Training received in Ocean Teacher-IOC-UNESCO: Development
and Management of e-Repositories, Oostende, Belgium, 8-12 April
2013. It allowed to get the AgriOcean server installed in the
Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries – MGAP. It will be a
great opportunity for the different dependencies of the MGAP, to
have an institutional repository.
Introduction
Professional associations of librarians and documentation are
key elements in the advancement of the profession. Members
of an association have common interests, share experiences
and support each other, focusing on cooperation and
technical assistance. The increasing development of new
technologies of information and communication, allow the
immediacy of ideas and information resources exchange that
each member of the network provides to the entire group
through different media. Thereby, projects emerge from
members of the association and also in cooperation with
international organizations of which the whole group benefits.
The International Association & Marine Science Libraries &
Information Centres (IAMSLIC) emerged in 1975 at the first
meeting of marine science librarians on the east coast of the
USA and Canada.
The attendees agreed that meetings would be held annually.
In the time between meetings, work in cooperation projects
and membership enlargement should be carried out. In 1991,
the association changed its name to International Association
of Aquatic & Marine Science Libraries & Information Centres,
(although remaining the same acronym), in order to serve
members who work in freshwater information organizations.
The IAMSLIC grew and expanded over time. It currently has
six regional groups: AFRIAMSLIC, Cyamus, EURASLIC,
Pacific Islands (PIRG), SAIL and the Latin American Regional
Group (GL).

Interview with Dr. Omar Defeo
Aída Sogaray
In 2004, when I came to the Library of the Dinara, you expressed your discontent regarding this
information unit. You told me the library had a poor outdated collection; and you added: "I am sure you
agree with me: this is not a library".
Your opinion about my new workplace distressed me; but, at the same time it moved me to start a task of
reorganization and concrete actions to strengthen the Library. Ten years have passed since then. I would
like to have your opinion now.
Dr. Omar Defeo
“Today the library is something precious to DINARA. Nowadays, people can work comfortably at the
library and also searching has become fluid through proper planning and because of the services the
library staff provides. In addition, there have been a number of links with other institutions and resources
online have become flexible and varied. Links to the IAMSLIC, the ANII and TIMBO have made
substantial progress in the development of the library. In addition, the support you provide in material
searching is very good. Library staff always shows a good disposition, efficient service and goodwill”.
Abstract
The Documentation Centre and the Library of the National Direction of Aquatic Resources (Dinara) has integrated the International Association of Aquatic and Marine
Science Libraries and Information Centres (IAMSLIC) since September 2004, the same year I came to the DINARA to take charge of its Library. The Association
facilitates cooperation among its members and services visibility and integration with partners of marine, fisheries and aquaculture areas. It provides exchange of
resources through free access repositories, with material produced by researchers, access to colective catalogs and mailing lists: IAMSLIC International and Latin group.
It enables technical assistance at national, regional and international levels, as well as exchange of experiences. Integrating IAMSLIC represented a breakthrough in
terms of the services provided by the Library, positioning and enhancing of the librarian profession.
Interview with Dr. Omar Defeo, library user review: Vision of DINARA library before and after integrating IAMSLIC.
Organization
The DINARA library (Uruguay), joined the IAMSLIC in 2004
by suggestion of INIDEP librarians (Argentina).
Benefits obtained by integrating the IAMSLIC:
• Online access to IAMSLIC membership directory.
• Online access to union Serials Catalog.
• Online access to Z39.50 Catalog (Books).
• Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery.
• Join the following lists: IAMSLIC, IAMSLIC Biblio Latino,
forum for exchange and dissemination of information on
marine and aquatic sciences and related disciplines.
• Support for projects and travel grants to the Annual
Conferences.
• Annual Conferences Registration with membership fees.
• Being elected to become part of IAMSLIC committees.
• PUBLICATIONS: - Aquatic Commons Repository -
Conference Proceedings - IAMSLIC Issues / IAMSLIC Blog
August 2008: DINARA Library is incorporated into the Ocean
Docs repository on the initiative of the IOC (Intergovernmental
Oceanographic Commission) of UNESCO.
Authors of Scientific and Technical documents from DINARA
are pleased to be able to access to download statistics and
their papers. The importance of having a repository with clear
policies and free access guaranteed to marine scientific
information is highlighted.
Review by Laura Paesch, MSc (Library most habitual reader)
“Since you're in IAMSLIC it has been wonderful. You get all articles I ask you, if I do not find them at the
‘Timbo’ website I know that you have this wonderful resource and very often in just a few minutes you
give me the material requested. Before we were not used in Dinara to making use of the library because
there was not much material, either in print or digital for the publications, to solve this, we asked a faculty
colleague or resorted to the author. Formerly, we had a card to request items by post and this depended
on the willingness of the author to submit the paper. Now we have email, but because of copyrights,
sometimes the author cannot send the original article. It has been very helpful to me that you could get
me items through IAMSLIC for my research and graduate studies.”
Final Considerations
It changed the image of the Library since it has been a member of IAMSLIC.
Satisfied users.
Served their information needs.
Positive results.
The institutional support provided by IAMSLIC membership is essential to the objectives of both the
association and the Library.
It is also relevant the possibility of continuing education to stay up to date and provide the best service to
our researchers.
This allows for professional growth, ranks the profession of librarian high and contributes to the
development of the productive sector of Uruguay.
