INTRODUCTION
There are two types of numbers namely:
Whole / Natural Numbers
Integers
Adjex Academy 3
WHOLE NUMBERS
Natural number is another name for the Whole
number.
There are ten numbers.
There are only positive numbers
They include 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

Whole Numbers
Combination of the whole numbers make more
numbers
10 = Ten
101= One hundred and one
1000 = One thousand

 ‘0 < 5’ means zero is less than five
 ‘5 > 0’ means five is greater than zero

They are made up of
Positive whole numbers

Negative whole numbers

‘+’ Plus is the sign for addition
2 + 2 = 4

‘−’ minus is the sign to subtract
4 − 2 = 2

It means to multiply
‘×’ times is the sign to multiply
2 × 3 = 6

QUOTIENT
It means to divide
‘÷’ or ‘/’ This is the sign to divide
6 ÷ 2 = 3

THINGS TO NOTE
Subtract 8 from 9
It means 9 – 8 = 1
But
Subtract 9 from 8
It means 8 – 9 = -1
When we multiply we do so from right to left but
when we divide we do so from left to right

COMMUTATIVITY
This means two integers can be added or multiplied
either ways.
2 + 3 = 5
3 + 2 = 5
2 × 3 = 6
3 × 2 = 6
But
3 – 2 = 1
2 – 3 = -1
6 ÷ 2 = 3
2 ÷ 6 = 1⁄3

ASSOCIATIVITY
Three or more integers when added or multiplied in
either way does not affect the result.
Not possible for subtraction or division
3 + 4 + 5 = 7 + 5 = 12
5 + 3 + 4 = 8 + 4 = 12
2 × 1 × 3 = 2 × 3 = 6
3 × 1 × 2 = 3 × 2 = 6

Solve
2 + (+2) = 2 + 2 = 4
3 – (−3) = 3 + 3 = 6
4 + (−3) = 4 − 3 = 1

BODMAS is an acronym used in solving.
B = Bracket
O = Of
D = Division
M = Multiplication
A = Addition
S = Subtraction

Bodmas
(2 + 2) − 1 + 3 × 4
Using BODMAS solve Bracket first
(2 + 2) − 1 + 3 × 4 = (4) − 1 + 3 × 4
Then multiplication
= 4 − 1 + 12
Then addition
= 4 – 13
And finally subtraction
= −9
