Media evaluation Alex Frost
1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Our media product used conventions of real media products in a number of ways. The first is that our product sets the scene for the movie by introducing the main character and the location of our film, in the opening the product sets the scene for the rest of our product, this is what you would find in most films.
1.In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (continued) One aspect of our film was inspired by the thriller movie sin city. Sin city is mainly in black and white. We decided that black and white would work well for the ‘flash forward’ because it gave a film noir effect, this symbolised that this is not normal scene. We also used mise-en-scene. Mise-en-scene was utilized in the setting of the film and the expression given by the our actress. Clip Of Flash Forward Scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0cVFwbqZ50Start: 0:12 Finish 0:25
Mise-en-scene was evident in our characters costume and our location, the location was abandoned which suggests isolation , while our characters costume was what you would expect to see a teenage girl to wear, if you put them both together you get a teenage girl who is isolated in the country which is a classic convention for a thriller. Clip of our stereotypical teenage girl costume: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0cVFwbqZ50 Freeze frame on : 1:03
2.How does your media product represent particular social groups? In our media product we represented one social group in detail. This social group was simply the stereotypical teenage girl. We managed to represent this social group in the type of cloths she was wearing and in her behaviour towards her parents examples of this in our product is that our character shows a reluctance to get out of bed, this suggest that she is lazy which is a classic teenage stereotype, her room was also messy which is another stereotype. We also managed to suggest her being quite a lonely country girl, this was mainly shown by the filming location and her lack of contact with other people in our opening sequence, also while walking her body language was quite defensive this continued to help suggesting that she was teenage girl and likes to keep herself to herself.
3.What kind of media institution might distribute your media product? I believe that a smaller company that was maybe interested in British talent , in both Actors and directors etc. Dimension film have done horror movies in the past and they have been quite successful an example of this is the ‘Scream’ series. Apart from Dimension film i also believe that a independent film company would also suit showing our film as well because it was low budget and shows British talent. We would be hoping to get this filmed aired at film festivals as we have not had the budget for lots of advertising and it is more dicerning. We would be hoping to get it realised on DVD and BlUE-RAY, DVD because it is the basic format for films to be realised on, and BLUE-RAY because it is the best thing at this point in time. Also if we advertise it on the internet we ...
3.What kind of media institution might distribute your media product? Would be advertising it to our target audience, which is teenagers, and through research we have found out that teenage girls prefer horror movies to teenage boys, as most teenagers regularly use the internet, and since i movie is aimed at the teenage generation advertising on the internet would increase awareness for our film.
4. Who would be the audience for your media product? I beleive that our target audiences age would be about 15-25 of both gender, I believe this because the film is about a young person, and people of a similar age will understand what she is going through. I also believe that the social class of our target audience would be top level lower class, this is because our target audience will be at collage or university or maybe still at school, and people like this would not have jobs that play well if any jobs as well because they are still learning. Our target audience could also be classified as emulator achievers (successful people that try to acquire brand name cloths), this is because the age of our target audience classically like to buy brand name cloths that make them feel good, and this would be what the majority of their money would go on.
5. How do you attract/address your audience? I feel that in our media product we managed to address our audience from the start, the tension building in the beginning of our thriller opening is utilized in the way we put in in black and what with no sounds, and odd flashed. This gave an affect of where you almost have no idea what is going on and the non-digetic sounds builds up tension. This would address our target audience by posing question of who are these two character? Why is she being chased? This would hopefully hook them to the move and keep them interested till the very end. Also with a teenage main character we managed t address are target audience by making the characters feeling relevant to their own.
6.What have you learnt from technologies from the process of constructing this product? While constructing our media product I have learnt a few things from technologies. One of the key things that I have learnt is that technologies can be a bit temperamental and the that it is very important to be careful while constructing any media product, saving regularly and keeping backups is crucial. I have also learnt how to design and then incorporate our own digetic sounds into our work, I learnt this while we made our own short radio show to go over one of the scenes in out opening sequence.
Skills that I have also attained are how to use the camera for a variety of different shot types and utilize the different modes the camera as to other like night vision mode. On the Apple macs I have both learnt to capture all of our footage and edit it to make a film on Final Cut Express.
7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? I feel that since the preliminary task I have learnt a few important things. Most of all I have learnt that it is very important to get a number of different shots for each scene, because there might be a little thing wrong with one of the scenes without us realising so having multiple shots to go back on left us with us a good variety of choices for the final edit as well as making it more interesting for the viewer. The importance of doing enough planning for the production was vital, we could have planned a little bit better, this was a result of time management. Since the preliminary task I have also learnt a lot about the basics of filming an example for this is the 180 degree rule, aswell as all of the basic shot types for example a close medium shot.
