An Overview of SAE Institute
SAE INSTITUTE was founded in 1976 by Dr. Tom Misner.
Since then it has grown to be the largest private college of its kind and
comprises over 50 campuses across the globe. It is referred to, globally, as SAE.
Statement of Educational Philosophy and Mission
SAE believes that it is of paramount importance to provide an effective
network of learning opportunities for students in preparation for their careers.

	 The unique EMP provides an opportunity for music enthusiasts to unleash their passion for sound on the best music equipment on the planet,
training with industry experts. The program encourages individualism and combines the fundamentals of electronic music production with
practical experimentation and personal creativity. Students will graduate from the nine-month program with the skills and knowledge to create
the music they love and gain a strong foundation for future learning.
	 EMP focuses on Sound Theory, Computer Fundamentals, Project Studio Recording and MIDI. Software training includes Pro Tools, Logic, Reason,
Rewire, Cubase, Ableton Live and specialised DJ Software. Subjects include DJ’ing, Beat Programming, Filters, EQ, Consoles, Dynamic Processors,
Effects, Patch Bays, Digital Theory, Remixing, Microphones, Music Theory, Advanced MIDI, Sampling, Synthesis and Mastering.
Successful Graduates are awarded a Certificate In Electronic Music Production.

	 with no prior experience or personal equipment required.

PRODUCTION Crossfading, Backspinning, Scatching, Looping Remixing and much more. Mastering techniques for various media such as CD, vinyl and internet
are explored.
	 Main SUBJECTS: 		 DJ World and Techniques, Music Theory Fundamentals, Analytical Listening, Arrangement and Remixing, Fundamental Mastering.
	AUDIO 		 Every working sound engineer must be fluent in the practice of system interconnection. This includes studio system signal flow and is introduced
ENGINEERING with an emphasis on the importance of achieving the correct signal gain structure in the recording studio and mix down process.

	 Audio EQUIPMENT	 Regular maintenance ensures that equipment performs at its optimum. We investigate maintenance activities for professional audio equipment.
	 Main subjects: 		 Operating Levels, Electronic Alignment, System Interconnection.
	 Digital Audio 	 Increasingly available digital audio technology has revolutionized sound assembly. We systematically introduce hardware and software used in the virtual
EDITING studio environment. Practical assignments are tailored towards developing editing and assembly skills.
	 Main subjects: 		 File Formats, Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic Pro, System Requirements, System Operational Techniques, Software Plug in Modules, Digital Signal Processing.
	 Audio Post 		 Many audio engineers work with sound for motion picture and video production. The assembly techniques and technology is explained and supported with
PRODUCTION	 practical post production projects.
	 Main subjects: 		 Film Sound, Location Sound, Film/Video Signal Flow, Synchronization, On Line/Off Line Editing.

designs are also discussed.
	 Main subjects: 		 Acoustic Fundamentals, Psychoacoustics, Modal Analysis, Reverb Time Analysis, Absorption, Diffusion, Control Room Design, Studio Live Room Design.
	 Advanced 	 Focuses on the new production techniques, commercial music arrangement basics, mixing for advertising, preparation of a 2 track master, studio etiquette

Is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). The Bachelor Of Recording Arts incorporates the development
of creative skills and research methods necessary in today’s highly competitive digital media and infotainment industry.
This gives perspective employers confidence that our graduates will get the job done.
This stage furthers the development of music production skills relevant to the commercial and classical music worlds. It develops
the understanding of relevant aspects of business management and legal matters as well as communication and research skills.
This Degree is a research based degree opening the way to the highest levels of academic education (Masters and PhD).

THE BACHELOR OF RECORDING ARTS - Level Two Studies Summary
Level Two contains two Modules RA 203: Industry Perspectives, Issues and Research Techniques, and 204: Cultural Perspectives, that
incline more to the development of ideas, academic facility and integrity, and professional perspectives.
Module 203: Industry Perspectives, Issues, and Research Techniques, is an academically rigorous module requiring students to examine
critically the structural antecedents of the contemporary industry, the range of problems and operational issues confronting industry
leaders, and to relate these to the general concerns and issues facing the creative industries.
Through analysis and discussion students are encouraged to speculate on possible future directions of the creative industries – both nationally and
internationally. The module is also designed to further develop information gathering skills and investigative attitudes, critical analysis abilities
and reliable reporting techniques aimed at equipping students to make convincing project proposals and to be effective self-critics.
Module 204: Cultural Perspectives is aimed at providing aesthetic foundations and creative perspectives to contemporary creative efforts by
examining a range of current industry activities.
THE BACHELOR OF RECORDING ARTS - Level Three Studies Summary
The third and final level of this programme is distinguished by its emphasis on advanced technological skills, mature and insightful creative
activities, academic excellence, and by a thoughtful mix of class activities and guided self-directed learning. To accommodate these important
characteristics, the number of assessment items has been reduced, relative to earlier Levels. Consequently, the expectation is that each item will
demonstrate, at a high level, a balanced and well-integrated synergy between cognitive abilities and practical skills, between the theoretical
frameworks and the practical applications.
The main feature of Level Three is the Research Project (Module 303) through which students are able to demonstrate the extent and cohesiveness of their
technological skills and academic abilities, and to provide a clear indication of their readiness to move into the professional work setting or further academic
study. It provides the opportunity for each student to develop their own creativity and research in an area of particular professional or academic interest to
them. The Research Project should be the focal point of activities and should draw from and feed into the requirements of the other Level Three Modules.
The other Modules can reinforce and provide support for the Research Project by providing opportunities for advanced technological studies, of hardware and
software, which are important to the proper execution of the project.
The organisation and delivery of these ‘high end’ technological studies will be negotiated between students and the Program Coordinator to ensure the best
possible synergy. Studies in the vital support areas such as Marketing and Intellectual Property can be directly applicable to the nature and potential of the
Research Project. Students are encouraged to take full advantage of this opportunity to legally ‘protect’ their project via the relevant copyright processes and
to explore its business and commercial options. In that general context they are also encouraged to examine possible commercial opportunities in the very broad
field of edutainment - a sub-set inside the even larger field of infotainment.

RAB203 ACADEMIC RESEARCH & WRITING TECHNIQUES
The primary focus of this module is to provide academic bridging skills for students wishing to enrol in the final two years of the Bachelor Of Recording Arts
and who do not have the necessary pre-requisites (minimum of NCEA Level 3 qualification). The module is designed to prepare for entry into a programme
that will require a high standard of academic knowledge, skills and achievement in areas of reading, research, writing, oral discussion and presentation.

RA203 INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVES, ISSUES & RESEARCH TECHNIQUES
This module surveys the structure and operation of the infotainment, edutainment and entertainment industries, the issues currently facing the industry and
considers the policies and attitudes of the industry as they relate to the world market. Emphasis is places on developments in technology and changes in
social structures.
Research and Information Sources:
The ability to plan and implement independent research is of fundamental importance to persons preparing for careers in the infotainment industry.
This module establishes methodologies, skills and attitudes so the student can successfully complete research in this field.
RA204 CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES
A key element in effective membership of the infotainment industry is the ability to identify, analyse and contribute intelligently to issues currently
influencing the industry and the wider community. This module explores contemporary issues in ways that encourage students to take an active part in
professional dialogue.
Contemporary Issues:
This component of the program is also aimed at providing aesthetic foundations and creative perspectives regarding design, story-telling, cultural ideas and
techniques of expression.
Roles of Producers and Directors:
This Module explores the various and changing roles of Producers, Directors, Conductors, and Artistic Managers and examines the work and practice of a
selection of successful ‘artists’ who have made major contributions as producers in their specialised fields.

RA301 BUSINESS & LEGAL STUDIES
Managing a small business requires a range of skills and attitudes in a number of areas. Of major importance are areas such as administration, finance,
personnel, networking and forward planning. This module aims to provide students with a range of management skills relevant to working in the industry.
Marketing, Promotion and Publicity:
A key element in any successful enterprise is the ability to promote, publicise and market the product or services provided. This module will provide students
with a range of ideas and attitudes that will help them to develop successful projects by making them more effective in the fields of publicity and promotion.
Copyright and Legal Issues:
Students are able to understand their legal responsibilities associated with publishing creative work and make appropriate decisions to protect their rights and
business efforts.
Music Producers and Industry Personnel:
Identify and discuss the key skills and characteristics of personnel in the infotainment industry with particular emphasis on record producers and music
industry professionals and understand the workings of the music business.
RA303 RESEARCH PROJECT
This module is the culmination of the degree program and is designed to demonstrate a student’s ability to initiate, implement and evaluate a substantial
creative/technical project under SAE staff supervision. Students are expected to demonstrate advanced abilities in a chosen area of specialisation.
A range of special degree-related practical projects using our extensive facilities, accompanies this Degree.
RA302 TECHNOLOGY & EDUCATION
It is likely that graduates will engage in teaching others at some stage during their careers. In that context it is desirable that they have a basic
understanding of the principles of teaching and learning, and of the processes of curriculum development and delivery.
Industry Perspectives and Issues:
Students are required to think critically about the origins of the contemporary industry, the range of problems and operational issues confronting industry
leaders, and to relate them to the general concerns and issues facing society today.

The Australia & New Zealand Alumni Association offers graduates information and services related to furthering
their education and establishing industry contacts.

Prospective students are welcome to see us about academic requirements for our programs. We will assist you to make an informed choice about your suitability for the program
you are interested in.
COUNSELLING AND STUDENT SUPPORT
Students may seek the assistance of their Program Coordinator for any matters regarding attendance, tuition fees, vocational advice and academic progress.
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Our Diploma and Degree programs are registered with the Ministry of Education for Domestic Student Loans and Allowance purposes. Application forms are available from
STUDYLINK New Zealand for SAE Diploma and Degree programs that are Government funded. The STUDYLINK contact centre free phone number is (0800) 88 99 00.
CAREER PLACEMENT ASSISTANCE
SAE placement service is offered exclusively to graduates of the Degree programs and efforts are made to assist ALL graduates. SAE’s national and international
network is the strongest link graduates have to future potential employers in the audio and film industries. We do our best to bring our graduates and potential employers
together.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
International students will need to obtain a Study Visa for New Zealand. SAE Institute (Auckland) can provide some assistance with the Visa process.

ACCOMMODATION
Finding accommodation can sometimes be a difficult task. We can provide you with personal assistance and recommendations regarding accommodation before your studies
with us.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
For entry requirements refer to the individual program information. SAE Institute has an equal opportunities policy and the entrance requirements for admission apply to all
applicants without regard to race, sex, age or religion.
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Credit for previous training or experience may be granted prior to commencement of a SAE program. Application for granting of credit can be made to the Program Coordinator.
Credit will be granted on a “per unit” basis. Exemption from a program unit(s) is dependent upon meeting the theoretical requirements of the unit(s) and presentation of a
portfolio which demonstrates relevant practical skills. In the event of credit being granted the program length may be shortened and fees adjusted accordingly.
HOLIDAYS
Holidays are kept to a minimum during all programs. SAE is closed on statutory public holidays and also for three weeks during the Christmas holiday period.
A list of the holiday dates is provided to the student upon commencement.

1. Choose the program you wish to undertake at SAE. Note the different starting dates and class times.
2. Fill in the Registration Form and Demographic Details. Print clearly in pen, and complete all questions (do not leave anything out).
3. Read the Registration Agreement on the reverse side of the Registration Form. Sign it.
4. Sign the Registration Form and Demographic Details.
5. Include the following copies:
• Highest education.
• IELTS-test/language proof if English is not your first language.
• Evidence of age: copy of either birth certificate, passport or photo driver’s licence.
• To qualify as a domestic student: Certified copy of one of the following:
• Birth certificate with place of birth stated NZ, Cook Islands, Tokelau or Niue.
• New Zealand passport.
• A statement of Whakapapa, including date of birth, countersigned by a kaumatua.
• Certificate of citizenship or letter of confirmation.
• Overseas passport with residency stamp.
6. Make out a cheque for the registration fee, payable to “SAE”
7. Send or drop all documents to SAE INSTITUTE.
8. You will receive an “Offer of Place” letter and “Enrolment” letter.
9. Sign the “Offer of Place” letter and return the signed “Offer of Place” to SAE INSTITUTE.
=> You are now formally enrolled and will receive further correspondence from us.
You have the option of withdrawing from the program prior to the eighth calendar day from commencement of the program.

The Certificate In Electronic Music Production is intended for musicians, DJs and teachers of music in secondary and tertiary education, those who enjoy experimenting with technology as well as electronic music and audio hobbyists. The program is open to anyone 16 years and above with no prior experience or personal equipment required. SAE INSTITUTE NZ sound theory Focuses on the principles of sound, how the ear works, decibel, introduction to recording techniques and basic signal flow. Main SUBJECTS: Fundamentals of Sound, The Ear and Hearing, Frequency Analysis, Mix Analysis, The Decibel. Microphones The key to capturing a sound faithfully is understanding microphones and their operation. You are given an insight into the professional application of microphones within the studio. Mastering techniques for various media such as CD, vinyl and internet are explored. Module 203: Industry Perspectives, Issues, and Research Techniques, is an academically rigorous module requiring students to examine critically the structural antecedents of the contemporary industry, the range of problems and operational issues confronting industry leaders, and to relate these to the general concerns and issues facing the creative industries. Through analysis and discussion students are encouraged to speculate on possible future directions of the creative industries – both nationally and internationally. The module is also designed to further develop information gathering skills and investigative attitudes, critical analysis abilities and reliable reporting techniques aimed at equipping students to make convincing project proposals and to be effective self-critics. Module 204: Cultural Perspectives is aimed at providing aesthetic foundations and creative perspectives to contemporary creative efforts by examining a range of current industry activities. THE BACHELOR OF RECORDING ARTS - Level Three Studies Summary The third and final level of this programme is distinguished by its emphasis on advanced technological skills, mature and insightful creative activities, academic excellence, and by a thoughtful mix of class activities and guided self-directed learning. To accommodate these important characteristics, the number of assessment items has been reduced, relative to earlier Levels. Consequently, the expectation is that each item will demonstrate, at a high level, a balanced and well-integrated synergy between cognitive abilities and practical skills, between the theoretical frameworks and the practical applications. The main feature of Level Three is the Research Project (Module 303) through which students are able to demonstrate the extent and cohesiveness of their technological skills and academic abilities, and to provide a clear indication of their readiness to move into the professional work setting or further academic study. It provides the opportunity for each student to develop their own creativity and research in an area of particular professional or academic interest to them. The Research Project should be the focal point of activities and should draw from and feed into the requirements of the other Level Three Modules. The other Modules can reinforce and provide support for the Research Project by providing opportunities for advanced technological studies, of hardware and software, which are important to the proper execution of the project. The organisation and delivery of these ‘high end’ technological studies will be negotiated between students and the Program Coordinator to ensure the best possible synergy. Studies in the vital support areas such as Marketing and Intellectual Property can be directly applicable to the nature and potential of the Research Project. Students are encouraged to take full advantage of this opportunity to legally ‘protect’ their project via the relevant copyright processes and to explore its business and commercial options. In that general context they are also encouraged to examine possible commercial opportunities in the very broad field of edutainment - a sub-set inside the even larger field of infotainment.

Page 14 -Bachelor of Recording Arts Degree Modules- SAE INSTITUTE NZ RAB203 ACADEMIC RESEARCH & WRITING TECHNIQUES The primary focus of this module is to provide academic bridging skills for students wishing to enrol in the final two years of the Bachelor Of Recording Arts and who do not have the necessary pre-requisites (minimum of NCEA Level 3 qualification). The module is designed to prepare for entry into a programme that will require a high standard of academic knowledge, skills and achievement in areas of reading, research, writing, oral discussion and presentation. Emphasis is places on developments in technology and changes in social structures. Research and Information Sources: The ability to plan and implement independent research is of fundamental importance to persons preparing for careers in the infotainment industry. This module establishes methodologies, skills and attitudes so the student can successfully complete research in this field. RA204 CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES A key element in effective membership of the infotainment industry is the ability to identify, analyse and contribute intelligently to issues currently influencing the industry and the wider community. This module explores contemporary issues in ways that encourage students to take an active part in professional dialogue. Contemporary Issues: This component of the program is also aimed at providing aesthetic foundations and creative perspectives regarding design, story-telling, cultural ideas and techniques of expression. Roles of Producers and Directors: This Module explores the various and changing roles of Producers, Directors, Conductors, and Artistic Managers and examines the work and practice of a selection of successful ‘artists’ who have made major contributions as producers in their specialised fields.

Of major importance are areas such as administration, finance, personnel, networking and forward planning. This module aims to provide students with a range of management skills relevant to working in the industry. Marketing, Promotion and Publicity: A key element in any successful enterprise is the ability to promote, publicise and market the product or services provided. This module will provide students with a range of ideas and attitudes that will help them to develop successful projects by making them more effective in the fields of publicity and promotion. Copyright and Legal Issues: Students are able to understand their legal responsibilities associated with publishing creative work and make appropriate decisions to protect their rights and business efforts. Music Producers and Industry Personnel: Identify and discuss the key skills and characteristics of personnel in the infotainment industry with particular emphasis on record producers and music industry professionals and understand the workings of the music business. RA303 RESEARCH PROJECT This module is the culmination of the degree program and is designed to demonstrate a student’s ability to initiate, implement and evaluate a substantial creative/technical project under SAE staff supervision. Students are expected to demonstrate advanced abilities in a chosen area of specialisation. A range of special degree-related practical projects using our extensive facilities, accompanies this Degree. RA302 TECHNOLOGY & EDUCATION It is likely that graduates will engage in teaching others at some stage during their careers. In that context it is desirable that they have a basic understanding of the principles of teaching and learning, and of the processes of curriculum development and delivery. Industry Perspectives and Issues: Students are required to think critically about the origins of the contemporary industry, the range of problems and operational issues confronting industry leaders, and to relate them to the general concerns and issues facing society today.

COUNSELLING AND STUDENT SUPPORT Students may seek the assistance of their Program Coordinator for any matters regarding attendance, tuition fees, vocational advice and academic progress. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Our Diploma and Degree programs are registered with the Ministry of Education for Domestic Student Loans and Allowance purposes. CAREER PLACEMENT ASSISTANCE SAE placement service is offered exclusively to graduates of the Degree programs and efforts are made to assist ALL graduates. We do our best to bring our graduates and potential employers together. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS International students will need to obtain a Study Visa for New Zealand. SAE Institute (Auckland) can provide some assistance with the Visa process. ACCOMMODATION Finding accommodation can sometimes be a difficult task. We can provide you with personal assistance and recommendations regarding accommodation before your studies with us. ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS For entry requirements refer to the individual program information. SAE Institute has an equal opportunities policy and the entrance requirements for admission apply to all applicants without regard to race, sex, age or religion. RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING Credit for previous training or experience may be granted prior to commencement of a SAE program. Application for granting of credit can be made to the Program Coordinator. Credit will be granted on a “per unit” basis. Exemption from a program unit(s) is dependent upon meeting the theoretical requirements of the unit(s) and presentation of a portfolio which demonstrates relevant practical skills. In the event of credit being granted the program length may be shortened and fees adjusted accordingly. HOLIDAYS Holidays are kept to a minimum during all programs. SAE is closed on statutory public holidays and also for three weeks during the Christmas holiday period. A list of the holiday dates is provided to the student upon commencement. Fill in the Registration Form and Demographic Details. Print clearly in pen, and complete all questions (do not leave anything out). 3. Read the Registration Agreement on the reverse side of the Registration Form. Sign it. 4. Sign the Registration Form and Demographic Details. 5. Include the following copies: • Highest education. • IELTS-test/language proof if English is not your first language. • Evidence of age: copy of either birth certificate, passport or photo driver’s licence. • To qualify as a domestic student: Certified copy of one of the following: • Birth certificate with place of birth stated NZ, Cook Islands, Tokelau or Niue. • New Zealand passport. • A statement of Whakapapa, including date of birth, countersigned by a kaumatua. • Certificate of citizenship or letter of confirmation. • Overseas passport with residency stamp. 6. Make out a cheque for the registration fee, payable to “SAE” 7. Send or drop all documents to SAE INSTITUTE. 8. You will receive an “Offer of Place” letter and “Enrolment” letter. 9. Sign the “Offer of Place” letter and return the signed “Offer of Place” to SAE INSTITUTE. => You are now formally enrolled and will receive further correspondence from us. You have the option of withdrawing from the program prior to the eighth calendar day from commencement of the program.
