2. Why GKR accepted the invitation to join AI+?
Great opportunity:
– to establish/strenghten international professional
relations
– to acquire necessary knowledge and training in
digitization process
– to finally establish digital library
– to connect more closely to other libraries and
heritage institutions in Croatia on digitization
issues

3. Start
• Focus group: assessment of situation on Croatia
– many digitization initiatives
– central digitization point – Ministry of Culture
– not enough cooperation or central organization
– lacking basic infrastructure
• Centre of competence: training in Veria – GKR staff,
University Library in Rijeka, National and University
Library in Zagreb, Ministry of Culture

4. Online training courses
• Fully translated into Croatian language
• Presented to heritage institutions community (archives,
libraries, museums) on national and local level
• Cooperation with:
– Carnet (Croatian academic and research network) –
Moodle hosting
– National and University Library in Zagreb – Center for
continuing professional education of librarians –
certificates
– University in Rijeka, Faculty of Philosophy – courses as a
part of curriculum (optional course)
• Courses launched January 2013, so far: 151 registered, 81
completed

5. Pilot digital library
•Material selection – local history
and heritage; not many objects
so far - 300
•Copyright issues – extensive
and time consuming work
•Digital archive software
selection – open source Omeka
•Omeka translation and
programming
•Material scanning
•Metadata
•Digital library launched in June
2013
