Social mobility means a person
occupying a special position in society
will move to another position or status.
MEANING

DEFINITIONS
1. SOROKIN :- “There is no society which is
closed (caste system of
India) and which is
completely open (class system).
No two societies are exactly same in the
amount of movement allowed or
discouraged. The speed of
movement is different from one
period of time to
another. The speed depends on the
modernization of the society”.
2. BARBER :- “Social mobility refers to movement
either upward or
downward between higher or
lower social classes”.

TYPES OF SOCIAL MOBILITY
 It is of 5 types :-
1. Horizontal Mobility
2. Vertical Mobility
a. Upward mobility
b. Downward mobility
3. Inter – generational Mobility
4. Intra – generational Mobility
5. Occupational Mobility

1. HORIZONTAL MOBILITY
This is
when a
person
changes
his
occupatio
n but
overall
social
status
remains
the same.

2. VERTICAL MOBILITY
Here with the change in occupation the change in social
status ocurs.
a. Upward mobility b. Downward mobility
 A person when moves
from lower social
position to higher one.
 When a person goes
on upward mobility he
leaves many things
behind.
 He tries to adopt
appropriating
behaviours according
to his status.
 A person when moves
from higher social
position to lower one.
 It is very stressful.
 People find tough to
adopt the sudden
declination in their
social position.

CONCLUSION
 Mobility is found in a temporal sense i.e in a
period of time.
 It cann’t be thought in the absence of time.
 All the previously mentioned types are
comprehensive and don’t include any other
mobility types.
