SciChallenge is a European-wide contest for young people, who are excited about NATURAL SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING or MATHEMATICS #SciChallenge2017
2. The world population is increasing every second
and because of that, some countries face the
challenge of providing food for its inhabitants.
Genetically modified (GM) food production
has been adopted, as an option for increasing
food production.
Despite the fact that the production of GM
food is quicker, some of them grow in
hostile environments.
GM food has a big impact on human
health and some people question
the safety of consuming GM foods.
3. Genetically modified food
You don’t have to look hard to find GM food
in the supermarket. More than 85 percent of
the corn and soy grown in the US comes from
seeds whose DNA has been altered and
those 2 crops play an essential role in
countless processed foods- from soda to
salad dressing to bread.
4. What impact do GM foods have on our health?
But no one really knows the answer to this
question. GM food have been on the market
since 1994, and research on their long-term
effects on humans is scarce. To date most of
the studies have been done on animals.
Some of these studies link GM foods to:
• Altered metabolism
• Inflammation
• Liver or kidney malfunction
• Reduced fertility
5. In addition, allergy sufferers worry that, as
genes are transferred between plants,
allergenic proteins (from, say, peanuts or
wheat) will pop up in unexpected places
(like soy or sugar).
Richard Goodman says that seed
companies run many tests to prevent
that kind of mistake from happening. But
still, inserting new genes into a seed’s
genome is always a gamble because
scientists can’t predict all the
consequences.
9. Effects of GMOs
DNA in GMO plants and
animals contaminate
forever and cannot be
reversed once they’re
introduced into the
natural world. GMO
production has caused a
decline in the population
of many beneficial
plants, animals &
insects, creating a
dangerously unbalanced
ecosystem.
10. 70% premature death in lab rats
A recent study in France
(one of the only
comprehensive studies
on GMOs and
mammals) proved that
lab rats exposed to
GMO, had increased
rates of cancer
premature death,
cancer and liver faliure.
To date, there has been
no long term study on
the effects of GMOs on
humans.
11. How to avoid GM foods
•Buy food labeled 100% organic.
•Buy 100% grass-fed meat.
•Seek products that are specifically labeled
as non GMO or GMO-free.
•Shop locally.
•Buy whole foods.
•Grow your own food.
