• Builds advanced research infrastructures and community in different areas
– National broadband network (2,000 KM of lit fiber)
– Africa Science Gateway and federated services (KENET CA, iDP, EDUROAM)
– The first NREN in Africa to have a Certification Authority (CA) accredited by EUGRIDPMA
allowing Kenyan researchers access global e-infrastructures for FREE!
• Aggregates demand for bandwidth and leased lines
– Increasing buyers power of the higher education sector
– KENET is a “platinum” customer to ALL major suppliers of leased lines –
• Aggregates Internet traffic and negotiates peering arrangements
– Attracts partners like Google and IBM
– > 13 Gb/s of International traffic as of October 2016 (70% peering traffic with CDNs in Kenya)
• Is one of the voices of research and education community in Kenya / Africa
– Vehicle for GoK / World Bank broadband funding for universities
– Attracts donor funding for higher education – PHEA, USAID, NSRC, NSF, EU, ISOC, GoK/World

permettant aux chercheurs Kenyans d'accéder GRATUITEMENT aux infrastructures électroniques mondiales!
• La demande d'agrégats pour la bande passante et les lignes louée
– Accroître le pouvoir des acheteurs du secteur de l'enseignement supérieur
– KENET est un client "platine" pour TOUS les principaux fournisseurs de lignes louées –
• Agréments de trafic Internet et négocie des accords de peering

driven advocacy
• Catalyst for transformation of education and research using ICT
– Discovers and supports research and innovation champions
– Offers up to 10 travel grants per year to faculty researchers or post-graduate students in STEM
areas
– Sponsors innovative research projects using Mini-grants of $10,000 per University faculty team (see
http://raspberry.kenet.or.ke )
• Facilitates Special Interest Groups in priority areas:

KENET Digital Certification Authority
and Identity Provider
● KENET operates a fully functional Certification Authority capable of
issuing one year Personal and Robot public key certificates (compliant
with the X.509 standard).
● Users can request for personal certificates, host certificates, renew and check
certificate revocation lists.
● Fully accredited by EUGRIDPMA – example grids accessible
– The Africa Grid Science Gateway – https://www.africa-grid.org
– EGI – European Grid Infrastructure
– SURFSara (Dutch National Grid)
• KENET is the Identity Provider of Kenyan researchers (single sign-on)
– KENET Open Data repository integrated with iDP
– Eduroam operational
• Essential for Open Science Data Platform or for collaboration

Open Data Repository
• Demand from SIG on engineering members for an Open Data
repository
– Started with mini-grant for Raspberry Pi educational / research
projects for 4 university teams (see http://raspberry.kenet.or.ke )
– Two university teams using the Raspberry Pi as part of IoT to collect
data on birds and horticulture
– They needed a data repository – data collected growing at
exponential rate
• KENET has setup an Open Access Data Repository that is now
integrated to KENET iDP (identity provider)
– Will be used by researchers publishing in Open Access Journals that
demand research is published
– Researchers without adequate storage facilities at their universities
• Problem: Institutions have Open Access Policies but NOT
research data policies – urgent solution needed.

pour une collaboration
• ° Demande de SIG sur les membres d'ingénierie pour un référentiel de
données ouvertes
– Commencé avec une mini-subvention pour les projets éducatifs / de
recherche (see http://raspberry.kenet.or.ke )
– Deux équipes universitaires utilisant le Raspberry Pi dans le cadre de IoT
pour recueillir des données sur les oiseaux et l'horticulture
– ls avaient besoin d'un dépôt de données - les données recueillies
augmentaient à un taux exponentiel
• KENET a configuré un référentiel de données Open Access qui est
maintenant intégré à KENET iDP (fournisseur d'identité)
– Sera utilisé par des chercheurs publiant dans les journaux Open Access qui
en demandent
– Chercheurs sans installations de stockage adéquates dans leurs Universités
• Problème: les Institutions ont des politiques d'accès ouvert, mais PAS
les politiques de données de recherche - une solution urgente est
nécessaire.

Conclusions?
• NRENs facilitate building national research infrastructures and promote
research collaboration
• African NRENs can provide high-speed access Open Access Data
repositories
– Provide high-speed dedicated connectivity between NRENs that host open
access repositories
– High-speed Access to HPC and Grid Infrastructure by researchers all over
Africa
• Anecdotal Evidence Suggests most universities and research institutions in
Kenya do not yet have operational institutional Research Data Policies
– Awareness and capacity building required
• Governments need to strengthen African NRENs finding the building of
high-speed national networks and research infrastructures
– A pipeline of specialized network and systems engineer required to build and
maintain research infrastructures
– KENET over the years has benefited from EU-funded SciGaiA project and
e4africa.eu project to build a technical team.

Conclusions?
• Les NREN facilitent la construction d'infrastructures nationales de
recherche et favorisent la collaboration en recherche
• Les NREN africains peuvent fournir des accès à grande vitesse, des
référentiels de données Open Access
~Fournir une connectivité dédiée à grande vitesse entre les NREN qui hébergent des référentiels à accès
ouvert
~ Accès rapide à HPC et Grid Infrastructure par les chercheurs partout en Afrique
• Preuve anecdotique : la plupart des Universités et des Instituts de
recherche au Kenya ne disposent pas encore de politiques opérationnelles
en matière de données de recherche institutionnelle
– D’où sensibilisation et renforcement des capacités requis
• Les gouvernements doivent renforcer les NREN africains pour trouver la
construction de réseaux nationaux et d'infrastructures de recherche à
grande vitesse
– Un pipeline de réseau spécialisé et un ingénieur de systèmes requis pour construire et maintenir des infrastructures de
recherche
~KENET au fil des années a bénéficié du projet SciGaiA financé par l'UE et du projet e4africa.eu pour la création d'une
équipe technique.
