2. Who is Loki?
- A Character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe adopted
from Norse Mythology
- Plays a role in Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World
and will make appearances in the Avengers: Infinity War
and most likely Thor: Ragnarok
- The God of Mischief
- Son of Laufey: King of the Frost Giants
- Adopted son of Odin: The Asgardian King
3. Childhood
Was born to the Frost Giant King, but was abandoned because he was small and weak
Adopted by the Asgardian King Odin after being abandoned by his family
Was brought up believing he was their biological son (didn’t know that he was adopted)
Grew up in the shadow of his older adopted brother Thor, who was heir to the throne
Felt as though his adopted father, Odin, loved Thor more than him
Was nicknamed the ‘God of Mischief’
Jealous and envious of Thor
"Your birthright was to die as a child! If I had not
taken you in, you would not be here now to hate
me." - King Odin
Thor: Why have you done this?
Loki: To prove to Father that I am a worthy son! When he
wakes, I will have saved his life, I will have destroyed that
race of monsters, and I will be true heir to the throne!
4. Childhood
You know, it all makes sense now, why you favored
Thor all these years, because no matter how much you
claim to love me, you could never have a Frost Giant
sitting on the throne of Asgard! - Loki to Odin
5. Why is he interesting?
Can empathise with his character as his actions are based on
normal human emotions and desires (jealousy, resentment,
eagerness to please, abandonment)
He is sometimes portrayed as the anti-hero, as opposed to a
villain
He is very manipulative and deceptive, meaning it is hard to
know what his true motives are
6. The good side of loki
Works with Thor to save Jane Foster
Saves Thor’s life
Cares deeply for his mother and is incredibly angry and upset after hearing of her death
“I will tell father you died with honour” - Thor
“I didn’t do it for him” - Loki
I never wanted the throne. I only ever
wanted to be your equal - Loki to Thor
7. Loki the villain
Is willing to do anything for power, forms allies with The Other (Allies with Thanos) to retrieve
the tesseract, a source of unlimited energy. In this case power over humans.
Isn’t really good or evil, he does whatever he wants (whatever benefits him), doesn’t follow
the rules
Very selfish
"I was a king! The rightful king of Asgard. Betrayed." - Loki
"Your ambition is little, born of childish need. We look beyond
the Earth to greater worlds the Tesseract will unveil." - The
Other
“Through your arrogance and stupidity, you've
opened these peaceful realms and innocent
lives to the horror and desolation of war!” -
Odin
“Destroy Everything” - Loki
8. What is his philosophy? What does he value?
Believed that he was the rightful heir to the Asgardian throne leading to him making
enemies and seeking revenge
He values power, and will do anything to get it. This stems from his resentment of Thor,
and his future as King of Asgard
He values his father’s and brother’s respect because he always wanted to prove himself
(as a true King)
“All because Loki desires a
throne” - Odin
“It is my birthright” - Loki
9. How does Loki treat people?
- Is a Master Manipulator as seen in the Avengers movie
- Enjoys toying with people’s emotions
- Often jokes during serious situations, which annoys / angers most people
10. Do we agree with his philosophy?
We do not agree with his
philosophy. However, we do
understand his reasoning as his
childhood is easy to relate to. We
feel sympathy for his character,
but that does not excuse his
actions.
