Types of pipes
 Steel Pipes
 Galvanized Iron (GI) Pipes
 Copper Pipes
 Plastic or Polythene or PVC pipes
 Asbestos Cement (AC) Pipes
 Cast Iron (CI) Pipes
 Concrete Pipes
1. CAST IRON PIPE
These pipes are most commonly used in
water distribution system mainly because of
the following reasons.
 They are cheaper in cost
 It has high resistance to corrosion
 It is highly durable
CAST IRON PIPE
2.STEEL PIPE
Use of steel pipes in water supply system is suggested when,
pipes are subjected to very high pressure (i.e. above 7
kg/cm2)
 large diameter pipes are required
3.GALVENIZED IRON PIPE
This type of pipe is used for water supply work inside the building.
These pipes are wrought steel pipes provided with zinc coating.
They are available in light, medium and heavy grades depending on the
thickness of the metal.
Generally the medium grade pipes are used for internal plumbing in
building
4.COPPER PIPES
•These pipes are used in hot water installation.
•They have high tensile strength and can therefore have thin walls and
they can be bent easily.
•Copper pipes are sometimes coated with chromium to enhance its
appearance.
5. PLASTIC OR POLYTHENE OR PVC PIPES
These pipes are
being used
increasingly these
days for supply of
cold water in
external and
internal plumbing
work.
Dia ranges from
15 to 150 mm and
sometimes up to
350mm
TYPES OF PLASTIC PIPES
 There are 3 common types of plastic pipes are
available in market, as given below.
1. Unplasticized PVC (UPVC) or rigid pipes for use with cold
water
2. Plasticized PVC pipes which are plasticized with addition
of rubber. It has lower strength and lower working
temperature than UPVC pipes.
3. Chlorinated PVC (CPVC) pipes which can withstand
higher temperatures up to 1200 (used to carry hot water)
6. ASBESTOS CEMENT (AC) PIPES
•Asbestos, silica and cement
are converted under
pressure to a dence
homogeneoous materials
•The pipes come in lengths
of 3 meters.
•Diameter : 10cm to 130cm
•The principal defects of
these pipes are that they are
heavy and they break easily.
These pipes are cheaper
than PVC pipes.
7. CONCRETE PIPES
 Plain cement concrete pipes – small sizes (dia 0.6)
 Reinforced cement concrete pipes – large sizes (dia
1.8m to 4.5m)
 Manufacturing method (based on location)
 Cast in situ
 Precast
 Manufacturing process of R.C.C. pipes
 Cylinder type
 Centrifugal type
 Orsinary methos
 Mix used – 1:2:2 with max. agg.size as 6mm
CONCRETE PIPE
WATER METER
 These are the devices which are installed on
the pipes to measure the quantity if water
flowing at a particular point along the pipe.
 METER MAY BE OF TWOTYPE
1. Displacement type
2. Velocity type
DISPLACEMENT TYPE METER
The displacement type meter records the number of
times a container of known volume in filled up and
emptied by the flowing water. From the reading , the
volume of water can be worked out.
VELOCITY TYPE METER
The velocity meter work on the principle of velocity of
entering water. Higher the velocity of water , more will be
the discharge through meter. The meter gives reading on the
dial according to the velocity of the flow of water.
TYPES OFVELOCITY METER
1. Turbine meter
2. Venturi meter
