Agenda entry: Quarterbacking the AWS Estate, Ian Meyers, AWS Solutions Architect. In this session we'll review real world ways to ensure your AWS estate is secure and that you can keep good controls over what happens, when, and how much it costs. Covered in this session will be Account Management best practices, how to enable and configure programmatic billing, as well as setup for cost allocation tagging and billing alerts. Ian will also give a quick update on new AWS Services of Data Pipeline, Redshift and new High Capacity instances. Organiser's commentary: Delighted as always to welcome a speaker from AWS. This time we had Ian, AWS Solutions Architect, to talk on security, programmatic billing, and exciting new products such as Red Shift and OpsWorks. This session was a particular coup as we had a good Q&A on OpsWorks with Ian on the very same day it was put on general release.

This talk describes Klaviyo’s internal messaging system, an asynchronous application framework built around Pulsar that provides a set of high-quality tools for building business-critical asynchronous data flows in unreliable environments. This framework includes: a pulsar ORM and schema migrator for topic configuration; a retry/replay system; a versioned schema registry; a consumer framework oriented around preventing message loss and in hostile environments while maximizing observability; an experimental “online schema change” for topics; and more. Development of this system was informed by lessons learned during heavy use of datastores like RabbitMQ and Kafka, and frameworks like Celery, Spark, and Flink. In addition to the capabilities of this system, this talk will also cover (sometimes painful) lessons learned about the process of converting a heterogenous async-computing environment onto Pulsar and a unified model.

There are now new options for developers looking to benefit from this approach with the release of AWS Lambda controls for asynchronous and stream processing events, Lambda event destinations, and Amazon EventBridge, a serverless event bus service. In this tech talk, we'll demonstrate strategies for managing events to help you build more resilient event-driven applications. You will learn how to customize responses to Lambda function results with new service features to handle retries, failures, and prevent “poison pill” events. We will also demonstrate how to configure Lambda event destinations to route execution results to other AWS services, and how to set up routing rules in Amazon EventBridge that react to all of your data sources.
