An apple a day used to keep the doctor away. But today, many Americans need much more than a daily serving of fruit to earn a clean bill of
health. Physical activity is a key component of overall well-being and can be increased through low or no cost lifestyle changes, such as joining
a health club. Your health club has the potential to be a critical resource for getting deconditioned, sick, and inactive individuals healthy.
The key to becoming a resource is developing successful relationships with the doctors in your area, so that they confidently refer patients to
your club or fitness professionals. Doctors have significant power to influence the behavior of their patients; when they say, “exercise,” patients
get moving. This toolkit will provide you with the knowledge, insights and resources you can use to develop positive relationships with
physicians in your community, and medical wellness programs that will get a doctor’s stamp of approval.
In the beginning sections, you will learn how to open the conversation and establish a line of communication between you and a local
physician. You will learn what doctors are looking for, and what to say when making the case that they should refer patients to your club.
Then, you will learn what makes a health club medical wellness program successful and attractive to both medical health professionals and
consumers. Tips on how to track and report client/patient results, report templates and FAQ materials are included.
Throughout the toolkit, you will learn from the experiences of several of the health and fitness industry’s medical- wellness pioneers.
As the club operators featured in this toolkit have discovered, helping people get healthy is what will reduce medical costs, drive business

and economic aspects of these problems. However, many of these numbers are either over-used or too large to understand.
For example, recent data suggests that obesity results in $152 billion in direct medical costs, or that the total estimated cost of diabetes was
$245 billion as of 2012. These are large, wowing numbers, but they don’t break down the problem – or the benefits of a solution – to the
individual patient.
These talking points were created using a variety of health care and industry data and designed to provide some evidence of how exercising
regularly at a health club or individually will ultimately benefit patients economically. However, concrete data on the health and economic
benefits of exercising in health clubs or gather from individually is currently scarce, which makes tracking and documenting your members’
progress and outcomes important.

• The average cost of non-insulin prescription diabetes
medication is $1,423 per year. If a patient eliminated his or
her need for prescription medications like Metformin
through diet and exercise, he or she would save enough
money. - IHRSA 2013 Health Club Consumer Report and the
American Diabetes Association report “Economic Costs of Diabetes In
the U.S. in 2012.”
• Depending on the drug and dose required, a lower risk
patient who needs statin drugs to lower his or her cholesterol
and reduce his or her risk of heart disease can spend $12 -
$153 on these drugs per month. The cost for higher risk
patients can be $63 - $163 per month. There are currently
health clubs that cost as little as $10 - $20 per month, and
patients who use diet and exercise with the support of a
health club or individually to reduce or eliminate their need
for statins will see their club membership pay for itself over

Figures published in a paper on the mHealth app
development industry estimate there are now 100,000 apps
dedicated to mobile health available for Android and iOS, a
ﬁgure which has doubled over the last two years. The report
shows the global health and ﬁtness mobile app market is
worth about $4 billion at the moment, but this could increase
to $26 billion by 2017. Google’s data indicates the rise has
already begun.

Health insurance companies are helping to drive this growth.
New York-based Oscar, a new health insurance company focused on using technology to communicate
with customers, announced in February that it would be giving all of its patrons Misfit fitness trackers. Users
will receive $1 each time they hit their daily goal for steps taken – up to an annual total of $240 – distributed
each month in an Amazon gift card. And consumers have been responsive.
“Twenty dollars a month? That’s awesome – that’s motivation for me,” said Heath Brockwell, an apprentice barber from New York
City, one of the first recipients of a Misfit from Oscar.
