other A2 Media students those who both liked and disliked grime genre
music so that I would have a honest opinion on the editing and then on the overall outlook of my main product. As
I was in the library I would see people who I didn’t know and ask them if they did media and if so could they
comment on my music video by typing in there comment on a word document which I had open on a computer
therefore all the comments would be anonymous so people would be restricted in not being honest. I also created
a focus group that fitted the description of my target audience perfectly and had them fill out a little questionnaire
I had made with five primary questions on it with definitions of terminology used in the questions, this gave me a
strong sense of feedback. I also placed my music video link on facebook the issue with this is that it is a social
networking site therefore sometimes some people don’t take it seriously on the other hand the like’ button
available on facebook seemed to be beneficial in terms of having people simply say they liked it without having to
comment but the downfall is that I don’t know the reasons why they liked it. But overall the attempts to attain
feedback seemed to go accordingly as I was able to gain a positive vibe from people. Overall I believe gathering the
data from talking to people first hand and getting them to fill out quick questionnaire worked much more
successful then putting it on a social networking site like facebook because friends can feel to take it as a joke and
laughing it off therefore not giving accurate feedback.

Example of how people take things as a joke as it is a
                                                                   social networking site.
POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS BASED ON FEEDBACK
The audience feedback has shown us were could have made improvements, these are vital to take into account as
we are trying to please our target audience with the visuals, therefore our main purpose is to acknowledge the fact
if our viewers were gratified or not.
One of the three in my focus group said that they could imagine seeing our product on a realistic scale as they
didn’t believe we had enough experience to improve all our faults which is true as this is our first video. Another
one of three when asked if they could see our ancillary task designs on the shelves at for example HMV they
replied no because they felt the design wasn’t over exaggerated enough to grasp their attention and for them to
notice it on a shelf as it needs to use more colour despite the fact that the artist is meant to be a ‘street artist’. I
took this in to account and realise what the participant meant that because the artist Is obviously hoping to get
signed it should reflect a more ambitious poster it might be slightly artificial and posed however it represents the
artist dream and or it should represent the song more, because you can still be dramatic by using dull colours.

AliSheikh A2 Media Evaluation - Question 3

  • 1. QUESTION 3 WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
  • 2. Grime music is mostly targeted towards the youth, therefore the audience we were tying to target went between the ages of 15-25 give or take a few years. This means that our target audience feedback will be quite honest as there are so many other signed grime artist out there that are really popular and plus as our video is posted publicly on youtube our viewers wont hold back hopefully on what they have to say as criticism is good to evolve on for our artist as he needs to please his viewers in order to gain success however he can’t please everybody. As our video is public there is no restriction for someone of a senior age to come and say for example that they believe he is a bad influence. K-os talks about his life in the society he lives in and how living in East London has made him what he is today and how music is possibly the only hope he has left if he wants to provide for his family in the future.
  • 3. SPREADING THE WORD TWO STEP FLOW THEORY WORD OF MOUTH Initially when we uploaded at college when we got home we all posted it on our facebook pages and other social networking sites that we were on, we also told as many people as we could beside being proud of our work we knew we would need to evaluate the feedback. I also got in contact again with K-OS for my group and asked him to post it on all is social networking pages which included facebook, twitter and myspace. After telling him to do that we immediately noticed a significant different in our view count on youtube and started acquiring more feedback on our production.
  • 4. PRIMARY FEEDBACK FROM FELLOW A2 MEDIA STUDENTS This was our first initial attempt to spread the word of our music video we therefore asked anyone and everyone who was a media student to look at our music video and give truthful comments we chose to go to the library and find people that we didn’t know so well so that they would be able to give honest opinions. However it was also important for us to know how much they enjoy grime music and how much they like it or don’t like it, so that we could ask appropriately. Those who had no interest in grime we told them to try and respond to us solely about the editing aspect of the music video whereas those who did like grime an overall look at the product. COMMENTS RECEIVED FROM THOSE WHO DO ENJOY GRIME MUSIC: •“GOOD VIDEO REMINDS ME OF KOKE” •“WOW I DIDN’T EXPECT THAT LEVEL THAT’S DECENT, LIP SYNC WAS ON POINT” •“TO BE HONEST THE QUALITY OF THE VIDEO WASN’T THAT GREAT AND IT SEEMED A BIT TOO DARK HOWEVER I GET THAT ITS SUPPOSE TO BE AGGRESSIVE BUT I THINK YOU COULD HAVE STILL SHOWED THAT IN DAY. COMMENTS RECEIVED FROM THOSE WHO DON’T ENJOY GRIME MUSIC: •“I DIDN’T UNDERSTAND SOME OF THE TERMS THEREFORE THE PERFORMANCE AT SOME POINTS DIDN’T MAKE SENSE TO ME BUT I LIKE THE WAY YOU USED TEXT IN TIME WITH THE MUSIC THAT MUST HAVE TAKEN YOU SOME TIME”. (THE EDITING THEREFORE PAID OFF GETTING EACH IMAGE DOWN TO 0.05 SECONDS) •“I LOVE THE BIT WHERE THE ARTIST MOVES HIS HAND UP AND THE SCREEN FOLLOWS”. (THIS WAS AN EDITING TECHNIQUE I LEARNT IN MY OWN TIME AS I REALLY WANTED TO DO IT I THEN SHOWED MY GROUP WHO WERE HAPPY WITH THE OUTCOME) •“CONSIDERING THE SONG WAS SO FAST PASED THERE WAS A LOT OF CUTS YOU DID THAT REALLY WELL”.
  • 5. FEEDBACK FROM MY FOCUS GROUP For my focus group I chose to use three people from my target audience who had knowledge of grime culture I also decided to debrief them on the questions before hand so they would not struggle with certain terminology used. THE QUESTIONS I CHOSED TO ASK WHERE… •COULD YOU ESTABLISH THIS MUSIC VIDEO STRAIGHT AWAY WITH THE GRIME GENRE? IF SO HOW? PARTICIPANT 1: YES, BECAUSE OF HIS STYLE OF RECITING HIS LYRICS AND THE BEAT PARTICIPANT 2: YES, BECAUSE OF THE CLOTHES HE'S WEARING PARTICIPANT 3: YES, BECAUSE THE WAY THE MUSIC VIDEO IS CUT DIRECTLY TO THE BEAT OF THE MUSIC •DO YOU BELIEVE THAT TOO MUCH EFFECTS WERE USED IF SO WHY? PARTICIPANT 1: NO, BECAUSE THERE WERE EFFECTS WERE THERE NEEDED TO BE PARTICIPANT 2: NO, BECAUSE THERE ONLY SEEMED TO BE EFFECTS WHEN MY ATTENSION WAS ALMOST LOST PARTICIPANT 3: NO, BECAUSE I DIDN’T NOTICE A LOT OF EFFECTS IF ANYTHING THERE SHOULD BE MORE •LOOKING AT THE OTHER PIECES OF THIS MEDIA PROMOTIONAL PACKAGE FOR THE ARTIST CAN YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT HE REPRESENTS AND THE STRUGGLE HE CLAIMS TO HAVE GONE THROUGH? PARTICIPANT 1: YEAH THE ARTIST HAS A CLEAR IMAGE WHICH SEEMS TO BE UPHOLDED IN ALL THE MEDIUMS. PARTICIPANT 2: THE MEDIA PACKAGE SEEMS TO REPRESENT THE ARTIST WELL PARTICIPANT 3: YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT THE ARTIST IS ABOUT BY SOLELY LOOKING AT THE CDDIGIPAK •IS THE MAIN PRODUCT REALISTIC ENOUGH DO YOU FEEL IT COULD BE SEEN ON A REALISTIC SCALE? PARTICIPANT 1: YES, AT SOME LEVEL CONSIDERING IF YOU HAD A BETTER RECORDING CAMERA PARTICIPANT 2: NO, BECAUSE THE EXPERIENCE IS SOMETHING YOU CANT OBTAIN WITH ONE VIDEO PARTICIPANT 3: YES, IF THE SONG HAD ABIT MORE MEANING AND IF IT HAD BETTER LOCATION SCOUTERS ETC. •COULD YOU EXPECT THE DESIGNS FOR THE CDDIGIPAK ON THE SHELVES ON FOR EXAMPLE HMV? PARTICIPANT 1: YES, ACTUALLY IT IS QUITE LIKE THE STANDARD OF DESIGN I AM USED TO SEEING. PARTICIPANT 2: YES, BECAUSE GRIME ARTIST TEND TO USE THIS STYLE OF DESIGNING PARTICIPANT 3: NO, AS IT ISN’T BOLD EOUGH AND DOESN’T HAVE OVEREXAGGERATED EFFECTS HOWEVER I CAN SEE HOW THAT WOULDN’T GO IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ARTIST IMAGE AND MUSIC VIDEO.
  • 6. FEEDBACK FROM MESSAGES SENT VIA FACEBOOK I decided to create another short questionnaire as I wasn’t completely satisfied with the amount of feedback I had, I felt that the more people I asked the better it was for me. I chose to send a message to about 15 people on my friends list so that I could hopefully get at least 10 responses. I ended up getting 9 so I asked one person who I had already started a conversation with to do it therefore I now had an even 10. The message read… Hey guys, I was wondering if you guys could complete a quick 5 question questionnaire for me for my A2 media coursework it would be very much appreciated and it will only take three minutes or so. If you decide to the link and questions are followed at the bottom there YES/NO questions so you don’t need to stress 
  • 7. FEEDBACK FROM MESSAGES SENT VIA FACEBOOK… WHERE YOU INTRIGUED BY THE PACED EDITING OF THE MUSIC VIDEO? This pie chart evidently shows that people enjoyed our music video editing and felt that it was good enough to keep them intrigued. However one person YES NO believed it wasn’t good enough to take there attention this may mean that we could add in some more effects or possibly sound effects to bring back the audiences attention. DID YOU FIND YOURSELF FEELING LIKE THE VIDEO HAD LOST YOUR ATTENSION AT ANY POINT? This conformed that although our audience was intrigued by the fast pace editing most lost focus at some point in the video and those who didn’t felt it was good enough knowing that it was created by media students and not professional media YES producers but upcoming ones. NO
  • 8. FEEDBACK FROM MESSAGES SENT VIA FACEBOOK… DO YOU THINK THAT IT IS A SUCCESS PORTRAYAL OF THE ARTIST? More people believed that it was an unsuccessful portrayal of the artist some comments have revealed YES to say that they feel there wasn’t enough shots in NO different location to let the audience identify with his area. WOULD YOU BE INTRESTED TO SEE ANOTHER MUSIC VIDEO BY ME AND MY GROUP IF WE TRIED LEARNING FROM OUR CRITICISM? All of the 10 people we asked were hoping us the best for the future and would be more than happy to see another production created by us this is a really positive thing to know and motivates me to believing YES I could possibly pursue this idea of becoming a media NO producer.
  • 9. FEEDBACK FROM MESSAGES SENT VIA FACEBOOK… DO YOU THINK THE VIDEO CAPTURES THE GRIME GENRE WELL? A majority of the people believed it captured the grime genre well this is good too know that the research does pay off and if we didn’t plan this our audience wouldn’t be able to identify the genre. YES However it should be that all say that we have NO captured it well meaning that there is no boundary for the amount of research done therefore in the future we should focus more on the pre production stage. DATA SHOWING HOW PEOPLE DISCOVERED OUR VIDEO It was evident that our viewers discovered our main product and watch it on their phones. We also learnt that embedding it on our facebook pages as well as telling the artist to do so was the right choice in terms of getting people to watch it.
  • 10. It is a huge achievement to know that our video was watched in the united states as this is where major record labels are based and they have people continuously watching over youtube to try and scout artist that they have an interest in signing. This proves that we targeted the age group we wanted to target as well as targeting a more elder age group in males but a slightly younger age range within females.
  • 11. This explains that all media consumers can become media producers however the amount of success that they will achieve is only dependent on how popular they are. As we have made a music video people will watch it but the amount of people will decrease daily as we are not official media producers because we do not have that recognition but just the facilities. After acknowledging that we had some elderly men and women viewing our main product we knew that now our feedback would be more broad even though we are targeting the youth there is no harm in elder people liking this type of genre maybe they went through the same struggles and can relate its possible.
  • 12. WHAT I HAVE LEARNT FROM MY AUDIENCE FEEDBACK The audience feedback was very critical for us as it gave us the chance to realise if our music video and other ancillary text were a success. I chose to ask other A2 Media students those who both liked and disliked grime genre music so that I would have a honest opinion on the editing and then on the overall outlook of my main product. As I was in the library I would see people who I didn’t know and ask them if they did media and if so could they comment on my music video by typing in there comment on a word document which I had open on a computer therefore all the comments would be anonymous so people would be restricted in not being honest. I also created a focus group that fitted the description of my target audience perfectly and had them fill out a little questionnaire I had made with five primary questions on it with definitions of terminology used in the questions, this gave me a strong sense of feedback. I also placed my music video link on facebook the issue with this is that it is a social networking site therefore sometimes some people don’t take it seriously on the other hand the like’ button available on facebook seemed to be beneficial in terms of having people simply say they liked it without having to comment but the downfall is that I don’t know the reasons why they liked it. But overall the attempts to attain feedback seemed to go accordingly as I was able to gain a positive vibe from people. Overall I believe gathering the data from talking to people first hand and getting them to fill out quick questionnaire worked much more successful then putting it on a social networking site like facebook because friends can feel to take it as a joke and laughing it off therefore not giving accurate feedback. Example of how people take things as a joke as it is a social networking site.
  • 13. POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS BASED ON FEEDBACK The audience feedback has shown us were could have made improvements, these are vital to take into account as we are trying to please our target audience with the visuals, therefore our main purpose is to acknowledge the fact if our viewers were gratified or not. One of the three in my focus group said that they could imagine seeing our product on a realistic scale as they didn’t believe we had enough experience to improve all our faults which is true as this is our first video. Another one of three when asked if they could see our ancillary task designs on the shelves at for example HMV they replied no because they felt the design wasn’t over exaggerated enough to grasp their attention and for them to notice it on a shelf as it needs to use more colour despite the fact that the artist is meant to be a ‘street artist’. I took this in to account and realise what the participant meant that because the artist Is obviously hoping to get signed it should reflect a more ambitious poster it might be slightly artificial and posed however it represents the artist dream and or it should represent the song more, because you can still be dramatic by using dull colours.
