PERFORMANCE
ARTS
a time-based art form that typically features a live
presentation to an audience or to onlookers (as on a
street) and draws on such arts as acting, poetry,
music, dance, and painting. It is generally an event
rather than an artifact, by nature ephemeral, though
it is often recorded on video and by means of still
photography.
PERFORMANCE
ARTS
is ascribed to art that involves the body of the artist
or other collaborators in live or recorded action.
There is often no other physical output besides the
documentation of the action that took place. This
non-traditional form of art allowed artists to work with
the experience of live-ness and impermanence in
their work.
4
Many productions in the performing arts take place in some type of theater. Most theaters consist of an
elevated stage and a space for a live audience, and the most common art forms that occur there are
acting and music. Theatrical stage productions involve the reenactment of written stories taken from
literary works or independent creations. Actors may communicate performances with spoken words, a
combination of singing and spoken words, or silent gestures. The Cultural Center of the Philippines is
considered to be the premiere place for performing arts. It has local and international world-class guest
artists.

4 BASIC ELEMENTS OF
PERFORMANCE ARTS
Performing arts may include dance, music, opera, theatre and musical theatre,
magic, illusion, mime, spoken word, puppetry, circus arts, performance art,
recitation and public speaking. There is also a specialized form of fine art, in
which the artists perform their work live to an audience. Let’s look at different
types of performing arts.
7
EXAMPLE OF PERFORMANCE
ARTS
Poetry, from the Greek “poiesis”—meaning a "making", seen also in such
terms as "hemopoiesis"; more narrowly, the making of poetry, is a form of
literary art which uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language—such
as phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre—to evoke meanings in
addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning.

We’ve got dances for almost every occasion from religious festivals and harvest
celebrations to war preparations and elaborate courtship rituals. Filipino dances
are also particularly challenging not just because of the elaborate choreography
but also because of the creative use of native materials such as bamboo and
coconut shells or other items like glasses and candles. All types of dance,
whether they comes in the forms of ballet, tap, jazz, folk dance, or hip hop, are
considered to be performing arts.
17

FESTIVAL DANCE
Festival dances are cultural dances performed to the strong beats of percussion
instruments by a community of people sharing the same culture usually done in honor of
a Patron Saint or in thanksgiving of a bountiful harvest. Festival dances may be religious
or secular in nature. But the best thing about festivals is that they add to the merry-
making and festivities where they are celebrated, the reason why they are called festival
dances after all. Festival dances draw the people's culture by portraying the people's
ways of life through movements, costumes and implements inherent to their place of
origin.

26

27
Magic and circus acts are considered to be a form of performance art.
They are typically conducted before a live audience and may use special
effects that blur the line between perceived and actual reality. Props and
elaborate costumes are usually used in these acts to add to the awe and
wonder of the performance's entertainment value.
28
MAGIC AND CIRCUS
ACT
MAGIC AND CIRCUS ACT
Performance art always involves the body of the artist or other people the artist
has commissioned to help with producing the piece. It can take place live, in
public, or be a recorded experience that took place in a private setting or closed
gallery. Often, performance art involves other mediums and objects, but the main
focus is the action that takes place by the performer. Let’s look at different types
of performance art.
30
DIFFERENT TYPES OF
PERFORMANCE ART
The category “action” is one of the first types of modern performance art. The name
aimed to set this kind of art apart from traditional art forms as well as distinguish it
from the theater, plays, or music performances. It also shows how artists thought of
the work they produced as this term was used, for example, by action painters in
the 1950s to highlight the meeting of the painter with the painting.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF PERFORMANCE ART
ACTION
31
Body art placed the body of the performer at the center of the art piece. The body
became the medium, subject, and surface where the artwork took place. This put
an emphasis on first-person experience and brought the artist even more to the
center of the work created. The political persona came more into focus post-
1960s as the social atmosphere was changing and taboos around nudity were
being challenged by artists.
32
DIFFERENT TYPES OF PERFORMANCE ART
BODY
ART
“Happenings” became a famous type of performance art during the 1960s. It
centered around the involvement of the audience and for the first time brought
improvisation into the act of performance. The idea that anything could happen
during these performances and that what took place might never be repeated
exactly again was characteristic of these events.
33
DIFFERENT TYPES OF PERFORMANCE ART
HAPPENINGS
Most of the above-mentioned movements were absorbed as characteristics of
contemporary performance art, but Endurance art became such a famous sub-section of
performance art that it earned its own name that is still being used today. Endurance
performance involves the artist or performer putting their body under strain or pain to
communicate the message of the work. The importance of endurance in making
performance art the art form it is today is evident in the kinds of themes addressed by
performance artists during the post-war era.
34
DIFFERENT TYPES OF PERFORMANCE ART
ENDURANCE
Ritual means to perform a specific set of actions in a way prescribed by religion,
group, or institution. However, ritual is often a very important part of performance
artworks. In this instance, the artist is the one deciding which actions will be
performed, how they will be performed and how they will be repeated to create the
feeling of ritual or ceremony.
35
DIFFERENT TYPES OF PERFORMANCE ART
RITUAL
Performance artists that practiced during the 1950s, 1960s, and
1970s were pioneers in this medium that was never used so
seriously before. There was so much to discover and explore, as
examples of performance art were few.
