HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language and is the predominant markup language used for building web pages. Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1990 using HTML as its publishing language. HTML has gone through several versions starting with version 1 in 1993 to the current version, HTML5, which was published as a working draft in 2008 with the aims of improving support for multimedia while maintaining human and machine readability.
