Complex Event Processing: a method of tracking and analyzing event
streams to identify meaningful patterns (such as opportunities or threats)
and respond to them as quickly as possible.

ESPER PITFALLS
•  EPL has a steep learning curve
•  has at least two dialects
•  includes quite a few different built-in “views”, functions etc.
•  documentation is a reference book plus a set of samples rather than a
tutorial
•  Unit-testing of actors gets more complicated (due to different groups of
threads)
An impact on development, and which is even more important, on maintenance.

THE ESCAPE
Why wouldn’t just use the Akka framework?
•  out-of-box event handling
•  very cheap state: no need to think about thread synchronization etc.
•  timers to introduce notation of time
Indeed this is more verbose, but we get simplicity in lieu.
P. S. Erlang experts often choose a similar approach for tasks like being
described above – applying of the actor model.

Recommendations for Building Machine Learning Software: Building a real system that uses machine learning can be a difficult both in terms of the algorithmic and engineering challenges involved. In this talk, I will focus on the engineering side and discuss some of the practical lessons we’ve learned from years of developing the machine learning systems that power Netflix. In this talk, we introduce the extensions of Spark Streaming to support (1) SQL-based query processing and (2) elastic-seamless resource allocation. First, we explain the methods of supporting window queries and query chains. As we know, last year, Grace Huang and Jerry Shao introduced the concept of “StreamSQL” that can process streaming data with SQL-like queries by adapting SparkSQL to Spark Streaming. However, we made advances in supporting complex event processing (CEP) based on their efforts. In detail, we implemented the sliding window concept to support a time-based streaming data processing at the SQL level. Here, to reduce the aggregation time of large windows, we generate an efficient query plan that computes the partial results by evaluating only the data entering or leaving the window and then gets the current result by merging the previous one and the partial ones. Next, to support query chains, we made the result of a query over streaming data be a table by adding the “insert into” query. That is, it allows us to apply stream queries to the results of other ones. Second, we explain the methods of allocating resources to streaming applications dynamically, which enable the applications to meet a given deadline. As the rate of incoming events varies over time, resources allocated to applications need to be adjusted for high resource utilization. However, the current Spark's resource allocation features are not suitable for streaming applications. That is, the resources allocated will not be freed when new data are arriving continuously to the streaming applications even though the quantity of the new ones is very small. In order to resolve the problem, we consider their resource utilization. If the utilization is low, we choose victim nodes to be killed. Then, we do not feed new data into the victims to prevent a useless recovery issuing when they are killed. Accordingly, we can scale-in/-out the resources seamlessly.

This session discusses the technical concepts of stream processing / streaming analytics and how it is related to big data, mobile, cloud and internet of things. Different use cases such as predictive fault management or fraud detection are used to show and compare alternative frameworks and products for stream processing and streaming analytics. The focus of the session lies on comparing - different open source frameworks such as Apache Apex, Apache Flink or Apache Spark Streaming - engines from software vendors such as IBM InfoSphere Streams, TIBCO StreamBase - cloud offerings such as AWS Kinesis. - real time streaming UIs such as Striim, Zoomdata or TIBCO Live Datamart. Live demos will give the audience a good feeling about how to use these frameworks and tools. The session will also discuss how stream processing is related to Apache Hadoop frameworks (such as MapReduce, Hive, Pig or Impala) and machine learning (such as R, Spark ML or H2O.ai).

Advanced time series analysis (TSA) requires very special data preparation procedures to convert raw data into useful and compatible formats. In this presentation you will see some typical processing patterns for time series based research, from simple statistics to reconstruction of correlation networks. The first case is relevant for anomaly detection and to protect safety. Reconstruction of graphs from time series data is a very useful technique to better understand complex systems like supply chains, material flows in factories, information flows within organizations, and especially in medical research. With this motivation we will look at typical data aggregation patterns. We investigate how to apply analysis algorithms in the cloud. Finally we discuss a simple reference architecture for TSA on top of the Confluent Platform or Confluent cloud.

A key feature when monitoring and debugging any Cloud infrastructure is to provide the ability to trace, track, and collate all the individual, discrete steps that compose an event. A typical resource action in OpenStack is often a combination of smaller tasks -- which given the distributed nature of OpenStack -- can fail at unpredictable points in the workflow. By collecting the appropriate events, operators can view all events within Ceilometer, filter on a failed action and trace back the history of related events to spot anomalies or errors. In this talk, we provide an overview of the recent enhancements made in Ceilometer to support the collection of event notifications from OpenStack services. We will describe: how events are processed, transformed and stored in Ceilometer; how you can derive metrics from events; and how it’s possible to track the events of a resource and analyse where errors occur.
