23. History of MP at Ministry of Health
In the mid 80’s a radiation protection section
was established under hospital administration
Department. It was mainly concerned with
managing film badge system for the radiation
workers in MOH hospitals.
In mid 90’s this section was transferred under
the Department of professional and preventive
health. This section has expanded the services
it provides to include QA tests for general X-
ray machines. The fast expansions in
Radiological services in MOH hospitals made it
difficult for this section to extend its services to
all diagnostic radiological modalities.
8th Saudi Medical Physics Conference - Oct 2015
24. There was no dedicated titles or job descriptions
under the Medical Physics name on the General
Medical scale of MOH. Different titles were used
to hire Medical Physicists (X-ray specialists, NM
specialists, ..etc.)
In 2006 Medical Physicists Jobs were created under
the proper name and the proper Job description.
Now there are about 120 Medical Physicists
positions at different sites in MOH occupied
mainly by B.Sc. Graduates (some PhD and MSc
holders). (Dr. Ali Almusned)
Recently, (~2013) a Medical Physics Department
was established under the general Directorate of
Radiology.

26. KFUPM - MP program History
Dr khamis Al Nahdi, Dr Al-Jarallah and Dr Mousa zaywas (faculty at
KFUPM physics department) played an important role to convince
the physics department to start the medical physics program.
The initial preparation including hiring teaching staff (Dr. Nabil
Moaaleg and Dr Anan Alkarmi)
In 2001 KFUPM team visited several hospitals to consult expert
Medical Physicists about the program. The program was finally
approved and started in Sep. 2002.
1. The program started with 2 students.
2. Graduating the first batch of students in January 2005.
3. First review and amendment in 2007.
4. Collaboration agreement with King Fahad specialist hospital 2011.

•“you should have a medical physics society in order to enjoy support from
the IOMP” Professor Azam Niroomand-Rad – IOMP presedent (2002)
•Since late 1990’s, a group of Medical Physicists started to search for an
umbrella to host our intended society.
(Dr. Khamis Al Nahdi 1999-2003, Dr. Ahmad Outif 2003-2006)
•Unfortunately, that time scientific (professional) societies were allowed to
be established only under academic bodies (universities).
•Accept non CQMP to create and chair the proposed society.
•Approached KSU, KAAU and KFUPM. We almost succeeded to have
SMPS established under KFUPM but for administrative reasons it was
rejected.
•In 2005, SCFHS started to host clinical professional societies (a mission in a
new direction).
