MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk
about and explore mental health in multiple ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental
health" within your own cultural communities?
in the peruvian culture , we do not talk about. it is a taboo
Rarely talked about. When addressed, people are called crazy or weak. Told to get over
it.
Same in my experience as an AA woman @marcia
In the African American culture we are just beginning to talk about it but there is still a
great deal of sigma
It has gotten better in my Black community however, there are still some who view it as
a taboo and believe to keep issues within the family or to speak to a Church official

How does stigma feel?
#Movies4MentalHealth
Feels like an outcast
Limiting
The part that she said when her mother was talking about dirty laundry being aired out,
here's what I learned: there's only one way to get rid of dirty laundry. ...you clean it.
Yes, to clean it - I love that Ebony!
22. #Movies4MentalHealth
What makes it difficult
to reach out for help?
#Movies4MentalHealth
Feeling judged
Judgement
Not knowing where to go
Being ridiculed, called crazy, and like the film ‘keep it in the family’
Resources, transportation
Not understanding
Feeling like you are week and need to just ‘deal with it”
I use to be afraid of being judged A lot of people would tell me they don't want
to be around people who are "negative" just because they just want to talk or air
out their dirty laundry.
Or saying it is what it is. I can't stand that saying.
Viewing Counselors as "Shrinks"
Me either. Its dissmissive.

Deep! On so many levels
"When they look into our eyes, they see slot machines" that part got me
because of how true it is in today's society.
Snaps! I love this film.
Sad for the person.
I loved the imagery in the beginning with the bare skin and hair
It felt sad but beautiful
Music was somber which also led to sadness.
Yes and mentioned that he almost took his life. So disturbing how the
affect of marginalization can cause that.
That quote also reminded me of something else I learned...on TikTok: you
don't abandon the people you love. you abandon the people you use.
27. #Movies4MentalHealth
What are some practices
that help support
your wellness?
#Movies4MentalHealth
Reading my old diary entries from childhood
My family support and prayer group
Baking
Relax
I love volleyball. I play too
Writing
Zoom with family, prayer, church
Reading, positive affirmations, self talk
Self talk is precious!
I look at Disney+ whenever I feel bothered. I would watch all of the older shows from
my childhood to remind me of the good I have in my life right now.
I agree Ebony Disney is a go to for me too lol
I started writing again, it helps me release whatever I'm feeling, it calms me. Reading
as well.
Yes, prayer, church, and talking to friends. I've been watching Sanford & Son, that
makes me laugh.

#Movies4MentalHealth
Yo this is literally how i’ve felt reading my old diary entries omg!
I love that she says she accepted everything. That is one of the most
powerful things we can do as humans. Accepting the person that we are
and loving the person we were.
" you are not alone" took me years to realize that I was not
I felt it in my spirit
It was powerful
It took courage
Just made me think of inner child healing
She learned to love herself
Her smiling was powerful
The sound of the water
My late daughter popped into my heart, i lost while 4 months pregnant
Loved her hair blowing in the wind
33. #Movies4MentalHealth
How can we support
ourselves and others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
Yes, these films are teachable.
Sharing what's really going on inside of us
I talk to people who feel as if they don't have anyone to turn to.
Letting people know there is help available. Having more public service
announcements and more movies concerning mental illness and tools
on how to handle mental illness.
Ive been challenging myself to share how im really feeling more often
when people ask. Instead if just saying “im good”.
You never judge a book by it cover without learning about the story.
support people on their healing journey
if they want to be help
You have to be selfish-less to extend help to others and have community
concern.
Yes @ Chaun. I ask myself who wants to hear my misery. I HATE when
people say you're not the only one with problems.
People want you to listen not to fix it
I have a bad habit of doing that because I personally don't like to see
people in pain and lost if I know how to help
@janice me too. Its so dismissive. Makes you feel weAk or too much.
A lot of people won't know what they want. And that's okay. Most time,
what you want is to just let it out
