Thisfarm designplanfocusesonthe productionof chevronandspecialty porkproductsinthe southern
half of NewJersey.Usinghighlymanagedgrazingsystemsandwoodlotintegrationwe gainanadded
bonusof loweredfeedingexpensesandhighenvironmental sustainability.Inaddition,highlyspecialized
marketingwill allowthe producertogaina premiumfortheirrare meatsproduction. Additionalincome
can be made frommiscellaneoussalesandagro-tourism.
Breedselectionand Reproductive programs
Chevron
1. Spanish
The Spanishgoat has beenselectedforseveralreasons. One of the primaryreasonsare theirrelatively
highresistance toparasites.A highlevel of returnonlow inputdietsanddocile nature alsoallow this
breedtoexcel inour managementsystem.Thisbreedisdual purpose makingita suitable optionforour
reproductive F1generationsaswell asterminal outcross.
2. Boer
2. The Boer is a SouthAfricanimportdevelopedbythe Dutch.Itis knownasthe goldstandardof meat
production.Withit'sextensive musclingandhighhangingweightitservesasthe primaryoutcross of
the breedingsystem.
3. Nubian
The nubianisthe onlymilkbreedinthe systemandisthe foundationforthe crosswithall f1 crosses
possessingnubianheritage.These animalsare knowntohave excellentmotheringabilitywithhigh
butterfatcontentmakingthemperfectmothersforhardgainingboercrosses.
Reproductive program
The reproductive programselectedforthisplanprovidesthe bestheterosiswiththe leastamountof
expertiserequiredbythe operator.Thissystemisthe three breedterminal cross.The firststepisto
selectanubiandoe and Spanishbuck.ThisyieldsanF1 generationconsistingof Spanish/Nubiancrosses
whichshouldinherithighresistance andsuperiormotheringability.The F1generation femaleswill be
breedagainsta Boerbuck. The resultingF2generationwillbe yourmarketgoats.Inadditiontothe
entire F2 populationmostof the F1 generationwill be goodforsale.Onlythe bestF1sshouldremainas
replacementsandnewanimalsof true breedingnature shouldbe addedregularlytothe breedingherd.
3. Breedingswilltake place annuallystartinginSeptemberendinginNovember.Kiddingwouldbe
expected fromFebruarytill April.
Pork breedselectionand reproductive management
GuineaHog
Standingabout2 foothighand 4 footlong the Guineahogdiminutivestature andamicable personality
makesthisbreedanideal addin forwoodedareaclearing.
Pigswill be breedlive coverandat three monthsgestationpregnantsowswill be broughtindoorsto
concrete holdingpens. Atthe pointof weaningall pigswill returntowoodedarea.

with40 goats the requiredacreage youwill needis16 acres to maintaincarryingcapacity.The rotation
schedule Ihave developedrequires3 separatedareasof the same size sothe suggestedacreage forthis
systemis48 acres.Each sectionwill have one of the three setups.
1. the active state inwhichthe area issubdividedintofoursmallerareasone forthe bucks,one
for the does,andtwo at wait.Thissetupwill allow the animalstograze one whole
year.The animalswill be movedfromquartertoquartereach seasonandplaced
inthe nextsectionatthe endof the year.
2. the restingfieldwhichwillbe sownwitha mixture of Orchard
grass and white cloverormeadowbrome grassandalfalfaat a 75:25 ratio to
insure nitrogenavailability.The mixtureshouldbe alternatedateveryreplantto
ensure pestanddisease cyclesare broken.Haywill be harvestedinthese
fieldswhile animalsaren'tpresent.
3. Grain sectionwill be subdividedthree wayshavingdifferentgraincropsin
rotation.One will be winterwheatfalltospringandbuckwheatfromspringto
fall,the secondwill be winterrye fromfall tospringand corn fromspringto fall,
and the thirdwill be speltfromfall tospringandoats fromspringto fall.This
rotationshouldalsomove withinthe areaannuallyastoneverbe plantedinthe
same locationmultipletimes.
The procedure forrotationis as followsthe animalsshouldmovefromactive toresting.Afterthe
animalshave leftthe fielditcanbe diskedandthe grainfieldscanbe sown.The manure fromthe
animalsshouldbe well pastthe mandatedrestperiodandserve asanatural fertilizer.
5. Additional,bandingwill be the preferredmethodof castration.Occasional hoof trimmingmaybe
necessary.Essentialfamachascoringwill dictate dewormingschedules.The vaccinationprotocolwill
include clostridiumC&D and Tetanus30 dayspriorto kidding.5 weeksof age forkidsand a booster4
weekslater.30 daysprior to breeding.
WoodlotPork
The Woodlotsand orchardsare the secondformof managementsystemintendedforthe guineahogs.
Initiallythe woodedareaswillbe natural butas the landis clearedWe will addSouthernRedOaksor
Apple trees.20Pigswill need4acres of woodland.However,I'maimingtohave 10 acres for production.
Pigswill Farrowindoorsbe movedtowoodlotsatweaningthemtobe finishedinaconfinementarea
outdoors.The dietof these pigswill be acombinationof foodwaste,brewersgrains,harvested,and
supplementedgrains. Farrowingprocedure aimsforlowestmortality.Farrowingcrushcageswill provide
comfortand ease of access.Cuttingof needle teeth,Ironshots, castrations,andvaccinationswillall
occur in thistime frame.Atthe time of weaningcastratedmalesandgiltswill be releasedtowooded
areas.Breedingboarswill be keptinholdingareas.Finishingwill occurina fencedareaof the woodlot.
