Annotated Bibliography Speech Over the Titanic
Introduction
A. Attention Getter- The Titanic is arguable one of the most famous
tragedies of the sea.
B. Reason to listen/ Establishing Credibility/- By researching many sources
about the Titanic I feel that I am a viable source to talk about the Titanic.
C. Introduction to Topic/Central Idea/ Thesis Statement- By learning from
these past mistakes, we can positively improve our future.
(shorten) Preview of Main Points- Technology has improved giving us more
information about what happened that night way back in 1912
1,Body
I. Main Point #1- What Happened (1912)
II. Subpoint #1- Information about the Ship
Supporting Evidence- According to history.com the Titanic which weighed
over 46,000 pounds and was about 812 feet or 3 football fields. It had nine decks and
stood in height at 175 feet. On board they believed that there was 2200 passengers and
crew, and only carried enough lifeboats for 1,178 of them which was more than the legal
law stated to have. To purchase a ticket aboard this vessel for 1st class ticket you
needed $4,300 per ticket and 3rd class was $36 for another ticket. (History, 2009)
Supporting Evidence- According to the New York Times Article of 1912, on
the 15 of April 635 passengers were found in lifeboats by the Carpathia at 8:20 in the
morning. The passengers reported on being there most of the night. When the Carpathia
arrived at the location the Titanic sank all they found was floating wood in the water.
(Times, 1912)
Supporting Evidence- Also in the New York Times Article they wrote that
the white star line believed that the rest of the passengers and crew were aboard other
neighboring ships that had not come into port yet. After 3 days it was confirmed that they
were not aboard any of the neighboring ship. Then the same day the White Star Line
stated that they felt at no time were there passengers unsafe and showed no remorse.
Supporting Evidence- John Thayer gave a verydetailed description to eye
witness history.com of what it was like to see the Titanic go down. “We could see groups
of the almost fifteen hundred people still aboard, clinging in clusters or bunches, like
swarming bees;only to fall in masses, pairs or singly, as the great after part of the ship,
two hundred and fifty feet of it, rose into the sky, till it reached a sixty-five or seventy
degree angle." The great ship slowly slid beneath the waters two hours and forty minutes
after the collision and all was lost” (Thesinkingofthetitanic, 2000)
Subpoint #2- How is this information being used today
Supporting Evidence- The Titanic actually carried around 2,200
passengers
Supporting Evidence- So if you post something mean about your best
friend when your in a fight, that post could be used to consider your
responsibility in a business setting.
Transition Sentence- As technology has advanced it has given us the opportunity
to give us a better idea of what really happen aboard the Titanic that night.
II. Main Point #2 What We Think Happened to the Titanic (2014)
A. Subpoint #1- A Fresh Look at the Evidence by a Former Chief Inspector of
Marine Accidents
Abbey Ellis
Supporting Evidence- According to the Book The Titanic: A Fresh
look at the Evidence By a Former Chief Inspector, a Fresh water iceberg from
contained rock that mixed with ice over 5,000 years from the west coast of
Greenland that they believe the titanic hit.
Supporting Evidence- When it did hit the Titanic it loosened the
bolts in the ship that was holding the medal panels together. It gave enough
space between the plates to allow tons of water to flow through into the ship.
Also another factor was that these bolts were not like the rest of the ships bolts.
3/4 of the ship was enforced with steel bolts from a machine, while the north side
was enforced by hand with weaker metal.
Supporting Evidence- According to The Sinking of the Unsinkable Titanic, a
scholar journal, Fu-Lau Tony believes that the mindset at the time was a factor to
why the Titanic sank. The world at this time was doing things they never thought
they could do with sky scrapers, and ships going increasing fast. The captain and
crew believed that they were indestructible when the opposite is the fact.
Anything can break. (Yu,F.T., 2012)
Conclusion
A. Summarize Main Points- Although the Titanic is one of the most well
known tragedies of the sea the reason why it occurred has not always been clear.
As information has changed from 1912 to today we have a lot more information
because of advancements in technology.
B. Reemphasize Central Idea- Employers are reaching into cyberspace to
see who we truly are as applicants. We have the opportunity to change what
version they see of ourselves by the version we let them see.
C. Motivate Audience to Respond- Be conscious of what you post and what
is posted on your social media. You are in control of your presence.
D. Close with Impact- The decisions you made today, are the decisions you
live with tomorrow. If you closely monitor your social media and understand your
presence today, there is nothing stopping you from living your dream tomorrow.
