The make up of the Audience at the the LICE Workshop
Show students the rules for using mobile devices as part of your course. Using a flashing GIF Icon (top left) to indicate to students slides which you have specifically created and formatted that would be useful to take pictures of during a lesson with their mobile phone.
Flashing GIF icon to indicate to students a slide that has been specially created and formatted as a useful one slide to capture on their mobile phones. A ‘photo summary slide.’
‘Mobile Devices for Your Learning’ Induction lessons for students might cover these sorts of topics. Develop your own and proactively change the way students view their mobile phones and their behaviour of mobile phones in the classroom.
If you need a QR Code Reader for your phone, try these links.
First Menu Slide for the presentation.
Choose a number…. Ideas to explore during the presentation – StudyStack, Value of Twitter, Programmable QR Codes, NFC and ‘Smart Posters’, re-programmable NFC ‘Smart Wrist Bands’, A registration solution using NFC and Pokens. Simple eBooks solutions for tutor to create using Wattpad. Evidence Capture solutions using picture annotation apps such as PicSay and Skitch. More efficient note taking for students using Evernote. Simple Assessment, Survey and possibly Registration solutions using Google Docs and Google Forms.
Showing where NFC technology sits with regards to all the various forms of wireless technologies, including phone.
NFC (Near Field Communication) .. Has a very short distance of response, about 4cms.
NFC (Near Field Communication ) tags require power from the Source device to be able to send their information back.
Types of NFC (Near Field Communication) products and some ideas that could be used educationally.
An example of an Android app that allows you to program NFC tags.
Use QR Codes to trigger a large range of actions on your student’s mobile phones.
Use Re-Direct sites to add a lot more useful functionality to your use of QR codes.
A potential ‘Tap and Go’ Registration solution using Poken technologies.
What a Poken Time line looks like.
Using Personalised cards, provide individual support to students using the features of re-programmable QR Code sites.
Make the Classroom Environment – Mobile friendly with carefully thought out ‘Mobile Ready’ desk furniture…
Create Mobile Ready spaces on student’s desks to help promote a positive approach to using mobile devices inside your classroom. The use of Re-programmable links fixed firmly to the desk helps them to engage with active and relevant content during the lesson. The ‘place’ for them to place their mobile phones during the lesson will help give a tutor a chance of better managing the use of mobile devices during the lesson.
By combining the use of QR codes and NFC tages with re-direct sites such as p-qr, you can create high quality re-useable resources and move away from printing 30, 50 or 100 hanouts each time. In this presentation, I use an eHandout created in Google Docs. Everything is updatable and re-useable, .. It saves me time !!
Use ‘Smart Signage’ on Classroom doors. – Students would get into the habit of scanning a QR Code on the door if it is locked and there is no tutor there. They could then read messages such as “Hello Class 3B, I am late at the moment. Could you please go and do the exercise in the library”
Evidence capturing solutions using Picture Annotation apps.
Evidence capture – Using a picture annotation tool on a mobile phone. Suggest to students they could use their phone to more quickly and usefully, capture evidence of field trip, classroom and workshop activities… where appropriate. (eg: PicSay on Android or Skitch for iPhone)
eBooks can be used for enhancing students learning. Look at WattPad !
Use Audio Feedback… BIG time saver, lots of advantages ONCE you have had the time to invest with using it. But worth investing that effort in.
Twitter – Take it a little seriously.. Possibly the most useful tool you could take away from this session!!
Research scientists using Twitter…
