OEMs ARE MOVING TO 3DEXPERIENCE
7
As more OEMs start new development programs with CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE, their supply chains will need to
decide upon their own 3DEXPERIENCE strategy
The 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud is the
quickest and easiest way to design
with CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE and
participate in new OEM product

IS A CLOUD DEPLOYMENT APPROPRIATE FOR YOU?
There are some reasons why a customer should not proceed with a cloud-based PLM deployment
8
Do you have any special
security needs for product IP?
The 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud meets and exceeds all cloud security requirements (see next
slide), but it does not currently meet the security needs of companies that must adhere to
ITAR regulations.
Do you have any regulatory
requirements that prevent
automatic software upgrades?
The 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud functionality is frequently updated with new capabilities. For
industries that require strictly documented development processes, this could be an issue.
This is most often an issue for Life Sciences companies complying with FDA regulations.
Do you have good network
connection speeds to the public
Internet for downloading and
uploading CAD assembly data?
When using “file-based” CAD such as CATIA V5, SOLIDWORKS, Creo, NX, etc., large CAD
assemblies will need to be downloaded from your region’s cloud server to the designer
workstation’s local cache and then eventually uploaded. If this data transfer occurs in
reasonable times via FTP, then the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud will perform well too. Note that
using CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE completely eliminates this limitation of older CAD formats.
Do you anticipate complex
integrations to other enterprise
business systems?
The 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud has an integration layer for exchanging product information with
other software systems and it is constantly improving. However, a company’s integration
needs must be carefully evaluated to ensure the needs will be met when they are anticipated
to occur in the roadmap plans.

The goal of this presentation is to help a customer determine if using the Dassault Systemes 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud is a good strategy for improving their product development processes.
An overview of the benefits of 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud approach and capabilities will be provided including providing reasons why the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud may not be appropriate. Details of the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud solution will be presented for managing design intent to deliver all of the capabilities associated with most PDM and PLM systems whether on-premises or cloud-based. However, 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud also has many advanced capabilities that are not even possible with most on-premises PLM solutions. Finally, while most companies first consider the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud to address design and engineering needs, the solution can easily scale to address how the extended enterprise participates in the product development process.
There are two main reasons for why a company considers cloud technology for PLM – reducing the total cost of ownership and achieving a quicker ROI. A cloud implementation has a cost structure that avoids nearly all of the costs associated with an on-premises implementation. A lengthy consulting project to get the software installed and setup is avoided. The costs of the hardware servers and software middleware such as the database are avoided. Finally, the most expensive cost to maintain the software and upgrade it over time is avoided.
Of course, choosing a PLM solution is not all about cost avoidance. One needs to make sure the capabilities will actually improve the company’s product development processes so an appropriate return is realized regardless of cost. On this front, the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud excels. All of the standard PDM and PLM capabilities available in an on-premises implementation are available when using the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud. In addition, advanced capabilities for manufacturing engineering and planning, systems engineering, electronics engineering, and product simulation are also available. Just as importantly, onboarding is very fast. The capabilities are available to use within hours of placing an order and companies can be productive in the new process within 1-2 weeks after getting proper training.
Beyond directly addressing product development process improvements, the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud also enables uninterrupted access whether employees are on-premises or remote. All that is needed is a sufficient connection to the public Internet. Lastly, it enables some unique collaboration opportunities with other companies that are using the 3DEXPERIENCE.
This cost avoidance approaches and path to a quicker ROI is discussed further on the ensuing slides.
The term “cloud offering” has been abused by many software providers in recent years. Many “cloud offerings” are nothing more than unique software stacks being installed on an infrastructure provider such an AWS. The 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud approach is a true multi-tenant cloud offering, which has unique cost advantages since the infrastructure costs are shared across all companies using the solution. So, rather than passing along high IT costs to the customer in the form of much higher cloud licensing costs, the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud licenses are only slightly higher per year – and much lower than the cost of IT staff maintaining and upgrading an on-premises implementation.
Dassault Systemes also offers its licenses in whatever purchase model makes most sense. Like most cloud offerings, a 3-month or yearly subscription purchase option exists. However, a company can also choose a permanent license model for the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud, which is an approach most cloud software providers no longer support. A permanent license purchase often achieves a lower cash flow over a subscription within 3-4 years of ownership.
3DEXPERIENCE has a very modular license model. This means that licenses of different types just provide incremental capabilities and are bought for only the users that need those capabilities. When a new license is purchased, it is made available in a company’s 3DEXPERIENCE cloud template with no setup required. All that is needed is for the administrator to decide which users get the new license.
Even the UI approach of 3DEXPERIENCE allows a company to save money. The solution is all web-based and supports HTML5. What this practically means for customers is the same cloud license that works on user’s workstation or laptop will also work on a mobile device. HTML5 also makes it possible for the solution to be very visual and provide very advanced capabilities in even entry-level licenses. For instance, every user will benefit from a browser-based CAD viewer,
This slide shows the process coverage of the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud. As noted previously, the solution provides all of the capabilities for managing and changing mechanical design data typical of most PDM solutions. Like most enterprise software systems the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud has very robust workflow and document management capabilities. All attribute data and file content is indexed for full-text search.
In order to get up and running quickly, an upload utility exists to add many CAD files at once. If necessary, it is even possible to exchange bill-of-material data in an XML format so integration to other business systems can occur. Finally, the system can be setup to handle very challenging multiple organization security concerns as data is created, reviewed, and released.
The 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud also provides capabilities often associated with PLM systems such as engineering change management, bill-of-material management, project and program management, and electronics design management. Your PLM plans do not need to stop at these standard PLM processes though. The solution can easily expand to include capabilities such as:
Product Requirements Management and Ideation
Systems Engineering
Product Configuration Management
Simulation Process and Data Management
NC Machining and Robotics
3D Manufacturing Process Planning
3D Work Instructions
As mentioned previously, the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud is a multi-tenant architecture. While this keeps infrastructure costs low it also enables interesting collaboration capabilities. The current 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud release allows users from tenant to be invited to access data from another tenant. An example of this could be a Customer inviting a designer from a Supplier into their tenant in order to work on a design together. The Supplier designer user will be able to leverage all of their 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud licenses even when working in the Customer’s tenant.
It will be very exciting to see how this capability evolves in the future.
The 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud manages the most common traditional “file based” CAD such as SOLIDWORKS, CATIA V5, Creo, NX, etc. However, it is the only PLM system for using CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE, which is revolutionary in its ability to increase designer productivity with the way it handles large assemblies and enables co-design. Since its release, more and more OEMs are shifting their designs to CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE. Boeing, Airbus, and Tesla are jus a few of the companies that have publicly announced their adoption of CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE. As with past technologies, when an OEM standardizes on a certain tool, its adoption tends to propagate throughout the supply chain. This will certainly occur over the next few years with CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE.
The 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud is the quickest and easiest way to design with CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE. Within a week or two a company’s designers can be productive with CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE and benefit from its higher productivity.
As compelling as the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud is, there are some reasons why it may not be a suitable for a company’s PLM needs. The first concerns security. While the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud meets and exceeds all cloud security requirements (see next slide), it does not currently meet the security needs of companies that must adhere to ITAR regulations. Companies that must comply with ITAR are most often in the Aerospace and Defense sector, but even some High-Tech companies have to comply with ITAR restrictions.
There are also some regulations that require procedural documentation to always be updated and validated whenever software upgrades occur. One of the values of the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud is that it is frequently updated with new capabilities. However, these updates will cause issued for industries that require strictly documented development processes. This is most often an issue for Life Sciences companies complying with FDA regulations.
Companies also need to carefully consider network speeds if their assemblies are very large and they do not use CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE for optimized large assembly management. When using “file-based” CAD such as CATIA V5, SOLIDWORKS, Creo, NX, etc., large CAD assemblies will need to be downloaded from your region’s cloud server to the designer workstation’s local cache and then eventually uploaded. If this data transfer occurs in reasonable times via FTP, then the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud will perform well too. The good news is that a 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud trial can easily be setup to test CAD assembly upload and download times from within your company and even during remote use.
Lastly, and integration needs with product-related data need to be carefully assessed and planned. The 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud has an integration layer for exchanging product information with other software systems and it is constantly improving. However, it does have some limitations. For most customers, complex integrations are not part of thei initial roadmap, but it will be necessary to plan this carefully with Adaptive as part of the PLM roadmap.
This slide speaks for itself. It is just a list of all the security guidelines and certifications for the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud. The takeaway here is that Dassault Systemes is confident that its security is at least as good as most company’s data centers – probably better.
Before diving into the functionality available on the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud, let’s stress some of the key points that will be reinforced:
3DEXPERIENCE Cloud manages CAD structures as well as vaulting products like SOLIDWORKS PDM Professional (EPDM), AutoDesk Vault, Teamcenter Engineering, etc., but with none of the on-premises IT costs of these other approaches.
3DEXPERIENCE Cloud has advanced bill-of-material and project management capabilities that companies need to properly manage their numerous development projects for standard and/or custom products.
3DEXPERIENCE Cloud can expand over time with advanced capabilities for requirements and configuration management, simulation process and data management, process planning, etc. Basically, its licensing is modular and can be updated in a 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud tenant within hours of executing a new order.
3DEXPERIENCE Cloud is not just for engineers ... it can be licensed for the entire organization to improve collaboration between engineering and other functional roles. Literally, the entire organization can use the entry-level 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud license to access product data and contribute to the development process.
3DEXPERIENCE Cloud is built upon the most secure, modern, and proven, PLM architecture in the industry. There are customers that are now using the latest 3DEXPERIENCE technology that started with the solution back in the 1990s.
Adaptive is much more than a software reseller ... We are PLM consultants that want to be considered your partner and not just a supplier.
The upcoming section describes 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud capabilities that are at least equal to most PDM/PLM on-premises solutions with all of the benefits of cloud technology.
Managing product data usually starts with the vaulting of CAD. 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud manages leading CAD data such as SOLIDWORKS, CATIA, NX, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, and Altium to name a few. The list is growing every 6-8 weeks so do not assume a CAD package is not supported because it is not mentioned on this slide. As we discussed before, when 3D CAD geometry is vaulted into 3DEXPERIENCE, it is accessible via a browser-based CAD viewer with markup capabilities. This can be used by every user of 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud.
3DEXPERIENCE also vaults CAD geometry in such a way that it can be easily accessed for more advanced engineering processes such as CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE electronics and systems engineering, SIMULIA 3DEXPERIENCE for multi-physics product simulation, and DELMIA 3DEXPERIENCE for manufacturing engineering. In other words, even if your company is not able to start using CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE yet, your company will be able to still benefit from how CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE enables concurrent engineering.
Lastly, the CAD product structure can also be extended and modified to define a bill-of-materials. Conversely, even if a company is not starting with CAD vaulting, a bill-of-materials can still be managed in 3DEXPERIENCE.
3DEXPERIENCE has a very flexible change process that spans raising a product or process issue, through the evaluation of a change to resolve the issue, and finally execution of implementing the change. The concepts of an Issue, Change Request, Change Order, and Change Action can be fully implemented or selectively used to accommodate 6 different out-of-the-box change processes. Most customers choose to start simple with just using a Change Action to govern an item’s modifications and release. However, as changes get more complex and it is necessary to coordinate the modification and release of many objects at once, a Change Order is often used to group multiple Change Actions. While multiple objects could be grouped under a single Change Action, this extra level of control allows for more refined reviews and approvals. The Change Request can be implemented as a front-end to evaluate the impact of a change before proceeding and Issues allow any user of 3DEXPERIENCE to indicate that a product or process problem needs to be investigated.
As with the entire 3DEXPERIENCE solution, the process can be further refined by adding data fields and electronic reviews that are unique to a particular company.
Textual data managed in 3DEXPERIENCE is fully indexed to enable simple key-word searching similar to a search engine like popular e-commerce Web sites. The solution indexes attributes and “text-based” file content from formats such as MS Office and PDF. After keying in a search string, the results are quickly returned with filters to narrow down the result set. So, instead of filling out a complex form of search criteria to get a narrow result set, users easily select the criteria that is important.
The previous section discussed the capabilities most commonly enabled to get started with 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud. However, the solution does not stop at these basic PDM/PLM capabilities. It can go much deeper and broader into how a company manages its product-related data.
A common path to expand to more advanced product definition processes is to include requirements management since missed requirements are often the reason for market failures, late deliveries, contract fines, etc. 3DEXPERIENCE vaults requirements as revisionable objects with their own review and release lifecycle. The requirements can be directly entered into the system or parsed from a specification document written in MS Word or Excel. Once a requirement is captured in 3DEXPERIENCE it can have test cases and downstream engineering data associated to it in order to provide traceability during the change process.
3DEXPERIENCE also has a front-end ideation process that can be used to informally collaborate on product ideas. As a product manage facilitates the ideation process, he or she can then use the best ideas as input to formal product requirements.
Requirements are often the front-end to a systems engineering methodology. 3DEXPERIENCE manages the process of determining the functional and logical breakdown of a complex product to satisfy the requirements. The system definition can even have a behavioral model applied to it. Many of you may recognize this as the Dymola application, which also runs natively in 3DEXPERIENCE. The last step of the systems engineering flow is to determine the physical design that fulfills the requirements and the functional and logical model.
Another aspect of requirements fulfillment is to determine the product features that satisfy the requirements and define the configuration rules of how these features can be mixed and matched for a new product to bring to market or a customized product that a customer can order. 3DEXPERIENCE supports exclusion and inclusion rules that can combine multiple features and update the available configurator options as selections are made. Since the features are associated to 3D CAD geometry, users can quickly visualize a configuration as it is built.
The feature configuration rules are also used my product designers to easily evaluation their designs against multiple configurations individually or together. This is often referred to as “design in configured context”.
As mentioned previously, 3D CAD geometry from tools other than CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE is vaulted in such a way that it can be used with more advanced CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE capabilities. For instance, the geometry from a “file-based” CAD tool can be used to create very sophisticated virtual reality scenarios. It can also be used by electronics engineers for schematic definition and wire hardness routings and flattening with CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE. In summary, the full power of the CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE portfolio is available even if the basic mechanical geometry is still created in another CAD package.
The possibility for advanced product engineering also expands to SIMULIA 3DEXPERIENCE. The managed CAD geometry can be used to create an associative FE model for product multi-physics, non-linear product simulation. Even if using “desktop” SIMULIA tools, it is possible to integrate them into 3DEXPERIENCE. A great example of this is the new electromagnet simulation capability. However, the 3DEXPERIENCE offering is being frequently updated and even the newest simulation capabilities are quickly updated to run natively in 3DEXPERIENCE.
Another option that customers have with 3DEXPERIENCE cloud is to run simulation on existing on-premises compute servers or to use its cloud computing tokens. Customers can choose whichever economic model makes the most sense.
Product simulations can be very complex to setup and execute. In order to better reuse simulations, 3DEXPERIENCE can define repeatable simulation workflows that manage the tools to execute and their data inputs and outputs. This is possible whether using SIMULIA 3DEXPERIENCE simulation applications or tools from competitors or the Abaqus desktop portfolio.
This capability also provides some interesting possibilities for using simulation to validate product requirements. For instance, the input parameters for a simulation could be derived from product requirements. Likewise, the results from a simulation could be vaulted as a way to complete a requirement’s test case.
The final key aspect of advanced product definition that 3DEXPERIENCE support is for manufacturing. Using 3DEXPERIENCE cloud, manufacturing programmers can define NC tool and robotic paths that are associated to the original 3D geometry. These paths can be fully evaluated in 3D accessing a library of common equipment geometry or by importing a company’s unique equipment models.
The other key aspect to support manufacturing is defining the process plans and work instructions. The process planning uses operations research calculations to determine the optimal sequence of steps to perform for reduced cycle times. The work instructions provide step-by-step instructions on how to execute the process. Both are defined and validated in 3D avoid collisions, interferences, and poor ergonomics.
Now that we understand how 3DEXPERIENCE addresses the full breadth and depth of product development, let’s explore how 3DEXPERIENCE makes the product development process and its data available to the entire extended enterprise.
3DEXPERIENCE licensing is very modular. Its goal is to get the entire extended enterprise participating in the product development process either as a contributor or consumer or product information. Getting started per user is very inexpensive. As a user’s needs increase, more advanced capabilities specific to their role in the organization can be added. However, just because the license is inexpensive, it does not mean it is low functionality. All users of 3DEXPERIENCE will have capabilities such as full document management and the ability to participate in workflow and project processes. Plus, we have already seen the powerful full-text search and 3D CAD viewing that all users have with the entry-level license.
Files of any type can be organized by “Workspaces” that have a Folder hierarchy. There is no limit to the number of Workspaces or Folders that can be defined. They are often based on how security needs to be applied to the files in the Workspace.
All users benefit from integrations to Microsoft Office applications and Windows Explorer as if 3DEXPERIENCE is just another folder. In addition, Microsoft Outlook emails can be vaulted into 3DEXPERIENCE as documents when it is important to save some important communications.
The most common way to tailor to release processes with company specific procedures or even ad hoc conditions is by using “Routes” to define conditions that must occur before being able to promote from one maturity state to the next. Routes can have one or more “levels” of serial tasks that must be completed by assigned individuals. This example shows a route that must be completed between the “Frozen” and “Released” states. The tasks at each level can have an “any” or “all” completion condition before reaching the next level. In this example “all” of the tasks at the first level must be completed before the second level of a single task is reached. At the completion of the Route, the document associate to the route can be automatically promoted to its next state.
Most Routes are for electronic signatures that must be approved, but they can really be used for any promotion criteria or activity that needs to be tracked. Before completing a task, all users can be required to enter their password for authentication. This is important for ISO-9000 and FDA guidelines for electronic signoff.
So far, we have been talking about how to organize documents in folders and the process to release a single document. However, when developing a product, documents are created by many different users from the earliest product concept tasks up to product launch – just organizing the documents in folders is often not enough. 3DEXPERIENCE expands the basic folder and security model with project management methodologies and a project schedule of tasks to perform across all disciplines. This means that multiple documents can be created and managed in the context of project schedule.
Importantly, the concept of segmenting access of the project data to different organizations can be done similar to Workspaces. Projects can reference other projects as sub-tasks if it is necessary to have different users contribute to the overall effort without seeing each other’s data.
As a company refines its project management methodologies, they can be institutionalized through the use of templates. Templates for various project types and needs can be defined. These templates define mandatory and optional tasks to perform along with folder hierarchies to manage content and suggested resource plans. The template even defines a standard way to capture the project budget and actual costs. If needed, the project manager can always extend the template setup to include tasks and information unique to a specific project’s needs.
Metrics dashboards are used throughout 3DEXPERIENCE to better understand the data. This slide shows some of the most widely used dashboards, but really there is no limit to how the data can be displayed graphically. Whenever a user does a search, it is possible to drill down in the search results and visualize the data graphically. For instance, if a user was curious to seeing new document creation by organization over the past 2 months, this can be easily filtered in the search results and graphically displayed – the possibilities are endless without having to export the data to Excel. Of course, if one wants to export the data, that too is possible.
All of the information discussed on the previous slides can be explored more deeply if needed. The goal of this presentation was to just provide an overview of all that is possible with 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud. As you can probably tell, the journey with 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud can start by satisfying basic needs, but then there are many paths that can be taken. Let’s now explore how Adaptive helps its customers define a 3DEXPERIENCE roadmap.
3DEXPERIENCE is all about education. Adaptive is committed to keeping its customers up-to-date on the latest capabilities and its Annual Customer Conference is a great example of this commitment. The event is free of charge and includes 2 days of informative sessions and fun activities for attendees to meet each other and share experiences with one another.
Beyond the Annual Customer Conference, Adaptive can come on-site to your company and conduct knowledge transfer sessions of particular interest to your company. A 3DEXPERIENCE roadmap is not a static plan. It is a plan that must be routinely tweaked and adjusted as business conditions change and the solution evolves.
Before ending, it is important to have access to the white papers shown on this slide. Please be sure to share these white papers with your company’s IT staff so they can review how 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud is committed to protecting your company’s valuable product IP.
