This presentation will help you to replace the nervous anxiety that comes over a person before an interview with the understanding that you have a plan of action for the interview.
Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition. This came in especially handy as I was in transition again in 2017. Basically, I just used the tips that I have shared with others and was out of work a total of ZERO days. Yes, I got a job offer the day after my last day at my previous job. Let me show you how I did it so you too can have a quicker landing than you would have had without my tips.
Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences. Plus, I told myself that once I figured this out I would share it with others so that they too could navigate the world of unemployment. In these chapters, I show you how I did it so that you will have the confidence to make it through the process. I hope that this presentation helps you to get your next great job.

5. The next group of slides will discuss things that I believe
will help you to replace interview nerves with interview
confidence
I will tell you the tip or idea and let you know why I like
it to help you in dealing with the process.
Remember, I am by no means a professional and never
claim to be. I am just giving you things as I see them to
help you to see through the ‘fog’ and get ahead in your
career.
I hope my ideas help you out and help me to end
unemployment one person at a time.
6. Think about it for a minute. The interview
process is not a one way street. It is meant
to be interactive. Once the interview is
scheduled, ask yourself how you want the
conversation to go? While you should be
ready to answer questions, settle your
nerves by thinking of this as a discussion
instead of a sizing up moment or pass/fail
moment as that way you will be more apt to
b e yourself.
7. If you are having a phone interview, stand
up when you do it and walk around. This
will have you on your game more and will
have you be sharper in your responses.
Keep your notes, questions and your job
search tips in front of you as you have the
interview so that you do not forget to say or
ask something. This way you are more
controlled.
8. If you want some unfiltered comments on
company culture, please go to
Glassdoor.com. On that site, you will learn
what people on the inside think of thee
company. Check out these comments before
the interview as that will help you to
prepare. This is an example of how you can
go into the interview with unique
information and in more of a position of
strength. This can be an edge. Use it.
9. Before the interview, check out the local
business journal for your city and see if there
are articles about the company and bring them
up during the interview. These journals are not
widely read but they are read by people in the
know. Many times I have impressed people by
discussing an article from that media. It’s a
great advantage and will help you to be
remembered. Never forget you always want to
be different as that way you will be
remembered.
10. If the interview is an in person interview,
get there 10-15 minutes early and strike up
a conversation with the receptionist. Many
times the hiring manager will ask the
receptionist what he or she thinks of you
personality wise. That may enter into
whether you will fit in so make the
conversation a success as it can only help
you.
11. If you know someone working at the
company and that person helped you to get
the interview, ask the person to meet you at
the front desk when you arrive. That will
settle you down and show the people that
you will be a good fit and that you have a
connection already working there.
12. When you arrive, never assume that the
interview will start on time. Sometimes hiring
managers are purposely late an have
interruptions during the interview to see how
you will handle it. Even if this is not true and
people are just running behind, handle it
properly. Every company is very busy and
things may go differently than you expect. Be
flexible because if you are not, it could affect
whether you will move along.
13. When you are met and are on your way to
the interview room, notice the cubes and
see how they are decorated. This will tell
you if the company is very strict and tight
with their culture or more open, creative
and flexible. Take note of that and keep it in
mind for your responses.
14. Make sure that the hiring manager knows how you
can add value day one.
Make sure that you are clear regarding your skills
and how those skills match the position.
Take the job description and not how your
experience matches those items and make sure that
your bring a printout of that for you and the hiring
manager to go over as that will help you to gain an
advantage. If you have don’t have experience in any
are, note that you are excited to learn.
15. Have you been a mentor in the past? Make
sure you note it and have it in your resume.
Have you promoted diversity and other
positive change in previous jobs? Make sure
that it is known as that helps to
differentiate you.
16. Have you been involved in community type
activities as a volunteer either as part of
former company event or on your own?
This is a big advantage for you as it shows
that you are well rounded resource which
companies absolutely love. Make sure that
people know about this passion. Companies
love passionate people. Show it.
17. Again, think discussion and also think
infomercial. Show your confidence, your
enthusiasm and your excitement and how
you will hit the ground running.
No one wants someone that they have to
manage. They want self-starters and people
who are internally motivated. Never forget
that.
18. Never assume that the hiring manager has
read your resume or LinkedIn profile.
People are just too busy. Print out all of your
LinkedIn recommendations and bring them
with you. During a quiet moment, present it
to the hiring manager. This is huge and
believe me, it will be noticed.
19. Positive energy is contagious.
People want to be around positive people
and that mindset grows as you meet more
people .
Just be you but always project a positive
you.
20. When you are asked if you have questions,
ask things like, What keeps you up at night
or What issue have you have trouble
solving? When you get the response, tell the
person what you would do to improve the
situation. That adds value.
take your time when answering questions.
Short silence moments are not weakness. It
is just another way to control the
informational flow. Use it.
21. Believe in your skills and show how you are
the best person for the job with great
examples of your success and be very open
about how you have turned limitations into
strengths.
Ask for the job.
Tell how excited you would be to work for a
great company like this one.
22. After the interview, hand write thank you
notes on note cards to everyone who you
interviewed with and mail them to them.
Don’t email, use handwritten notes as they
are more personal and will get you noticed.
Own the moment. Just be you, the best you
that you can be because this is a discussion
and not a one way street.
23. I want to reiterate that I am not a professional and only
providing you with things I did that helped me out
during my own job search.
I do these presentations because the job search process
has a lot to do with attitude and outlook. That’s on you.
As I say, excuses are for losers. Be a winner and take
charge. You can do it because you have done it before I
bet.
Make sure you individualize any all of the information
provided on this or any of my presentations. My ideas
are to guide you and help you to understand concepts.
